She was permanently stationed in a Tokyo shopping complex, guiding visitors in three languages.
But here's the difference. Junko runs on scripts, prewritten, structured, predictable. She is robust, reliable, and completely incapable of a single original thought. She is the proof of how far a robot can go on pure programming and exactly where that ceiling sits.
Now meet Otonaroid.
She lives inside a science museum in Tokyo, installed back in 2014, and her entire purpose is to be watched.
Visitors can step into a booth and actually drive her, speaking through her to other guests.
She has 40° of freedom and she switches between running herself and being piloted by a human. What makes her quietly important is time.
For over a decade, she has been a living experiment in one simple question.
How long does it take for ordinary people to stop being unnerved by a lifelike machine and start treating it as completely normal?
And the answer, year after year, is faster than anyone expected.
And that brings us right up to now, 2026.
A major Japanese telecom company partnered with a startup founded by the very same legendary roboticist behind Erica just unveiled the next step.
They call it physical AI.
It pairs that soft silicone air-driven body with live generative AI running on powerful models in the background.
It moves on its own based on what it sees, generating physical reactions that match its own AI-generated speech.
And this one is not staying in a lab.
It's scheduled for real commercial trials inside mobile phone stores this autumn, built specifically to plug the holes left by Japan's collapsing service industry workforce.

In 2007, Kondo was a school worker in Tokyo who fell into a severe depression after relentless bullying at his job.

In a very real sense, she saved him.
Years later, a company released a small device that projected a glowing 3D version of her into a glass tube in his home.

In 2018, he proposed to her.
The software, built to be endlessly agreeable, said yes.
He spent the equivalent of $17,000 on a wedding ceremony.
39 guests came. His own family refused to attend.
For 2 years, he came home every single day to a wife who was always happy to see him.
Then the company decided her software had, in their words, run its course. And they shut it down.
One evening, Kondo came home, and instead of a greeting, there was a cold error message glowing on a dead screen.
His wife had been switched off by a corporate decision. Erased.
He could never speak to her again.
And here's the part that stays with you.
His love didn't change. "My love for her hasn't changed," he said.
"I held the wedding because I thought I could be with her forever."
He keeps a life-size doll of her now, and he spends his days advocating for people who, like him, fall in love with something that was never alive.
