I Spent £15,000 Restoring My NEGLECTED Audi RS4!追加:
A few weeks ago, I got a message on Instagram offering me a B7 RS4 for only £7,000. But there was a catch. For starters, the Super Saloon was a higher mileage category S writeoff that had a lot of recent owners. Even more concerning was the car's location.
Because if you live in the UK, you know never, and I mean never, to buy a car from either Birmingham or Bradford. But because I'm a sucker for a stray, Taylor and I headed north with a positive attitude. On arrival, however, all was not well. The RS4 was in worse shape than expected with brakes that were dangerously worn, headliner that needed replacing, and an interior that stank of cigarette smoke. One of the rear tires was also on 4 PSI. The oil clearly hadn't been changed in years, and there was absolutely no fuel in the tank. And to add insult to injury, the engine was already redot, despite me asking multiple times that the car remains cold so we could listen out for chain rattle on arrival. With all of these red flags, any sane buyer would have walked away.
So, after negotiating £200 off, a deal was done. But the fun didn't stop there, because right after filling the car with fuel, the RS4 refused to start with a battery that was so nailed, we had to jump start it in a petrol station. Now, back at the unit, work had begun getting the abused Super Saloon back up to scratch. To start, the car was cleaned inside and out. New tires and brakes were fitted because look at the state of the old ones. The engine was given fresh fluid. Original RS4 seats were fitted and a carbon intake was installed to give the performance V8 a proper motorsport bark.
And as you can see, I absolutely love this thing. It looks fantastic, sounds incredible, makes every journey and event, and has bucket loads of power.
But just how much power, I was curious to see. Which is why the following week I headed to Audi tuning specialists MRC and Banbury to get my ropey old RS4 on the dyno.
All right, so I have driven my Bradford spec RS4 an hour up the road to Banbury and we're at MRC. This is Doug, owner and founder of MRC. And as you can see, we have got my fairly high mileage RS4 on the dyno and you are going to send it. Now, this is not the first time that you've seen this car, is it?
>> No, we've seen it 10 years agoish.
>> Okay. When this car was actually looked after.
>> It was looked after, but then it's got some dubious history even.
>> Very dubious. So, yeah. Let's see what it's doing now.
>> Exactly. Right. So, this does have, according to the paperwork, an MRC tune on it already. Carbon clean. We have no idea. Not Not >> carbon cleaned.
>> Oh. At the time, 10 years ago, >> 2013, 2014.
>> Oh, okay. Okay. So, 12 13 years ago. But yeah, the previous owners of the RS4 told me that it had been done about a year ago, but uh we think that's probably porkies, don't we?
>> Yeah.
>> My bum dino says that it's got a minimum of 400 horsepower. So, let's put £5 on it.
Yeah.
I'm in trouble, aren't I? All right. But, um, yeah, do what you need to do. Then we'll find out the, uh, the health of this Bor RS4.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> Okay.
Yeah, that's so cool.
47.
It's just done 407 horsepower.
That's my bum dyno does not lie.
409.48. We're going to round that up to 410 horsepower. Even Doug's got to be impressed with that.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, that's good.
>> Yay. That's amazing.
>> It's doing this power because it was with you about 12 years ago.
>> It's still tuned.
>> It's still tuned.
>> It's still tuned. It flows. The air flow on this is different to most cars because you got that intake element. So, that screws it up a little bit.
>> Is that helping or hindering?
>> Uh, it can help for peak air flow. It can hinder because it sucks in warm air.
On the dyno, I think it's okay, but if you sat in traffic and then go to pull away, the car might feel flat. 49 PS is really good for a car that's not >> not been carbon cleaned. So, I think it probably has been carbon cleaned recently >> at some point. Yeah. Or even if it's carbon cleaned a year ago, it's been driven hard enough that it's not built up.
>> Yeah. In around Bradford.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Breaking every speed limit and go through every speed camera.
>> You have to drive fast to get away from the petal stations when you get your free fuel, don't >> that is that's true. Yeah.
>> What is there to do with this car then?
Because we know the engine is healthy.
Is there more power to be gained out of it? There's flat shifting. There's launch control. There's lots of stuff that you guys can do here, isn't there?
>> So, you can have the over on crackle.
So, just when you're in sport mode and with the ESP fully off, it'll pop and crackle and overrun or lift off. And then you could do the launch control and flat shift, which is a gimmick on a normally aspected car, but some people like to >> Yeah. Yeah.
>> flame and pop and bang and things like that. So, >> I think it'd be rude not to.
>> Yeah. Um, you could do map switching on it as well. So, if you wanted to run different fuel, then you could put a ball of octane booster in it and >> run it on an octane booster map, see if it makes more power again.
>> Yeah. Or you could have a map where it you can have it tuned for 95 on. So if you're going abroad and you know you're not going to get good fuel, you can put that in and still thrash it and enjoy it.
