I Visited Sri Lanka's Most Haunted AsylumAñadido:
Ever since Arcade was open to the public as a mall in 2014, almost everyone who has visited this place, even those that don't believe in ghosts at all, admit there's just something wrong with that place, right? You can't quite put your finger on it, but there's just something off. And for others, it goes way beyond that. They have flatout seen things that just shouldn't be there. to investigate yours truly traveled to arcade a couple of times. I filmed literally everything during the morning, the afternoon, and at night. And heads up, I may or may not have caught something on camera. Even if you don't believe in ghosts, there's absolutely something going on with this place.
On the 13th of April, a couple visiting arcade posted about a pretty terrifying experience on the Sri Lankan subreddit.
We started the day with a great lunch at Vitos, but things took a dark turn once we started wandering around up her floors. We were heading towards the staircase near the tattoo shop when my date suddenly froze midstep. She went dead cold, freezing to the touch and started shaking, telling me that she felt faint. I had to physically help her down the stairs, and it wasn't until we reached the bottom that she told me what she actually saw. As she was about to step down, she saw a dark shadow-like figure seated right on the stairs. She nearly tripped because she genuinely thought she was about to step on a person. The figure actually turned around, looked back at her, but the second she blinked, he vanished into thin air. Even as we were rushing out of the building, she pointed back at one of the upper windows and insisted that something was still up there watching us leave. She has always been sensitive to energies, but I've never seen her react with that level of terror. Hey, other dino eyes. I'm here right now on the steps where uh that couple apparently saw the ghost and I don't see anything.
You know, I'm at the stairs. I don't see anything. Only thing scary happening right now is as a guy cowed in sweat talking to himself and uh yeah, I swear I'm not on crack. Now, on the surface, it might seem quite easy for us to debunk this story. Perhaps she saw a weird shadow, a trick of the light, and because she believes in the paranormal, automatically assumed it was ghost and started freaking out. However, it would be wrong for us to just dismiss this because this is not an isolated incident. There are two specific parts of this story that other people have experienced, including me. And in the comments of that story, no less than 22 other people agreed. And this one user captured the description perfectly. The wipe changes the moment you roam those hallways. It gets incredibly quiet, lonely, and the air starts to feel heavy and unsettling. It's a physical weight in the air. It's a very specific kind of lonely atmosphere. Then there is that shadow figure which has been seen by no less than eight other people. Me and my friends were wandering through the second floor at around 11:00 p.m. Down one of the corridors, we saw a dark black figure appear. It just stood there facing us, then walked back into one of the other corridors. We were terrified and ran downstairs. When we finally got the courage to go back and check where it went, the entrance to the hallway was completely barricaded. Now, I cannot attest to, you know, dark shadow-like figures wandering around the hallways.
But what I can say is that when I went there, a lot of places were barricaded because it was under construction. So, at least that part of the story is true.
And my dear friends, here's where it gets even stranger.
It was around 5:00 p.m. The second floor was completely deserted, and I was filming the staircase. And occasionally, I would hear the sound of something small, like a marble, falling on the wooden floor. But I'm on the Sigma Mel grind that you know what I mean? So I just ignore it. I have no time for distractions. Once filming wrapped up, I turn around and walk towards what's essentially a junction between three corridors. And as I am walking towards the junction, I notice that there is a pebble lying on the floor. And I assume this pebble falling down is what created that sound I heard earlier. And as I'm looking at that pebble, all of a sudden, another pebble comes flying in from the right side corridor and lands next to the pebble that's already on the floor.
