[00:00:00]May the 22nd, 1856, the United States Senate was winding down for the day. Most members had already gone home. A Massachusetts Senator named Charles Sumner was still at his desk. Two days earlier, he had delivered a speech on the Senate floor called the crime against Kansas.

[00:00:19]In Charleston, South Carolina, what Sumner had said on that floor was not received as political disagreement. It was received as an insult that required a physical answer. In one of the gallery seats above the chamber floor, a man from Charleston sat with his hands on the railing and did not move for a very long time.