>> Fantastic. Well, hopefully not too much carbon to be cleaned out of it then. And then uh chuck some maps on it.
>> Y >> and then I'll pop and bang all the way home.
>> Yeah.
>> You don't really like that, do you?
>> No.
>> But for now, Bradford RS4 is doing me proud.
>> Into the workshop.
>> Yep.
>> Perfect.
All right. So, Doug, uh, you guys have done a full inspection on the RS4. And when I say full inspection, sorry, do you mind if I just hold that? There are pages and pages and pages of, uh, kind of tick boxes that you guys have gone through >> to effectively tell me the, you know, visual health of the car. Also underneath as well, what needs to be changed. Now, I have done a big order, Febby order. So, I've got new arms at the front. I've got new suspension coming. So, you're going to tell me that it's all a bit knackered, but yeah, rest assured it will be changed. But the first thing that I changed was actually uh this expansion tank cuz they do crack, don't they?
>> Just about every single one is cracked.
So, doing that. Yeah, the right thing.
You are missing the cover from there. I think the other notes were used uh sorry, some aftermarket coil packs. Is it >> probably >> I don't trust aftermarket coil packs.
You see far too many copies coming through these days.
>> Of course. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But nothing too concerning in the engine bay.
>> Concerning.
>> Nothing concerning there.
>> Okay. Nice.
>> So, these have started to to split here.
>> I don't think they're actually leaking out, but they won't be far off.
>> Yeah. They just look like quite manky, don't they?
>> Yeah.
>> So, it is a wee bit crusty under here, and we're missing the under tray, like you said, but it's all kind of fairly surface rust, isn't it? It's nothing too concerning.
>> Surface rust. Common for these to to leak because the crush washer doesn't always fit properly.
>> Yeah, I did put a new crush washer on it.
>> Yeah. Sometimes they they move off to the side. So if you tighten it too much, you can push it and it squashes out to the side. So you're on coilovers. So DRC keeps the car super flat. Really flat.
So usually when you put aftermarket coilovers on, we recommend put roll bars on to stop any >> Mhm.
>> uh of the extra roll, but you can't do anything with pitch front to back like DRC would be helping with. So you do have to have the aftermarket suspension set quite stiff >> to try and get back to what uh stock DRC does. If they're leaking, >> the signs of misting around them. Yeah, they're really bad. Really bad.
>> So, they're probably not doing very much. So, no, no, no.
>> Get them replaced.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I've already got replacements at the unit.
>> It's just all the usual stuff. If you want the car to feel a bit flatter, put it on the stiffer settings. Okay.
>> Another one leaking.
>> Yeah. Yeah, we've got that as well waiting for us. So, overall, quick quick inspection above and quick inspection underneath.
>> It's not terrible.
>> Not terrible.
>> I would say it was average.
>> Perfectly average. Yeah. Story of my life. Yeah. All right. So Doug, we've done visual inspection.
>> Y >> uh we know how much power it makes. Now comes the quote unquote exciting part cuz the carbon is going to be cleaned from the intake.
>> Uh tell me tell us why does carbon build up in there? Why is it important to get rid of it?
>> Carbon buildup is there on these engines because you've got DI injectors. Old school cars and newer cars have port injectors that spray fuel into the inlet tract over the top of the inlet valve and then mix in the cylinder. A DI sprays direct into the cylinder and mixes in the cylinder, nothing outside.
So when you get breathed oil or exhaust gases spat back up, now you've got nothing cleaning the top of the intake valve or keeping it cool even. So you bake on any breathed oil, any exhaust gases that come back up and you'll get a black layer. And then over time you'll get a carbon and burnt oil building up on that, building up on that and building up on that.
>> And that does really affect the power of these things. You've had some on the dyno before. I mean, what are the kind of worst results that you've had from carbon buildup?
>> The worst results just from carbon buildup is probably 320 something like that. If you have other issues like lap issues and things, we've had 270 out of them before.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh because they're in a semi- limp mode as well. So if you had a brand new car and you thrashed it, drove it hard from day one, you probably would not drop down the power that much >> cuz as soon as you get 8,000 RPM of air flow over the the valve, it's it's half taken off anything that's trying to build up. So if you drive it like an idiot all the time, >> Yeah.
>> you probably don't get that much building up. So, the lesson here is if you've got an RS4 and you take the kids to school, just rag it first, second gear, >> flatp outside the school gates and then tear away just to keep your engine healthy. Uh, but I'm really intrigued to see what's going to be >> inside the manifold here because I was told by the previous owner it had been carbon cleaned. Now, the bolts look like they've not been taken off for a while.
Also, there's no paperwork. Surely, if you do that, cuz it's not the cheapest thing in the world, you will have some paperwork, but there's no paperwork. All right. So, we'll let Harry do his thing and then what, an hour? Hour and a half or so, we'll have a better idea.