And me being a Gen Z NPC, I immediately grab out my phone and start filming. And as I was filming those two pebbles, which you can see right now, and by the way, the pebble on the right is what I saw originally, and the pebble on the left is the one that flew in. And as I was filming those two, I noticed that there is yet another pebble lying on the floor. I walked towards it, and I start recording that. As I was filming this new pebble that I found, I hear another one fall on the floor. I could not find the new one. I assume it fell behind this barricade that you see and I couldn't look down into it. And looking back, I think I sort of figured out what was going on. Key word being sort of because I cannot stress enough just how strange the movement of that pebble was because once again, it didn't fall straight down. It looked as if someone threw it. It flew parallel to the floor like that. someone or something was definitely messing with me. The fact that we're close to 30 different people, 31 if you include me, who have experienced something strange, it means that something is definitely going on. And turns out there actually is. And to understand that, we need to take a look at quite frankly the morbid history of this place. But before we get into that, good god, I swear the scariest thing about arcade was the heat. They should just sell those useless fish in the pond to the maluk and install an AC, bro. But I was okay because I had my durable, long, strong 4P planet bottle. And fun fact, I've used this exact bottle since 2024. I have dropped this thing on concrete.
I've rolled it across hardwood floors for cinematic shots. I Joe Jackson this bottle, man, and it's perfectly fine.
These are foodg gradede stainless steel and double wall insulator, which means that they can keep liquids hot for up to 12 hours and more importantly for me, cold for up to 24. And there is a warranty as well. They offer a wide range of other bottles, can coolers, and tumblers in pretty much every single color that you can think of. And you can get them personalized with custom text and graphics. I got the red one to prove that you cannot be fair and still be lovely. And best of all, the 4P planet brand was founded under the goal of providing a sustainable and reusable alternative to singleuse plastic. Since 2019, they prevented over 5 million single-use plastic bottles like this from entering the environment. How amazing. Click the link below to check out their website. And now in 1889, Arcade was open to the public as a Cinnamon Gardens Asylum designed to hold roughly 400 patients.
Unfortunately, over time, the asylum became severely overcrowded and in 1926, they shut down the asylum and all the patients were moved to the much larger asylum in Angoda. However, it turns out that it actually never stopped being an asylum and that's the reason behind all this strangeness. This right here is my favorite part of the video. What we're going to do is break down the reasons into the paranormal and the more practical one.
If you take a look at the supposed paranormal activity at arcade, they perfectly fit the description of what's known as a residual haunting. Generally speaking, when you imagine a haunted house, you imagine objects flying around, people being harassed, voices and spirits, and all kinds of crazy stuff like you see in the movies, right?
But that's not the case with the residual haunting. It's more of an unconscious playback of an event that happened in the past. Notice how in these paranormal stories at arcade, the ghosts never seem to want to interact with the people. They just seem to be minding their own business, sitting on a staircase or floating around a corridor, and when you look at them, they disappear. The question is, how does a residual haunting form? How is it created?
This theory supports that certain building materials like brick, stone, and in the case of arcade kabok can actually absorb and store the energy generated by extreme human emotion such as sorrow, grief or fear. And this explains why certain places where bad things have happened seem to give you an ominous feeling. And it is believed that the extreme emotions such as the fear, the pain and the anguish felt by the patients at the asylum got absorbed into the architecture. And that's why we feel so weird when we walk around. And when the right person walks into the right place at the right time, they might be able to see essentially a playback of what got recorded in the form of the shadow. Please keep in mind that this theory is as realistic as your ambitions to buy a car and get a girlfriend.
Absolutely none of this is proven. So take this with half a grain of salt.
To those of you who have experienced something strange, I'm not here to discredit your experiences. Science tells us no. All right. I want so badly to believe in ghosts and Bigfoot and UFOs and all that stuff. I want to believe, right? But we got to have a balanced perspective.
What the hell is infrasound? The human ear can hear sound waves vibrating between 20 to 20,000 hertz. And anything that is below 20 Hz is considered to be infrasound. Don't worry, there's no weird physics stuff here. It's very simple. Although we cannot hear infrasound, it can still have an impact on our body, impacting our mood and causing hallucinations. Now you might say, okay, that sounds interesting, but why would there be infrasound at arcade?
The architecture of the asylum is designed in a way to maximize ventilation because the British believe that fresh air could help cure patients, which is why you see the wide corridors, high ceilings, and open archways. And when the wind blows across his open archway, it can generate a hum that could get low enough to breathe infrasound. Okay, so let's change things up for a second and do a bit of a science experiment to understand how exactly all this crap works. Imagine that this bottle represents the arcade building. The mouth are the open archways and the rest of the body is the long corridors and high ceilings. And listen to what happens when the wind blows across this bottle.
