I FOUND GOLD in Scotland… I Couldn’t Believe It!Added:
You know how I started this video by saying what a really awful times detecting I've had recently.
Talk about breaking my duck. I'm having a we lie down and I've hit gold.
I can't believe it.
Welcome back to the blowy fields of Perthure in Bonnie, Scotland. It's windy. It's pretty cold. But we've got hopefully um a full day's detecting, which would be fantastic if I find something. But there's some good news, which is the potato planting has been delayed by a week or so. Uh it's turned a lot wetter. It's turned colder. So, the farmer's holding off probably until next week at the earliest. So, the good news for me is that means I've got multiple fields that I can go out and detect on. I'm going to start with a field that I was close to the other day when I got that beautiful silver medal.
Um, more on that later. I'm going to do a little separate video on it, but I'll come back to you on it. If you haven't watched it, go and watch the previous video. Um, there's an old farm uh which has been demolished. It was removed in the beginning of the 1900s, but it shows on maps way back in the 17 and 1800s, and the belief is there's been a farmstead there since probably the 1600s, maybe even the 1500s. So hopefully a reasonable bit of history.
Add to that, there are Bronze Age and Iron Age monuments. There's a Roman fort about half a mile away and uh lots and lots of history in and around the area.
So, I'm hoping there's going to be something to be had. In addition to that, I've always got the medieval fort and village site that I can go to because it's a 10-minute walk away. So, I'm going to start down here, see how I get on, and if it's not so good after a few hours, then I'm going to head up to the medieval fort site. So, as ever, if you're not already subscribed to the channel, please hit the button and help support the channel's growth. It's starting to rain now as well. That wasn't forecast. Aquil, let's go and see if we can find any treasures.
About 4 and 1/2 minutes.
Sounds pretty decent. Sounds coinike.
I hate to temp ft. You have had a lot of aluminium off this field in the past, so could be the dreaded bottle top. Rain's coming on again. Wind's picking up, too.
Are we off to a flyer?
Come on. Where are you?
Not there.
Well, maybe it was in my hand. Well, it is there. It's there. I can't see it for looking at it. Ah, we got a coin. Well, it's a spendable.
It's a pound, I think. And it is.
It is Elizabeth the second. H ah the second. I was going to say the first there. That would be a few hundred years out. It's a spend. Well, nonspendable spendable. Does that make sense? I've dropped it first thing and I've dropped it.
It is It is a a pound. They phased these out a few years ago. They've now got a a gold and silver color to them. Uh 1983.
There you go.
Apparently, you can take them into the bank and get them changed, but it's a coin. First hole.
84.
Shallow, I think.
Maybe not. Or I dug in the wrong place, I think. I think I've dug in the wrong place, but let's see.
Still on the Garrett carrot. No.
Drapped on its edge.
Well, I'm not going to lie, folks. This is absolutely rubbish.
I've uh done five and a half hours and all I've got to show for it is a non-spendable spendable pound. I'm just digging junk constantly. Um I've got a sore hip. I've got a sore elbow. I moved fields from where I was. Um 10-minute walk up, changed to a different field.
and uh just nothing doing there. Moved into the field next door which I'm just about to start in. So this will be this will be my fourth field and um yeah just been really really really poor. I don't know if it's a a state of mind, but I've just had no luck recently. This is I think my sixth dig in the last two weeks because I've had a bit of time off and um I haven't posted any videos for the other five. And to be honest, this one isn't looking good either. I suspect this might actually be the the second hole that you've actually seen me dig throughout this whole video.
65. It's pouring marine again. If this is not something good, then I think I'm giving up.
And yet again, it's junk.
Aluminium. Plenty of that around.
Well, folks, believe it or not, seven hours of detecting yesterday and my only find of any significance was a non-spendable spendable pound. Unbelievable.
I've been on an absolutely rotten run recently. I've been out five times in the last two weeks and effectively all that I found is a pound coin, which I can't even spend.
So, I'm a glutton for punishment. The sun is shining. I've got about 4 and a half, maybe 5 hours. I'm coming to a new field which hasn't yet been planted. And surely things can only get better.