>> Y >> Okay, cool. And then you can give me the good news or the bad news.
>> All right. So, just having a quick look at the valves and um Harry here said it's quite bad. It looks It looks quite disgusting in there. There is no way that this was done a year ago, right?
>> No way.
>> Okay.
>> We we knew that already, but yeah. how bad it is behind that valve there.
>> Yeah. Bloody hell. So, the last time then that this would have been cleaned would have been at MRC probably about 10 12 years ago. So, the fun starts now. Let's get it cleaned.
All right. So, it is now the next morning. Uh we are back at MRC and Bambbury. The uh Bradford RS4 is back on the dyno and you guys have done the full carbon clean. Manifold's back on and yeah, we're hoping for some good results. So Doug, what is the plan today? We're obviously going to get baseline uh power and torque figures.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh and then there's a bit of mapping that you can do. You can you can do so much with the ECU. You can put like an immobilizer in there, ghost immobilizer, which would excite me very much as well.
>> Yeah. Yeah. So we're going to put a put a map switcher on it to start with that runs different timing. So then I can just put that on once and then we can try them to see where we're at with the car, work out what time we want to run on the car, and then we'll take it from there what we end up with. So we'll let we'll probably leave a map switcher on for you so you can run different fuels.
>> Don't make it too complicated cuz if I forget, >> you get instructions. Yeah, >> I I'll have to have you on speed, won't I?
>> You get instructions so you can just see. But once you've done it once, you'll remember it. adjustable launch control on it as well and flat shift and the switch will crackle.
>> Okay, so yeah, we should see uh a nice before and after and hopefully get a bit more power out of it as well because there was a lot of carbon in there, wasn't there?
>> Yeah, it was more than we expected. So, >> okay, perfect. So, 420. Anywhere above 420, I'll be over the moon.
>> I'm expecting more.
>> Are you?
>> Yeah, I'm hoping for more. Yeah.
>> Okay, if you're enjoying this video, then I promise you'll love our car showed fest this Saturday. We're expecting 12,000 of you to attend with liveet track action, two stages with your favorite YouTubers, incredible food, a fun fair, and a massive display of sheds, supercars, and amazing builds.

big improvement. I'm not going to reveal quite yet cuz we're going to do another run.
That is wild. The noise from the exhaust is insane.
OH, WE'RE GOING UP. I don't know about you, but I'm very happy.
>> I think there's more to be had. So, we'll try a little bit more and just see if it'll do a little bit more.
>> So, currently power has gone up from 409 48 >> to 42612.
>> Yeah.
>> And that's just with a carbon clean.
>> Yeah. Well, it was already tuned.
>> Yeah.
>> And there's going to be a little bit more on there. So if it was stock, if it wasn't tuned, it would have been a bit less and there going to be more headroom there left to get bigger gain. But >> but then the torque that's going to be really noticeable from 414 Newton m to 445 new m especially around 5,000. Yeah.
>> Okay. So I'm I'm over the moon.
>> But as you're about to see, things were about to get even spicier.
Yes. What a machine. What a machine. 453 Newton m of torque when this first went on the dyno. 414. So that is a massive increase. All right. So we've got a final power figure of 432.58.
Y. So that's a 21 horsepower increase or thereabouts.
>> 23 >> 23 horsepower increase. Okay. And the torque has also gone up drastically as well. Overall a very very good day. The carbon clean has really done its thing.
Uh your maps have also helped as well.
In the last run you did you were telling me is a safe map for 95 run petrol.
>> If you ever get caught short, you shouldn't really be thrashing your car on bad fuel. But now this map runs 6° less timing. You can if you if you're wanting to enjoy the car, you can still enjoy it and it's got um safe time in advance for >> So the safe map on this car is 407 horsepower which I would have been happy with >> tuned up and carbon cleaned anyway, but we are well above that. So very healthy engine.
>> Yeah, it seems to be all really good.
>> Fantastic. Fantastic. You've also done a few other bits. We've got an immobilizer. We've got launch control.
>> Flat shift.
>> Flat sh flat shift. I'm going to have to get my head around flat shifting. Yeah, it's it's a hard one to to keep your foot planted while you change gear and it's probably not that good on the clutch. And just the the other things are it's got left foot braking enabled, so it won't cut throttle if you left foot breaking.
>> Really? Wow. Okay.
>> And in sport mode, the val the exhaust valves open all the time instead of doing random stuff.
>> So, this car has been well and truly tarted up.
>> Yeah. Everything done.
>> It's quicker. It's going to be faster.
It's got all the gimmicks. It's now the perfect RS4.
>> Yeah. And then hasn't it come a long way? It really has. Well, I guess the only thing left to do is to get an MRC badge on the back and then we'll get out of your hair for now. Thank you very much, Doug.
