Breaking Down "It Is Well" Chords On Piano

I'm going to play the MIDI file this time and I'm going to break down the chords and the progressions that I did. It's in C. Um, so let's give it a play. Um, it's kind of an intermediate uh type of breakdown. So, let's get right into it.

[00:03:46]Here I'm on ridiculous and so I need to rewind. Let's take it section by section. I kind of improvised this intro here. Let me see.

[00:04:00]So I did um uh well the chord is right there.

[00:04:21]So let me take off the blue stuff. Uh and I need to press stop. Right. [music] So what is this chord? It's a very big um it's a B flat sus chord. Um now we're in the key of C and you're seeing all these flats here, right? So I improvised this um in the key of E flat right before we go into the key of C. Okay. So this is uh an easy way to see it is it's a four over five. If you're in the key of E flat, A flat is the four chord. B flat is the five. All right. But the real chord name is is this which is a B flat um I guess a dominant sus chord.

[00:05:06]And then we got the 13. Okay. All the way up here on the G. All right. So, it's like a A flat major 7 over B flat.

[00:05:15]Okay. That's how I would name this chord. Uh but really because we have an E [music] flat, it's a sus chord, right?

[00:05:20]And the A flat is a dominant 7. And then we hit this is a nine, right? In in in terms of B flat. B flat to B flat is eight. So C would be a nine. We're repeating the sus with the E flat. And then in terms of B flat, G is a 13. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 13 if you're in uh the E flat scale. B flat to G is 13. So it's like a B flat sus 13. Okay, that's what I would say. All right, very big chord. But the essential chord is it's an A flat major 7th over B flat. [music] And then I stack the G in my left hand here. See this G here on the A flat major 7th? I put it down here beside the A flat to create a really crunchy sound. And then I I did a leading tone here or walking tones like I'm in the uh key of E flat from the G is 3 3 4 5 right okay so that's what that chord is very beautiful chord then where did I go after that so what is that chord where you could see it therea so I did and to clear the the blue. Um, so I I did something like this. And what is this chord? Well, it's a it's really an F minor chord really, right? And in the key of E flat, an F minor is a two chord.

[00:06:56]But I also added a G for more tension.

[00:06:59]So I added like a F minor. [music] So like a add N or add two. All right.

[00:07:04]So F minor with the G, but I spread the chord out. So you could see it as I moved the G up here like this. Okay. But then I also had the A flat down here. So when we repeat notes in a chord, that's called chord stacking. Okay? And so da da da da da da da da. So I did something like this.

[00:07:29]Now you could choose how much you want to um how much notes you want to put in the chord, right? Which is called voicing. So I just did that.

[00:07:41]I forgot the melody line. Da da da da.

[00:07:45]And then Okay. So All right. So, I I'm just realizing I have to stop the track every time, but that's okay.

[00:08:11]And then I did da da da.

[00:08:17]So, what is this chord? This is a F minor over G.

[00:08:22]Okay, that's what I did there. Okay.

[00:08:28]All right. Um, so let me see if I can see the time stamp then to make this easier.

[00:09:10]So um so after this chord F minor over G which is a four minor over five da and then I played this D here. Okay I started there and I think I I appreciated the C chord.

[00:09:31]Right. So you know this is a C C chord [music] is C E G right. Oops. I have to keep stopping to clear the blues. So, okay.

[00:09:42]And then I did a walk up from the C, right? I think that's what I did.

[00:10:07]Okay. So, we're at 15 seconds. So, da da da da.

[00:10:13]Okay. [music] This is like an F major over G, but I have the G on the top. So, I had to play AC CG in my right hand, G and F [music] in my left hand. All right. And the real name of this chord is like a G um [music] it's a G susp cuz the C is 4 1 2 3 4. Anytime you have a fourth in a chord, it's a sus chord. And then we have the dominant. So it's like a sus dominant [music] chord. Okay? Or you would say a nine sus because you have the A, right? So for those of you who are new, G to G is 8. G to A is nine.

[00:10:51]Okay? 10 and [music] four is C, which is 11, right? 1 2 3 4 is a C. That's a perfect fourth. We call that a sus chord. Okay? And then 5 [music] 6 7 8 9 10 11. So four is just and 11 are the same. 11 is just eight steps [music] higher than four. Okay, but that's the chord. Da da da da. Okay, I think we're at 15 seconds, right?

[00:11:28]Okay. And then okay and that so after this G9 sus right it's a suspended chord it wants to resolve the C wants to resolve to a B [music] [music] right to a G basically a G dominant so a sus chord sometimes resolves to [music] a G a dominant chord right like this okay like [music] so Right.

[00:11:58]So, da da da da da da da da da [music and singing] da da.

[00:12:12]Okay, very nice. Let's play the rest of it. We're at 15 seconds.

[00:12:18][music] So, that's I just did very basic chords here. We're at 20 seconds. Uh, a C chord. And then the melody F I'm going to harmonize with a D minor which is a two chord. So because the melody is da So we want to harmonize that melody with diietonic chords. [music] Okay. I'm playing with two hands. You can play with one hand. [music] Sometimes I like to play with two hands.

[00:12:58]Okay. So, we were at 20 seconds, right?

[00:13:02]Um, let's play from 18 and then I did.

[00:13:08]So, okay, that's a go walk down. Let's Let's clear it.

[00:13:16][music] Okay. So, it's a 432 progression, right?

[00:13:20]And it's mimicking the melody. Da da da.

[00:13:23]The melody is going D E F right 2 3 4.

[00:13:27]So it's like contrary movement. Okay.

[00:13:30]And to harmonize that movement, contrary movement because this is going up, bass is going down. So melody goes up, bass goes down. Da da da. Very common in gospel. And this is um over the F. Um this is basically an F diminished chord. Okay, F diminished 7th. I didn't play the A flat though.

[00:13:51]Okay. So, I just did this.

[00:13:54]All right. And then when we played the two E, I'm playing an E diminished 7th as well, but I believe I just played So, here's the E diminish 7th inverted with the melody on top. And I took out the B flat, I believe, and I kept the E and the C sharp in the left hand. So the movement was da and this movement is going into a basically a two uh diminished sorry a two minor 7th which is a D minor 7th da.

[00:14:26]So I play like a a D minor 7th is basically an F major chord over D right but I inverted because the F here we want on the top for the melody. Da da da repeats a river attend right.
