The eastern quoll is a small carnivorous marsupial that was once common across southeastern mainland Australia but was driven to near-extinction by introduced red foxes and feral cats, with the last mainland specimen collected in 1963; however, the species persisted in Tasmania where foxes did not establish, and conservation efforts have successfully reintroduced quolls to predator-free sanctuaries on the mainland, with the first mainland breeding recorded in 2018.