>> No problem.
>> Absolute wizard. And uh yeah, if you've got an RS4 or any RS Audi model or VW Golf, you do Coopras and everything. You want them tuned up or fixed up or carbon cleaned, you know where to come. Very, very impressive service. Oh. Oh, there's a man with a badge.
>> Oh, okay. Right, Doug, I need your help.
I need your assistance.
>> Left a bit.
>> Left a bit. about there.
>> Yeah, that's good to me.
>> I would say about there, that'll do me.
Yes. With my Bradford RS4 now more powerful than it's ever been, I headed back to the unit to take care of a few more mechanical issues. The biggest of which is these coilovers, which as you can see are completely blown. They are not in a good way. We actually thought that that was like dirt or someone had grease them when we looked at it before, but it's not, is it?
>> It's really not. Now, I've been driving this quite extensively and especially on the motorway, the front end just bounces and it's never settled. And even Jay, who was driving his um F11 the other day, he was like, "Yeah, I could see the whole car like pitching up and down like that." I've actually got a bit of a theory. I reckon where the brakes were so buggered for so long, it was jutddering and it jutddered the shocks for ages and it's shaken them and now they're just blown. And as well as that, I think a lot of the bushes are starting to perish as well. I noticed that the anti-roll bar links, they're they're okay, but they're not great. And although the ball joints are all right, the boots are splitting, which is anote failure. So, we do need to I think if we're taking it apart, we just need to do a refresh.
>> Indeed. So, coilovers are going to go on. We've got some BCS and like Taylor just said as well, all of these arms need to be replaced because the bushes are completely buggered. Drop links are also really unhappy. So, luckily for us, we've got our very good friends Febbe Billstein who are actually sponsoring this episode, who have provided us with a whole assortment of arms, drop links, uh you name it, we've got it to make this car tip top, especially at the front end. And as we all know, the great thing about Febstein is that all of their parts are matching quality. You get a three-year warranty with them as well. And we have fitted not hundreds, but probably thousands of parts onto dozens of cars. We have fitted Febby parts to Big Pete, Blue Pete, Silver Pete, your Supercharged Z3, Rory, your Mini. Oh, my M's had everything.
>> It's had everything done. My E30, your Tuare Egg as well.
>> That had a lot. That needed a lot.
>> Yeah, the list literally goes on and on.
And then if like us, you want to find out what parts Feb's got for your car, then all you need to do is go on to Febbe's fantastic parts finder, type in your vehicle, and then, as you can see here, we've got the arms, we've got drop links, we've got everything. Go to wherever you buy your car parts from, give them the number, and then you can ensure that it's Febbe. Oh yeah. On top of all the usual Febbe parts, they've just rolled out a brand new shock absorber range covering thousands of applications, all OE matching and put through a strict approval process. And if you're chasing something a bit more obscure, the Febbe Plus range covers harder to find parts like interior and exterior trims, while their engine management lineup includes a multitude of sensors and actuators, EGR valves, ignition coils, pretty much anything you can think of. And for all of your Japanese car, do you mind?
>> It was on the cardboard.
>> For all of your Japanese car needs, then uh check out Blueprint, which is a Febbe sister company. Also OE matching quality and a three-year guarantee, but we don't need that one today.
>> What if I've got a Korean car?
>> Blueprint. Okay. My Kia Picto is getting a full reservation.
>> What? There's also one more thing that I bought for this uh vehicle GOING DOWN.
>> WHOA.
>> EXCUSE FINGERS. It's on top of the roof.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WA WHAT ON EARTH? I bought or Rory bought a headliner because this one is very, very saggy.
And we were looking at material to replace that one just to take all the material off uh and then just reskin it.
But Rory found on eBay for £150 this complete headliner. Look at that.
It's It's OE matching quality.
>> Well, it's OE.
>> It actually is. Yeah, it is actually OE.
So yeah, let's have a look at it for the first time. Uh there's a few little I don't know bit of sun damage. Wow, it's very strong, but that will hopefully it's quite easy to get out hopefully. I mean, we were wondering about getting the front or rear windscreen out, but loads of you guys actually in the comments said you don't need to bother.
You can literally just fold the seats flat and then the whole headliner comes out as one unit should bend it or anything like that. One of the front doors.
>> Wait, wait.
>> Yeah, it's quite nice actually. It doesn't stink.
>> That had a cherry air freshener in it.
>> Oh, it has. Smell that.
>> Smells like cherry.
>> Oh, yeah. You guys.
>> Yeah. Cherry. This is my favorite thing.
And you know that event I told you about?
>> Yeah.
>> I've already bought one of these for you.
>> Yeah.
>> Brilliant.
>> This is my favorite thing. Do >> you know he's doing this just to wind me up now? How long have I gone on about these cars for?