Only one way to find out. For sure, they can't get any worse. But if you're a metal detectorrist, you know the feeling. Onwards and upwards.
One hour in. That just about sums up my detecting luck for the last um five or six digs. Not even a whole ringpool.
Half a ring pool. Phenomenal.
We have 1 hour and 17 minutes on the clock. It's the best sounding target yet.
I've taken my mic off. Sorry, my headphones off to hold them next to the mic just to show you the different sounds of this target on the different tones.
That's the Makers program 82. This is Michael's Forager 8182.
This is the Jet Roll 4.0.
Best sounding for me, the tone anyway.
The Jet Roar program.
Still an 82, but much squeaker pitch, squeakier pitch. This is the Jetrol 4.1.
Again, nice tone, better than the others. And then lastly, this is sensitive full tones.
And that's it on the square tones.
So, they're all picking it up. But for me, that is a really lovely crisp noise that the other programs don't seem to have. Now, it doesn't mean that it's got to be a good target, but just to show you that uh these programs are all slightly slightly confusing in terms of tone, but Jethro, I think, is going to give me a we tutorial.
I thought it was a lead seal.
something lead.
Well, there you go. It is a great big lump of lead. I don't have my cloth with me, so I can't give it a clean for you.
Nothing significant, but that is a big whopping bit of lead. Could be any age.
But there you go. That's the different tones that I'm up against.
Well, it's probably my best find in six stigs.
It is a little shot.
definitely been fired probably from a pistol looking at the size of it and it could be what 15 16 17 early 1800s a sign of life other than a ringpool and a non-spendable pound.
Is it a silver or a button? I think it's going to be a button unfortunately cuz all the makings of a tombach it is.
It's got that raised bit in the middle.
Well, again, it's another sign of life.
Probably sometime in the late 17 to the beginning of the 1800s.
Things are getting better ever so slightly.
I've already had a look and it might be a coin.
72. Again, the tone is not great.
Right there.
Bit of an imprint. Oh, I don't think it's a coin. I think it's a button.
It is. It's a big dandy button. I think.
Yep.
It's got a little flattened shank on the back, but it's a big dandy button. Okay, we'll give it a clean up. It's probably a plain one, but just in case.
Now, am I imagining it or are there a pair of breasts looking at me?
Kind of looks like a torso, does it not with a pair of boobies or am I just being Well, let's not answer that. What do you think? Am I imagining it or is that what I'm seeing? If it is, that will be a first. and um Dandy Button date wise sometime in the 18th century late 18th century into the beginning of the 19th century. Let me know. Am I seeing things or is there a torso?
Suddenly we're getting quite a few targets. Maybe we've hit a we hot spot.
54 this time. Not a great sound. Once again it looks like a kind of Tomach style button.
Oh, it's the back of a button.
It's a two-piece.
So, that's where the shank would have been attached.
And then there would have been a dome on that side. Possibly a military or a livery button. Shame it's missing its face cuz it would have likely been decorated.
1800s, more than likely.
There's something you don't see every day. Think that's a little Is it a gyroopter? But there's more than one.
It's got a wee pal following after him.
That' be an amazing way to look for crop marks, wouldn't it?
Fair old headwind up there, I'm sure.
Very nice.
A big shout out to Jethro who um who got in touch with me because I'd asked him a few questions about settings.
And this is a button. I thought it was a chance it was a coin, but it is a button. But he gave me some infield tips. So I had to turn my kilohz up from 100 to 350. I had to change the reactivity and uh tweak a few other little things around. So thank you to Jethro for helping me with some technical changes which hopefully is going to make the audio sound a little bit better for me. But ultimately I'm used to full tones and at the moment the programs that I'm on are only I think two tone. So that's not going to be helping me massively. But we've got a button straight away. Um 7072 and it's probably 17 early 1800s.
The difference in the tones is absolutely brilliant.
This is a really nice one. 71. Oh, well done Jethro. Couple of tweaks and all of a sudden it becomes a different machine.
