The Jewish cemetery in Węgrów, Poland, which existed since the 17th century and served a community that grew from 20% to nearly 50% Jewish population by 1940, was systematically destroyed during the German occupation when Nazis executed the Jewish population, burned bodies in mass graves, and removed gravestones for construction; only fragments survived and were later assembled into the Węgrów Lapidarium, a memorial constructed in 1982 that preserves the memory of a community whose history stretched back centuries before their near-total annihilation during the Holocaust.