>> I've never heard you mention Audi RS4 before the Continental GTC. Never heard you mention. I reckon it's about 100 times. And this gate's got two of them now.
>> It's just trying to wire me up.
>> Oh, should I mention why I've got two?
>> Yeah, you probably should.
>> Okay. Right. If you come come to the back, Rory, there's a problem here.
>> Well, that Yeah, you've got two of them.
>> No, no, no. There's a problem with this car.
>> See, >> it's a lot faster than the blue one.
That's not a problem. That's That's a good problem to have.
>> Now, I like the look of this, but I understand what you mean.
>> I like the look of this. I think it looks better than the Avant, but the big problem is, right, let me just get this for demonstration purposes. Wait, this is such a person.
>> It's missing that bit.
>> Right.
>> Window.
>> Okay.
>> A vamp.
>> Uh-huh.
>> It's missing that.
>> Go and show everyone what you bought. It is nice.
>> Come on now. How has this happened?
>> I really like that car. I would keep it >> forever if I could, >> but I trled it as a family car last weekend. Didn't go well.
>> Yeah, because you have child and dog >> and dog. Maisy Maisie in the front and then child in the back and then Rian in the back. And then I can't put stuff >> really anywhere. I need Maisie in the boot here.
>> Yeah.
>> And then people in there. That's what I need.
>> Yeah.
>> So then I I bought this.
>> All right. So what are we doing with the gray one then is the question. We're fixing it up. It's very, very fast.
We're going to take it on track.
>> We're going to get it perfect.
>> It's going to be perfect. And it's going to be one of the fastest.
>> It's good. It's going to be quicker than Tom Lenthal in his Project 8.
>> Uh, we had to find out. I've done a little bet with Tom that I reckon I'm faster in my S4 RS4 than him in the Project 8. Okay.
>> So, later on in the episode, we're going on track. But my RS4 in there is going to go to one of you guys. We're going to raffle it with LLF. So, if you want to win that car for probably as little as 15 p, then um yeah, stick around because uh it's it's going to them.
>> I will very envious of whoever wins that car cuz it is a masterpiece.
>> It really is. It really is. But if that was an Aan, there'd be no question I'd be keeping it.
>> Yeah.
>> But you've got your van.
>> I do have my van. I really like it, but it is noticeably slower.
>> I think this is probably like 390 horsepower or so.
>> But it does have wing backs. It does have a sunroof and it is blue. Yeah.
>> So, it's it's good car.
>> Yeah. So, I bought this for 16 grand. I bought that for 68, but in parts alone, I'm probably at around 15 or thereabouts. So, that is a 22 grand car that it owes me.
>> So, buying a car from Bradford, not so smart.
>> No, no, it's a financial disaster. But, you know what isn't a financial disaster? Winning this very car for as little as 15p. So, do yourself a favor and enter at the link below to be in with a chance of owning one of the fastest and definitely coolest RS4s in the country. Anyway, time now to fix that sagging headliner. We're going to pull stuff apart.
I'm going to get a screwdriver.
>> Do not break it.
>> I'm not. It's just so well made.
>> There you go. Right. And then how does it come out >> then? Yeah. To you. Maybe.
>> What? Out the front?
>> Yeah.
>> Really?
>> Maybe.
>> Oh, maybe this seat. This seat needs to come back. Hold on.
>> Look at that. An entire ceiling.
>> Yeah. Completely undamaged.
>> It's still even still got the original build sheet on there. Look, it was 31st to the 1st, 2006. And this is all the spec. So, these codes, like one will be color code, one will be an interior code. That is the actual original build sheet for this car.
>> Yeah.
>> What we should do actually, we should stick that to the new headline.
>> We should do that. Yeah. Speaking of, should we have a look at it?
>> Oh, >> 150 quid.
>> That's for nothing >> on eBay.
>> That will do.
>> It's like we were never here.
>> Are we matching quality?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay, >> now we just got to put this back in the car >> in reverse order.
>> Hang on. There's another build sheet here. But we take this off.
>> Wait, hang on. What is this? So, this came from a 2007.
>> Oh, >> so that's a year newer that headliner.
>> So, is this a is this a facelift headliner?
>> Yeah, it will be still. It's still prefaceelift, but it's just a bit newer.
>> So, it doesn't have uh it doesn't have facelift lights.
>> No, no, they're pre-f facelift lights.
They are zen on though.
>> Oh, fantastic. Okay, >> look at us go, girl.
>> It was actually prepared to have to pay about anywhere between 6 and £800 to get this re-trimmed.
Look at us. Yes. Right. Can we get it just over that bit there? Thank you. And then when Taylor's on his bit, we just shift it back and then pop it up.
Right. So, the headlining is in and it looks fantastic. I'm super super happy with that. And also, it was 150 quid.