71.
Oh, I don't believe it. I don't believe that.
That's a gold coin.
That is a gold. I don't believe it.
I think it is. Oh my god. I think that's a gold coin.
I think that is a gold coin. Oh, I don't believe it. I don't believe it. It is.
It's a It's a half sovereign, I think.
Oh my god.
Oh my god. That is a gold coin.
It bloody is.
Oh my god.
Folks, I cannot believe it. I absolutely cannot believe it.
Talk about Oh my god.
I just did a video called uh Jethro there to say look you're not going to believe this. You've given me tweaks to the program. I mean look honestly to put it into perspective. I've dug uh I dug a hole over there which was a button. I dug a hole there which was a bit of lead and I dug a hole here and I've got a gold coin.
Absolutely. I mean, I just said, "Jethro, honestly, you are you've just completely transformed this machine in in a few minutes by sending me a few messages."
And what he said to me was, "Look, you've got to change the hertz to suit your hearing. There's no point in having a program and it's not suited to how you hear." Which clearly the machine wasn't.
It worked brilliant for him, but it didn't work for me with my deaf ear. Um, and folks, it's Edward. It's dirty Bertie.
And I think that's a half sovereign.
I think that that is a half sovereign.
I am going to just try and peel some of that off. No, I'm not. I'm going to wet it. You know that. I'm going to wet it.
I cannot believe that I've just got a gold coin.
I think this is like other than a spendable coin. This is the first coin I've had in like six digs and I've hit gold.
Unbelievable.
Right, let's try and stop trembling.
Just trying to get out the wind as best as I can, but try and keep you in the sunlight. There we go. That's better.
Look at the color of that.
Oh my goodness me.
That is an absolutely stunning Edward IIIth.
I think it's a half sovereign. I think.
And on the back, George and the Dragon 1910.
Well, a brand new field never detected.
And it's pretty much the only good thing that I found so far.
So far, folks, I cannot believe this. I have been pulling my hair out. I It's the first coin I've had off this field. Brand new permission.
And it's the first coin that I've had.
It's the first non spendable coin that I've had in six digs. And it's gold.
It's Edward IIth. It's got a few little scuffs on it. I mean, come on. It's been rattling about in the ground for probably over a hundred years. Couple of nicks just in there. A few dents up on the corner here. But on the whole, it is in remarkably good condition. The sun has come out as well, just to show it off in its glory. On the back there, you have got George slaying the dragon. This is St. George, and he was adopted as the patron saint of England around about 1350. when Edward III of England came up with the order of the Garter which is England's highest order and oldest order of chivalry and St. George was born in Capidokia Anatolia Anolia in modern day Turkey he uh he was actually a member of the Ptorian Guard.
He uh he was killed during a purge by the emperor Dletian in the 3rd century when he refused to recant his his faith as a Christian. And as a result there was a Christian purge and poor old uh George was uh was crucified or executed as a result and uh he later was adopted as patron saint by England century a millennia later.
Now back in the day this was half a pound at the time there was 240 p to the pound. So this was worth 120 or 10 shillings.
And um it had a pretty decent spending power. For your average laborer, this was 7 days wages. This was a week's wages.
This would have paid your rent for a bog standard fairly basic house for probably 2 weeks. This is half a month's rent.
This would have bought you somewhere between about 50 and 80 pints of beer.
You could have bought something like 150 loaves of bread with this, or certainly over a hundred loaves of bread with this. Um, you could have heated your house for a month with coal with this coin.
A serious amount of money to lose. And how this ends up in a field, I have got no idea. But I think this is I think this is possibly my fifth gold coin that I've had in uh 26 years of metal detecting. I've had three hammereds and I think this is my third half sovereign. Now, you always get someone who says, "It's too it's too um clean to be real. It's it's faked."
Because they seem to think that gold when it goes in the ground tarnishes or rusts. The reason we value gold so highly is because you could bury this coin for 10,000 years and you would dig it up and it would look like the day you buried it. That is why we hold gold in such high value. Unbelievable.
It doesn't get any better than this.
