Mary Carson Breckinridge. An Appalachian hero.Added:
Mary Carson Breckinridge arrived in Eastern Kentucky with a plan and a notebook. She had trained as a nurse, worked with the American Committee for devastated France after World War I, and then studied to be a midwife at the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies and observed rural health services in the Scottish Highlands. Those experiences convinced her that combining nursing and the practice of midwives could save lives in the American mountains.
She organized the Kentucky Committee for Mothers and Babies and then formally launched the Frontier Nursing Service in 1925 to bring trained nurse-midwives into remote hollers.