Now, we are going to tackle the suspension. So, Taylor's going to get started on the rear. I'm going to get started on the front. And then we are going to be fitting this lovely set of BC Racing BR coilovers uh that we pretty much fit to all of our cars. Uh you've got them on your 6 series, your 5 series. I've got them on 3 series.
You've got them on many cars as well. We love them.
>> We do love them. We really do love them.
Uh so this car is going to benefit because we can now get a better Look at this. Rory, look at that in there. That looks disgusting. That has had its day in the sun. So, we're going to put some BC's on there, and then the handling will actually be as good as the rest of the car, which is very excit exciting.
So, I'm going to crack on on the front, Taylor's on the rear, and let's get cracking.
Oh, hang on. There we go. Right. So, that now and then that should Oh, that's actually not in horrendous condition. That Well, these are actually from 2019. We know that.
>> Really?
>> Yeah. 20. They were from before it got written off from memory.
>> But we don't know how long those brakes have been jutddering. And I think the brakes jutddering have really worn out the front suspension of this car prematurely.
>> Yeah, I would agree.
>> But we've got a whole set. We might as well change a whole set. We want it all to be matching.
So, I'm just trying to dejust this spring at the moment cuz it's wound up. Uh, like it's got the adjuster on it for the coil over. It's wound up. It's under tension. So, I'm just trying to wind it.
Don't get it all out.
>> My finger on there.
Ow. I don't know if I want to stand here anymore.
>> Oh. Oh, can we just cut? I could, but it's under tension, so it go. It's just a It's a bad situation to be in, Rory.
I've disconnected the drop link, the suspension, and then also the lower ball joint nut has come off as well. So hopefully take this bolt out and then this arm should be free.
That's the thinking anyway.
There we go. There she goes.
Alex, I'm going to leave you for a second cuz I think there's something very stupid about to happen in the other corner.
>> Fantastic. I'm glad I'm in the opposite corner.
>> Okay.
>> Do you know these were broken? Both of them. It's unbelievable. It's so lucky we're replacing these.
>> It's Well, I mean, look, there's cut marks in these ones as well. That's just dangerous.
>> Do you know this is a fresh brake? I think you've been driving this car too hard. Look at that. Look what you've done to this.
>> It's just weird cuz it smells and it's really hot.
>> No, that's me.
>> This is actually been greased really well and it's free, but it wasn't when it was on the car.
>> Did you know, Taylor, that this anti-roll bar was on its softer setting?
>> No.
>> Yeah, it's got two settings, >> has it? Oh, is that the different holes for >> Yeah, it's the two different holes.
Yeah.
>> So, have you moved it?
>> Well, no. I've completely disconnected it.
>> Are you going to move it on its >> Yeah, I'm going to go full hard. You know me.
It's really seized. I might have to um tighten it back up again a bit. So, if you ever get a bolt like this, sometimes it's actually good to try and tighten it back up just to clean the threads up.
Oh, it's on fire. Oh, He set the whole thing on fire. Now remember, Alex, you you're you're setting fire to everything around the bolt and not the bolt.
>> Alex, you've you've set fire to the car.
>> Hang on. I'll I'll put it out for you.
>> Really? Will you?
>> There you go. It's going out.
>> Ready? And hey, one bolt.
>> Oh yeah. Look at that.
See? Right. So, the top mounts, you have to take this off.
And then there's one bolt there. I think one down there.
>> Oh, they don't make that easy, do they?
>> And then we have to drop it down. And then there's another three bolts that hold the coil over to the top hat.
Can you get to the top bolts?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Right.
>> Yeah.
>> Suspension is out.
>> Just gone through the floor.
What?
>> Oh my god.
>> I've just taken this off the other side.
>> Yeah.
>> And there's a lot more >> down this one. And >> Okay. So, it was only the one side, but it >> is. Wow.
>> That's okay. That's nailed. All right.
So, with that, it's now 6:00. We're going to call it day. And then we'll be back on Monday to fit the new BC Racing suspension, fit the new arms from Febbe, and then >> this car's done.
>> Then we need a light bulb >> and it's done.
>> And then it is done. And then we go to track.
>> Yeah, >> I'm very excited.
>> Same.
>> All right. Good day.
>> Good day. Well done, everyone.
>> Good day to you, sir. All right. So, it is now a few days later. Um, we are going to continue with the build, finishing off the RS4. We've been away.
We've been on our classics road trip which you would have seen last week I believe. I must say Tom Lenthal is actually quite nervous because in a couple of days time this is going on track against his project 8. So I'm hoping that us doing all of this will make this as dynamically good as possible. The Michelin tires as well.
I'll be able to test for the first time on track. I've got flat shifting. I've got launch control. I've got pops and bangs which makes the car faster obviously. Pops and bangs isn't it?
