Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory (1957) presents a powerful anti-war statement by exposing how military bureaucracy and command decisions can lead to the execution of soldiers for political reasons rather than military necessity, demonstrating that the true enemy in war may be one's own superiors rather than the opposing forces.

Paths Of Glory (1957) | One Of The Greatest World War1 Film Ever Made 4K UHDAjouté :
Kubri's Paths of Glory isn't just a war movie. It's a clinical dissection of a murder. While many films in the genre focus on the heroism of the foxhole, Kubri turns his lens upward toward the mahogany panled Shadows, where the real casualties are decided over glasses of Cognac. Set in the trenches of World War I, the story follows General Miro George Machade, a man whose ambition has completely swallowed his humanity. He orders a French regiment to take a heavily fortified German position, the Ant Hill. Knowing full well the mission is impossible. When the attack predictably fails, Miro is incensed. To save face and teach the men a lesson, he demands that three soldiers be chosen by lot to be executed for cowardice.
>> We don't want to slaughter the French army. All we want to do is to set an example. Kirk Douglas delivers a career-defining performance as Colonel Dax, the men's commander and a former criminal lawyer who steps up to defend them in a kangaroo court that is rigged before it even begins. Paths of Glory remains one of the most powerful anti-war statements ever put to film. It doesn't rely on gore to make its point.
It relies on the cold, hard logic of bureaucracy and the terrifying realization that sometimes the enemy isn't the one in the opposite trench. It is the one wearing the same uniform, but with more stars on their shoulder.