What a feeling. Wait till I go and see the farmer. He is going to be absolutely over the moon. He said, "I don't think you'll find anything out there." Just shows you.
I have to also say a huge thank you to Jethro. I phoned him. I phoned him just after I dug it up because I literally couldn't believe it. He's just 10 minutes before tweaked the machine, I've messaged him and said, "Oh, it seems to be working quite well now. The tones are so much better." And like three holes later, 5 to 10 minutes after making the changes, I find a gold coin. And you heard the target. It sounded really good. The tone was absolutely brilliant.
Jethro, you're my hero. Thank you so much.
Just in case, it's another gold.
Honestly, I'm not walking around this field. I'm floating around this field.
Yes, it's uh it's not old. It's what 16 years old, but it's gold. It is gold.
Don't know what that is in my hand. Ah, there. Just another piece of junk.
Look at that. Sounded just like a gold coin.
That folks is why you got to dig a hole.
Listen to this. Now we're out.
A lot better. Coin contender possibly.
Nope. Huh? Nope. Thought I saw a coin there.
No. No. It's there. Ah, it's a button.
It's a button. But it looks like a military one. Oh, I was going to get my little pick there, but I don't have it with me cuz it's attached to my belt.
Oh, it is a nice one.
Okay, I'm going to do this. In fact, no, you know what? I'll do it with water.
That's probably going to be the best job. So, let's do it on camera.
It's a military button. It looks like we've got a little coronet or a little horn and it's green.
Ah, I recognize that variety.
I've had a few of these over the years.
That is, I do believe the Royal Fuselers, I think, because they've got an elephant.
You can see the letters A S A Y E. Now that was a famous battle that was fought in India, hence the elephant. The battle of Asi I think is how you pronounce it.
And it was fought between the Maratha Empire.
I remember that by the word Marathon Maratha and the um the East India Company, British Army East India Company. And they also had Indian troops as well. And it was a really really major victory for the general who was in charge who was called the sir. I think he was major general was his title at that point and he was sir Arthur Wosley I think was his name but later people knew him as his other name which was the Duke of Wellington Duke of Wellington who was in charge of British forces at the battle of Waterloo in 18 164 14 1814 I'm going to go with but I'll put it up there um but yeah this was a a huge victory for the East India Company in India because they were outnumbered something like 10 to1. It was something like 10,000 British and Indian troops against a Maratha army of something like 90 or 100,000 and Wley described it even after Waterloo as his greatest ever military victory. I think the Scottish regiment at the time was called something like the 72nd regiment of foot and I think he described them as something like his fighting Scotsman or such like and later they changed different names as regiments merged and eventually they became the Royal Scots fuseliers which is when I think this button's from and then I think they're now part of the Royal Scots Regiment. So they've been amalgamated once again. I'll put all that information up there as I say it wrong. But the gist of it is I think that this is the Royal Fuselers which puts it probably Second World War period. Might be First World War as well, but probably 1939 to 45. Wonderful. That's a really nice find. Beautiful button. Shame the back's missing, but still a lovely condition.
We've got a sunbather.
Right there.
Looks like Oh, it might actually be a farthing.
It is. Haven't had a we farther than in a while. Well, there you go.
George the 6.
Queen Elizabeth the second's father.
And we've got a little rain on the back.
One of the smallest birds in the British Isles. That's a really nice one. 1942.
Lovely. Farthing comes from the old I think it was Anglo-Saxon word fling or fling which means a quarter. So it was a quarter of a penny which 240 p to the pound. That would mean that there's 960 of these to the pound.
Now in 1942 that ain't getting you much.
Um, I mean a stale outofdate bread roll maybe from a bakery, maybe a small sweet for a child like a caramel or a chocolate or such like. Uh, that's about it really. Very very small change but a big year 1942 in World War II. Big turning point for Germany you and also for Japan. Now I think about it because you had the battle of Stalingrad began in 1942 and that was the turning point for the Germans.