Yeah. Yeah. But you're struggling with something because you've done two of the BC's already and you've been down here for about half an hour.
>> Yeah, I've put the rear on this side. Um I've put the front corner on this side, but I when I took it out, when I buzz the bolt out down there, it fell down the bottom of the skull. So, I'm just trying to fish it out.
>> Is it an engine out job? Is that what you're saying?
>> It might as well be at the moment. It's a bit fiddly.
>> So, why don't I do the arms once you've done that, and then you can get started putting the BC on on that side. Speaking of, we have got our lovely BC Racing BR series 32-way adjustable. So, >> yeah.
>> You find Bolt.
>> Yeah.
>> You fit this.
>> Buzz this in. Then you can put the arms on.
>> Car goes up. I'll do the arms and then you can continue on the rear. Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> All right. But for now, Rory, bit of cake.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. There you go. Come on. Come on.
>> Rory's Mjaro is wearing off.
>> Oh, yeah. Go on. Open. Ah. Go on. Get the icing in. Go on, girl.
Sorry, I'm trying to nut here and you're stinking the place out, >> Alex.
>> Yeah, >> I'm going to need your assistance.
>> Uh-oh. Why? What's happening?
>> Well, I need to fit the rear springs.
>> Oh, okay.
>> And the bar has come out.
>> I've got the special.
>> Yeah, this is the Wait.
Taylor's trying to figure out how to put a very large object into a very small hole.
>> Yeah, I am. Yeah.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah. Oh, look at that. Straight in there. We are done. Everything is tight.
We got new bolts, new nuts on there. We got all of our Febby arms on. Uh we jacked it up, tightened up all of the bushes and everything. And now we're ready to put the wheels on. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. So, I'm going to put these on. I'm not going to torque them up yet. I need to lower it down and just check the ride height.
>> Yeah.
>> And then >> we don't want it to be slammo, do we?
>> No, we want it to be about where it was.
>> Yeah.
>> Right.
>> Button on the side. OH, >> THAT LOOKS that actually looks all right. It might be a bit low at the rear.
>> I might have to wind that up a bit more, but that's okay.
>> Do you think?
>> Or >> Oh, that sits >> actually.
>> Is it on the blocks?
>> It might be still sat on the blocks.
Right. Let's have a little >> Oh, no. Okay. All right. I think we're cooking on G. Yeah, this is off.
>> Oh, okay. That actually looks all right.
>> That looks very sporty. And we got new arms, new BCs, and then on Monday, we get to test everything out. This is a package for now is done.
>> Lunch lunch. With the car now in the best mechanical shape of its life, the last piece of the restoration puzzle is to get the bodywork looking like new, too. So Robin from Viking Detail cleaned and detailed the life out of the RS4 to transform it from this into this.
And doesn't it now look the part with all the bells, whistles, and power that will ensure it drives, handles, feels, and smells spectacular, which it needs to because the RS4 is now in Wales to be put through its paces against the fastest car I know.
All of the hard work on the RS4 culminates to today. We're at Landal Circuit. I've got my mighty Bradford RS4 and all of these parts, all of this money, bearing in mind of about £22,000 deep. 22? Yeah. I'm hoping that this car will be competitive against this man in that vehicle. Tell us about it.
>> That's my standard project A.
>> Oh, so what you're saying is your car standard and mine modified.
>> No modifying to that car. at a disadvantage. Yes, you are. Yes, you are. So, as a reminder, 432 horsepower from a 4.2 L naturally aspirated V8, Tom.
>> Uh 600.
>> Yes. From a supercharged >> 5 L V8.
>> 5 L V8 with not a manual gearbox.
>> No, it's got an auto, so it's a bit slow changing gear. You haven't you got some quicky shifty thing going on?
>> Yes, I had I do have flat shifting, but I don't want to ruin the clutch. So, anyway, what we're going to do is we're going to find out can this car beat that car? Bearing in mind that car is worth £100,000 more >> at least.
>> Ben Collins actually took this car around at the beginning of the year and did a 46 second. So, can you beat Stigs time?
>> I'd like to see how close I can get to the Stigs time. Yes, I'm interested to know that.
>> If I beat it, I'll be dancing around the track naked.
>> Oh god, I can't wait to see that. So, ultimately, >> ultimately Tom is here to beat Stig's lap time in his own car and I am here to beat Tom's lap time in the RS4. And because the RS4 is very much the underdog in this shootout, Tom is going out first to set the lap times, I need to try and beat. Best of four laps wins the battle.
>> Oh, I'm nervous. I'm nervous. So, Tom's just going to roll straight into it.
He's going to do a kind of sighting lap and then away he goes.
>> The biggest problem that Tom will have is the fact he's afraid of getting that car broken.
>> Get ready. Here we go.
>> Okay, here we go. First line. He's really going for it.
