A professional automotive technician demonstrates a systematic diagnostic approach for a 2017 Ford F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L, identifying a 4WD engagement actuator issue where vacuum line failure causes metallic clinking sounds, and investigating belt noise from loose mounting bolts, while also noting potential coolant and oil leaks requiring UV dye inspection for accurate diagnosis.

2017 F150 check out for noise and safety check upAdded:
All right, we've got a very nice EcoBoost 35 F-150 here. Um, fairly common issue. I believe we've got it narrowed down to the four-wheel drive engagement actuators. There is a vacuum line right there. And as the engine starts, it pulls the engagement um gear. It's not technically a gear, but the vacuum holds it disengaged.
Otherwise, you run down the road and the axle's turning all the time. Now, you saw it turn there because we don't have any vacuum. There is a technical service bulletin that under certain conditions, the vacuum bleeds off and it'll let this chatter, ratchet, or have a metallic clinking sound. Um, so I believe I've got it narrowed down to there. We'll have to get that part from Ford. Um, we do have some play in both lower ball joints.
Got some really nice tires on here. I don't want it to eat the tires up. We're getting ready to investigate the belt noise.
I think it'll come through in the camera. I don't know who worked on this last, but that plate, those bolts are actually loose. You can kind of see a gap between each one of them. And I think that that's possibly what caused our belt noise is coolant leaking down.
you can see a little bit of debris um or residue if you will from the coolant or the ad pack in the coolant. Um so we're going to take a look at that a little closer and obviously tighten those bolts up. But something I just wanted to notate while we were in here. Um it's fairly dry with the exception of a significant leak on this side of the engine. Now it's leaked everywhere kind of.
So I need to degrease it.
and actually find out where all that's coming from. Um, not a necessity, not why it's here, but something I wanted to notate that, hey, we've got something going on with this oil leak. In my opinion, the proper way is to clean all this up, add a UV dye additive and um you know run it and check it with the UV die and the orange very nice glasses so we can make sure we make the right mechan so we can make sure and make the right recommendations.
Um but that's where I'm at on that oil leak. I don't know whether the customer knew this or not. We did check um the transmission fluid. It at this point looks pretty good. These 10 speeds, this is a 10-speed in here. They do have some inherent quote unquote flaws. They have an issue with a bushing that moves in one of the the uh the drums and loses pressure and then the uh I believe the lead frame on these or lead frame, however you want to pronounce it, causes issues. However, at this point in time, I've not experienced any of that. So, I would like to leave this alone. Like I said, we did check the fluid. It is full, and it does look like it's been serviced, so I'm not super concerned with that. We did go ahead and inspect the transfer case and both differentials. You know, they I don't know that they've been changed, but the fluid looks pretty good on it.
So, this is what I see with the 17 uh F-150 at this point. We're going to investigate the uh the belt noise a little bit further, tighten up those bolts, and then I'll uh give you a call, and we'll go from there.
