A sobering reminder that intellectual hoarding is not growth; true mastery is measured by a change in behavior rather than the mere accumulation of concepts.

The Japanese Philosopher Who Redefined Learning追加:
A Japanese philosopher named Ahaid Dogen built an entirely new school of thought by asking one question no one else would. How do you know you actually understand something? And his answer to this was so brutal. Namely, if it hasn't changed what you can do, then you don't understand it. For instance, you don't understand focus merely because you've read about it, even if you can recite back all the details about the science of it. Instead, you understand focus when your mind drifts and you're able to bring it back. Likewise, you don't understand discipline because you can define it. You understand it when you act despite resistance. You see, most intelligent people get trapped here.
They're fluent in the explanation, yet weak in experiential understanding. So, the next time you learn something, don't ask what it literally means or what model best captures it. Instead, train yourself to additionally ask what the experience of that thing is like.
Because as Dogen understood, literal understanding of a concept does not reveal the full meaning of that concept.
