This Solar Kiln Build Just Hit a MAJOR Milestone!Added:
Welcome back to the Wallace Farm and Sawmill. And today guys, as you can see, we may have gotten a lot further than the last video on the kiln build. And we got a lot of things happening, but the main focus of today's storyline on this kiln build is going to be putting that siden on the building. As you can see, I'm going to take you over here and show you. We've already got the roof on there. Put a whole roof on and we didn't even get any shade. Isn't that crazy?
>> It's terrible. Now that I got the dad joke of the day out of the way, let's go ahead and show you what I've come up with so far on the kiln. There is the entire roof system installed. Went ahead and painted that black on top to uh draw in as much heat and energy from the sun as possible. Well, before we can get any further in this build, we actually have got to saw some siding. And I got something in my way over here. The sawmill. Let me show you what I'm talking about. So, there's another pack ready to go into the kiln. We're going to go ahead and we're going to stack it right over there on that one. Right. But we want to saw some siding today and just decided, you know what? Let's fire up the boardwalk and saw some siding for the kiln build. I got some leftover stuff here for stickers and a couple two buys I got to cut up. So, we got a few things. We got the work before the work.
You know what I'm saying?
>> We do have the work before the work. So, we got to do this work and then move this pack over there and then we can begin today's work. Sometimes it's like that. Now, we're actually way over into the afternoon and we even took a mid-after afternoon break cuz it's kind of hot. So, another thing I might mention, somebody had said before, probably going to have to insulate that wall over there cuz the evening sun from the west side of the building gets really hot. Might get a price from a spray foam company or something to come in there and do that. We'll figure that out in the future. But it does get hot over there. Ain't no doubt about it. It >> does.
>> While we're doing that, you guys can go and watch right now where we were at this morning. We went over and got a load. We got two loads of logs this morning. Had another uh situation where you know what? If you have a sawmill, I'm telling you now, you should just be friends with all of your local land clearing people.
>> Definitely.
>> Cuz I got a call and he was like, "I got some pine logs. Do you want them?" I was like, "Depends." And he was like, "Well, they're good, straight, and slick." I was like, "Then yes, I do." So anyway, funny story. Went over there, got two loads of logs. One log was huge. I actually had to unload it off of the gooseseneck trailer by dragging it off the back. And that's the first time I've ever had to do that. Um, it was like a probably 14t log, maybe a little over 36 in. It was a whopper, but it didn't have any knots. So, I was like, it's going to make some beautiful lumber. So, let me get a short clip cut in here of when we were out there doing that job and then we'll catch you back over here. Out here getting another load of land clearing logs. Check out the tight rings on the end of these guys. And check out that huge loading machine right there or excavator.
Perfect.
Pretty much loaded. We're going to put like one more right in here. Maybe one right on top. We'll have a whole load of logs out of here.
Opening up a big house pad through here.
It's crazy to me how easy that big machine moves logs compared to my small excavator, which obviously is very much bigger.
But it's just cool to see the power of such a large machine. I can't remember how much he said that PC210 way, but it it's on up there. Maybe in the 40s.
It also tracks really fast back and forth. I like see like how that the movement is on that particular machine.
You're limited with that big bucket to how tight you can get in there amongst these logs. So, that bucket is huge.
easing it in till it falls into place.
That's a really nice sack of lumber.
Now we've got two nice stacks of lumber that are going to be going in that kon very very soon.
>> And back here to a relatively clean sawmill. We got all those stickers cut up and we got a little bit of stuff to take over there in edge. stickers ended up in the barrel over here. So, now we can finally get to the point. Hope you guys enjoyed seeing those logs. That was a big excavator. It's kind of crazy how it would move those big trees. What is funny is is that big excavator made those trees seem a lot smaller than they were cuz it loaded that log and I thought, "Yeah, I get that unloaded no problem." Right. That real big one this morning was something else. I don't know if I got a I don't think I got a video of that. The big log by no means, but I got the >> busy getting it off. Yes, I do have video of us getting some of the smaller ones in the second load. I'll get Britney to take you over there, maybe show you that one real big log. I, however, am going to go get on the excavator and I'm going to go get a siding log to use on the kiln building.
Let's go get some siding cut. We'll hop on the side and I'll take you over here and show you that massive log while Tyler's headed with the excavator to pick up a log for the siding.
>> Let's go see where he dropped it off at.
I think it's right around here.
There it is. Right here.
Check out that massive log.
And it just been taken down. So, it was super fresh and I'm sure full of moisture. So, that made it even more heavy.