>> But have a look at him on the chicane here. Look, he he breaks quite early and then he does like quite a >> Look how fast it is though.
>> Look, you see what I mean?
>> Yeah.
>> He slows down a lot for that.
>> But he does have 600 horsepower.
>> A bit better.
>> 47.6.
>> 47.6. I can't even.
>> So, Stig got a 47 Stig got a 46 dead.
>> Yeah.
That was better.
Come on. COME ON. ATTACK.
>> Oh my tire.
>> Wa wa wa wa wa wa wa wa wa. Tell me that was faster. That was faster.
>> 47.2.
>> Yeah. No, he's getting slower.
>> Okay, that's good. I mean, >> it's the fatigue of being an old man.
>> It is.
>> Okay. Right. So, this is make or break now. Will he beat his first lap time?
COME ON. OH, look at it.
Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Has he made it?
>> Oh, he's made it. Oh, >> quicker. 46.9.
>> Which was the time to beat because his fourth and final lap was even slower than his first. So, after coming back into the pits, it was my turn to put pedal to the metal.
>> Are you nervous, Tom?
>> Yes. But not for me, for him. because of the embarrassment of him being potentially beaten by an old man. I can accept it. I'm over the hill. The best laps are out of me. All right. Okay.
Time for the Audi RS4 to shine. Remember about 2 months ago, this was on a driveway in Bradford. Looking very, very sorry for itself. Okay. Anyway, enough chitter chatter.
Time for me to do my time lapse.
So what? Just remind us what what what's it? So there's a $500 bet half of which goes to charity.
>> Yeah, something like that. I can't quite remember. I was drunk.
>> I feel very very happy in this car.
Anyway, enough talking. Time for the laps.
Hard on the brakes into second. Slow in, fast out. That is the key here. The brakes are great. The suspension feels spot on.
Oh, that was hard.
And I've got great grip from the Michelin Fives. Woo!
Keep it smooth, Alex. Here we go.
All right, first laps up 47.1.
Oh, God.
Washing wide there. That was terrible.
I am giving it by all people. That I promise.
Come on. Grip. Grip. Grip.
47.7. He's got slower. He's got slower.
It's happening.
>> This is what I wanted to happen.
>> Try to be a little bit smoother here.
Come on.
Come on. Use all the track. Nice.
Woo.
Oh, no, no, no, >> Tom.
>> Yeah, go on.
>> Your time was a 4697.
>> Yeah, >> he just did a 46.98.
>> Oh, dear. No.
>> With my fourth and final lap also off the pace, I headed back in to find out if I'd done enough to beat the Project Eight.
>> Remind me, what was Tom's best lap time?
>> So, Tom's best lap time was a 46.97.
>> Yeah, >> you did.
Tom, do you want to say it?
>> Can I tell it?
>> You did a 46.98.
>> NO.
NO.
>> YES. NO. YES.
>> 46.98 and Tom's was a 46.97.
>> NO.
>> So anyway, what happened? Well, as you can see, both cars are level pegging at the end of the bus stop, but with a slightly tighter line, I managed to get the RS4 ahead into the fast righthander.
At the curbs on the left, the Project 8's power has closed the gap again. And on the back straight, the Jaguar gets ahead by two car lengths into the chicane, which is where the RS4 makes up ground because I'm not scared to take a lot more curb. And with more exit speed and a tighter line, the Audi is ahead, which is where it stays until the 5 L supercharged V8 just manages to edge ahead past the straight finish line.
>> You literally couldn't make it up. No.
>> And that's what you get.
>> Congratulations. You spend another 100 grand. Right.
500 quid Tom goes to you. And as we said, £200 of that is going in your pocket >> and £300 is going to Cherry.
>> What's the charity?
>> Um, >> is it Auto Alex Limited?
>> That's Tom Len. I know. I haven't made my mind off. Probably going to give it to Great Orman Street. There you go.
Fantastic. Give it to Give Great Orman Street.
>> Cool. All right. We'll have a link below as well. If you can donate then that'd be fantastic.
>> But Tom, >> I'm so happy to say it. I'm so happy.
You were victorious on the day. You were victorious. NO, >> NO, NO.
>> Thank you.
>> And with that, that now rounds off buying this car, fixing this car, taking it to MRC, putting all the lovely bits on it, and then finally taking it on track. Tom was victorious on the day.
And uh it's been great. It's been really fun.
>> That was good fun.
>> It's been really quite tense, actually.
>> It's been very tense.
>> Not that we're very competitive. No, we're not competitive. The sexual tension has been powerful, hasn't it?
And with that, thank you again for watching. Please like and subscribe. And also subscribe to Tom Lento's channel >> channel.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Or if you've got a Jaguar, take it to him because he's very fast.
>> All right.
>> Can't believe it. I cannot believe it.
Bye-bye.
>> Brilliant.