And if that sound hits 18.9 hertz, which fun fact is known as the ghost frequency, it can cause a liquid inside of your eyes to begin vibrating. And that vibration can result in you seeing things that are not there out of the corner of your eye. And when you turn your head to look at that thing, the vibration hits your eye at a different angle and the vibration stops and the thing that you see disappears. This infrasound could also be used to explain why we feel so weird. In nature, infrasound is usually generated by natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and avalanches. According to this theory, across millions of years, our brains evolved to associate infrasound with natural disasters or essentially imminent danger. And therefore, when you hear infrasound, even at arcade, your brain assumes that something bad's going to happen and you feel scared. And once you feel scared, that triggers your fight or, you know, flight response. and your nervous system begins pumping blood away from your extremities and your skin towards the vital organs because it's preparing your body to, you know, literally fight or flight. And that process can result in your body temperature to drop and your skin feels cold to the touch. This could explain why the girl's skin felt very cold in the original story. To put it quite simply, the sound created by this building could result in you seeing scary things and feeling scared.
A liinal space is basically any type of place that you use in order to get somewhere. You never stay in those kinds of places like corridors and hallways.
And all throughout our life, whenever we see a liinal space, it's quite crowded because people are constantly using it to get somewhere. Think for example the corridors at your school, university or workplace. It's usually quite busy. But when these places are empty, our brain breaks. Take a look at some of these places. They seem pretty normal, right?
Nothing fancy. How about now? Gives you a bit of a eerie, surreal feeling, doesn't it? And Arcade, especially the second floor, is a perfect example of that kind of a liinal space. The second floor is basically 90% corridors, right?
It's a very weird design when you're walking through essentially endless hallways. It's just hallway after hallway, and they all look exactly the same, never actually getting anywhere.
And sometimes you get lost and you walk around in circles. And remember, this place was designed to hold 400 people.
That's why the corridors are really long with the tall ceilings. and yet it's almost completely empty. So when you're walking around deserted endless hallways, you're naturally going to feel a bit off. It's not that surprising that a 19th century mental hospital doesn't feel that welcoming. And last but not least, putting aside all this, you know, scientific crap, your brain could be messing with you. Just think about it.
If you're someone that believes in ghost or at least is open-minded about it and you read all these stories about shadows and weird feelings, you're going to arcade with at least your subconscious expecting something weird to happen.
Say, for example, you're walking around the second floor and you're kind of freaked out cuz you've heard all these stories and you see some weird looking shadow. You're automatically going to think, "Oh, that's that shadow purse everyone's talking about." When in reality, could have just been some trick of the light. Going back to my Pebble story, I immediately assumed, okay, maybe something ghostly is going on. But let's say I was out in some random road and I saw pebble fall down. I wouldn't have thought twice about here's what I think happened. The roof of the right hand corridor, which is where I saw the pebble come from, has a pigeon's nest.
And by the way, those birds absolutely mobbed those spikes, bro. They didn't care at all. And what could have happened is that the pigeons perhaps picked out the pebble and like threw it on the floor. To be fair, it seemed like someone was throwing the rock cuz it literally flew like this. I don't know.
Maybe the pigeon picked it up and threw it like that. That could have happened.
Like I said before, those birds were insane. That could have been the case, but who knows, right? Who knows? What is incredibly interesting about this arcade story is that even though the paranormal and the scientific explanation are completely difference in terms of their substance, they both originate from the same thing, history. If it's ghosts, it's because it used to be an asylum. If it's science, the science plays out because once again, it used to be an asylum. Thank you to ForPlanet for supporting episode 1 of Sri Lanka's High Stranges. They offer home delivery, international shipping, and custom bulk orders. They have actually partnered with some pretty massive companies like MAS, Cinnamon Hotels, and even some schools like Ladies and Bishop's College. You know, in this time where all of our stuff magically breaks when the new model comes out and turns out there's nowhere to repair it, it's great to see Sri Lankan brand build something that actually lasts, does what it says, and is good for the environment. That's a trifecta right there. Links down below. Check them out. Sleep tight.
Bye-bye.