But you can tell how big it is right here.
Look at it compared to these other logs.
It's a monster. Looks like he's grabbed us a log and headed to the easy boardwalk. I guess we should probably get over there and help him saw some of this lumber up. And also, I wanted to tell you guys that we do have a new merchandise store. Uh, it just went up a few days ago now as when this video comes out, but it's got a lot of neat new items on there. I'm getting an order in pretty soon, so we'll be wearing some on the channel. The sun is super super bright today, guys. But I just want to let you guys know that we do have a new merchandise store. It is a dashery store. So, you can see all of our new things on there. We have some really cute little stickers, some uh brand new t-shirts, new designs, things like that.
So, go check it out if you would like to look at all that stuff.
Well, it's time, guys. We're about to test out the Boardwalk 40. This will be the biggest log on video we've saw yet.
This is not the biggest log we've saw on the 40 cuz when we first got it, we tested it out on some 8ft stuff that was about 28 in. Did really well. This, however, is a over 20in logs. actually a 22 in at the butt and it's 12t long. So board footage wise, this may be the biggest log on here yet. Let's see what the chain turner does with this big boy.
It's real smooth, so I imagine it's going to turn it really well. Let's get it into a position we feel like is the best. And we're going to saw some siding. I'm looking for 3/4 material.
I'm going to saw at 3/4 on the actual scale and ignore the curve. It will be slightly less than 3/4. We are going to do board and batten. So, I'm going to try to get some 12-in wide material out of here. Before we get too far into today's video, I'd like to take this time to thank today's video sponsor, Brooklyn Bedding. If you guys don't know, let me go ahead and tell you a little something right here. One of the most important things about working at a farm and a sawmill is very, very important that you get a good night's rest. Some of these days are long and hard and you got to have a good night's rest. And that's where today's video sponsor comes in. As you can see behind you here, we have a nice cedar base that I built, I don't know, probably about nearly 3 years ago. And it's been holding a mattress that Aiden has just not been very happy with. So, we decided to go ahead and get him an upgrade. The best part about all this is that Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are designed, assembled, and shipped from their Arizona factory. All their mattresses are designed in Arizona by master craftsmen who've been building mattresses for over 25 plus years. With your Brooklyn Bedding mattress, you get a 120 night sleep trial along with a limited lifetime warranty so you can rest easy. To find the perfect mattress for you, all you have to do is go to the website. I'll leave a link down in the description below. Take a quiz, find the perfect mattress for you, and get it shipped directly to your house. Another nice thing about Brooklyn Bedding is the free shipping, and it comes in a box, so you don't have to worry about getting it upstairs. Like, that's the problem that we have. Brooklyn Bedding makes their own foam, so you get premium Copper Flex comfort at true factory direct pricing.
So, if you're looking for a good night's sleep at an affordable price, tell them what they have to do. Aiden, visit brooklandbedding.com/wallisfarm and use our discount code Wallace Farm to get 30% off of your order.
Well, I would say it will turn it quite easily because that was pretty quick.
Got it in a position that I like. Now, let's solve it.
Heat up here.
Heat up here.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat up here.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat up here.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat up here.
So, we now have a 12 in can. Tyler's going to take this all the way to the bottom. Let's check it out.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Well, we ended up with 16 there and got a few in the edging. We are going to go, however, go eat dinner and then we'll be back and uh tinker with this a little bit later. So, it's the next day and we are out here about to get this building wrapped. We cut that siding yesterday evening. Looks like it's time to take some of this wrap, wrap the building in, and start installing some siding.
So, check it out. Here we got most of the wrapping done, especially here on the back. It's fully done. So, we're going to go ahead and start putting the boards on the back at first. Got it all on the side. Got the two little triangles on each side of the top that we got to do in. But we're going to start with the back. Tyler's over there now on the bulite. Going to pick up some of the siding that we cut yesterday.
And if you guys thought we were joking about using the jacker for the entire build, yeah, it's actually really handy.
So, we're going to fire this thing up right here. Get this cut. We are going to first do the southern wall. Every single board has to be 66 and 1/4 in.
So, we are going to go ahead right now and cut every one of them and then screw them up. And when I say screw them up, I hope that doesn't mean sawing them to the incorrect length. I hope that means literally screwing the correct length board to the building.
Got the boards all cut to length. Now it's time to get them hung up there.
They're really pretty boards, too.
>> Yeah, it's going to look really good, I think.
>> I think so, too. In the long run, I think this building in particular, I'm just going to go ahead and stain. I think it would look really good stained once everything gets trimmed and all the battens are in place.