There was also the defeat of RML in North Africa by Montgomery General Monty and in America or sorry in the Pacific America I think it was the Battle of Midway and also Guadal Canal I think as well which were turning points in the conflict against Japan too. So very very big year and a lovely little coin.
Fantastic.
Well, what a day, folks. Unbelievable.
Back on the gold for what seems like the first time in ages. But then some of you will probably be saying that's like five or six, five, I think it's five gold coins that I've had in 26 years. Some people have been detecting for 30, 40 years and haven't had one. So, I do think myself very lucky. but just came at the most unexpected point.
I'm really looking forward to going and showing the farmer because he was just totally like, "Oh, you won't find anything." No, there'll be nothing there. Nothing at all. Just shows you.
Um, let's have a we look at the best from today.
What a way to break your duck.
This little coin here was the only thing I got for about seven and a half hours of metal detecting yesterday and go to a new field, new permission, and boom, suddenly, I mean, let's face it, I didn't get a lot of lot of finds, but what a way to h get back on it. 1910 gold half sovereign. Absolutely phenomenal. What a coin.
Absolutely brilliant.
I got another we coin which is the Faring which I got towards the end there which is 1942.
And I got that lovely oop upside down. Uh I got that lovely button with the elephant which I think is the um Scots fuselers. I think is the Scots fuseliers, but they've definitely got an association with an older regiment which I think is the 72nd regiment of foot with the battle of Asi with the major general I forget his name. Wsley I think it's Wsley. Wley Wsley. Um I got my funny button which kind of looks a bit like there's a pair of breasts on it. Let me know. Musk ball. Few buttons. Um, but you know what? Gold. It's every metal detectorrist's dream. And the sun has just popped out at the right time. Not old, but it's gold. Thank you, Jethro.
Absolutely transformed my day and transformed the detector. Phenomenal.
What a day, folks. What a day. I went to see the farmer. He's a lovely old guy.
And uh he was absolutely amazed. He's like, "You found that there? I don't understand." Um wondering how on earth it got there. I showed him the other finds as well. He loved the little button. He did say he thought there was a military connection to the house or to the farm. I don't know what. He says he's going to look into it and ask his son uh who knows more about the history of the farm and then he'll come back to me. So absolutely over the moon. I said to him, "Look, the deal is 50/50 if I find something good. So what I can do is I would really like to keep the coin because the fines mean a lot to me, a lot more to me than the money." Um, I think the going rate of a half sovereign at the moment is around about£500550 from what I can see online. So I said to him, "Look, I'll I'll effectively buy you out. So, I'll give you, you know, £250 275.
Um, I'll keep the coin and you get half half the money. Um, and and he was like, "No, no, no, no. You found it. You found it. That could have been in that field for another hundred years and we would never have known and I would never have benefited." But I said, "No, look, that's the rule. That's the way I work.
50/50. So, um, so I'll get some money for you." So, so he was over the moon.
Um and and you know he was just like, "No, you just have it. Keep it. It's yours." Um but no, everyone has to benefit. So, uh unbelievable. I mean, as I said, I think in the video, what a way to break your duck. I've had five digs that have been terrible. I mean, absolutely terrible. Really struggling with the machine, with the tones, and then Jethro, thank goodness for Jethro, explains to me, "No, no, no. need to tweak the kHz just to suit your hearing and then have a little play about with another couple of settings and bang immediately straight away it's tones are suddenly crisper. You heard earlier in the video I think I recorded I think a lump of lead that I dug up how the tones just weren't as crisp as I'm used to and um phenomenal absolutely phenomenal. So I'm over the moon absolutely over the moon. I mean, as I say, gold is just the dream find for everyone and um it's been a while. So, uh yeah, ecstatic.
Absolutely brilliant. So, thank you all for watching. Um what a day. What an emotional roller coaster. As ever, if you're not already subscribed to the channel, then please hit the button and help support the channel's growth. I'm going to drive home. My wife for a change is going to be impressed at what I've found. Can't wait. Thanks all for watching and we'll see you all on the next dig. Take care. Hit that button.
Give me a thumbs up. Share with your family and friends and leave a comment.
See you all soon. Take care.