Tyler is putting the last screws in now.
Check out that back wall.
That is some really nice lumber.
It looks really pretty, doesn't it?
>> It does. I like it a lot.
>> I think that going with pine wood siding for this building was a good sturdy option for it. So, this back wall is done. All that's left to do on it are the battens. Well, this is how far we have got with the first lo the first log. Uh we still got to go over there and edge the boards from the side cuts, but we are all the way around the back, all the way around the side. We got one last trim piece to put in before the corner. And then we got up here and we got five boards of the front here already done. So what it's going to be here is there's going to be two opening doors that will meet in the middle and then you can inset a 12t lumber here.
You technically could put like a 14 ft lumber inside of here, but we made it so that we could get 12t lumber in there easily. So, it's like 13 and 3/4, I think, uh, of a foot that you could get between there. So, anyway, that's where we're at. We have the back wall left to do and that little section. And then, of course, lots of trim out. And I'm going to get my buddy who does roof flashing, trimming, and all that. We're going to get him to come over here and see about doing something to go along that edge there to trim and cap that out. Maybe with some kind of metal work. I'm not sure what we're going to do just there yet, but something to keep the rain from trying to get over inside of there and to close that end, but it's coming along nicely. What do you think, Brit?
>> It really is. I had it pictured of like what I thought it was going to look like in my mind, and this is really blown it out of the water. It looks a lot better than I ever expected it to. Last board going up.
>> It will be fully sided once I put this on there. Nothing but trim work left to do.
>> This thing got dark on us. We have worked the sun away, guys.
>> It feels good outside right now, though.
>> That is true.
>> The bulma light is giving us light back here.
It's helping us out.
One screw to go. It's fully sided. Needs trim work after that.
There should be.
>> We got all of the siding up. We're going to dark.
>> It is a It's dark, completely dark, but it's fully sided. Technically, there's two more little siding pieces there that need to be done. Then it's all trim work, but I'm going to call it fully sided and it's hard to see cuz we're working by the lights. And we are completely done. Good 10 hours out here getting this thing all wrapped up, cut.
We had to edge some pieces. when you're cutting and doing it and installing it all yourself, it can kind of take some time. So, I think I'm going to wait to conclude it to morning when we have better light. But, this is getting towards the end of this video cuz it's towards the end of the day. This thing's looking good. And uh our first video we did with uh showing the solar system that we're going to be using inside of here to run our fans and uh all of our electrical components in here. Didn't get a lot done in there that I wanted to, but you won't be able to say that about this one. There's a light because this particular video is about 80% of the construction is going to be done on this thing. The next video and this I'm fighting the light. The next video is going to be more so on the insulation, ceiling, trim work, all that kind of stuff. So, catch you back in the morning. I'll show you what it looks like and then we'll end it up. Well, last night I wasn't able to get you guys all the way around here. So, let me show you what we got going on. I got to get in here. We got all of it wrapped. So, we got trim this corner out. Trim that corner out. And then we have got to put our batten strips, of course. So, what's left or at the next step of the kiln build is going to be figuring out the door installation. And then after that, we're going to go inside and start to seal everything up and use the insulation to uh make it uh even better.
So, we'll get the insulation done on the inside of here. And that will help hold all the heat inside of the building. And uh I think it's already working. Brick.
It's kind of hot inside here.
>> So, too. It's very hot in here.
>> It is very hot in here. This stuff right here gets pretty warm. Also taller than you think cuz I had to reach really high up there. That angle, it goes up there fast. So, guys, this video has I feel like got a lot done on the kiln build. I feel like if we do a video on building the door and the trim out, then some insulation. I don't know how much we can get done in the next video, but I would say one to two videos in two or three days from now.
>> Hopefully, we'll be done.
>> Yes. I really feel like we can get this thing knocked out. And then the most important video I feel like is going to be when you see us sliding in here and dropping off the first piece.
>> We're going to be so excited.
>> Yes. And then seeing how it's going to go. Matter of fact, it's reminding me right now, Britney, remind me later. We have got to order us. They have some temperature greenhouse temperature gauges that will like Bluetooth to your phone and will keep your temperatures and all that. So, we want to regulate everything. I want to be able to watch it and monitor it is what I'm saying.
So, that's going to do it for today's video. They can find more from us at >> over on our Patreon page. We also have a Facebook and an Instagram page. And we got the new merchandise. So, go check it out.
>> All those things Britney just mentioned will be in links in the description below. Thank you guys so much for watching this one. Till next time, >> see you.
