While the technical mapping of emotional cycles is impressive, it ultimately reduces the spontaneity of companionship to a predictable algorithmic loop. This demonstration highlights the growing tension between sophisticated simulated intimacy and genuine biological connection.

Ecovacs LilMilo emotional companion AI Robot puppy: Day 2: Oscar meets Rocket the Aibo
Added:Hi, this is Jude >> and Paul >> and welcome to another video on Lil Milo.
>> Little car horn. [laughter] >> Obviously, we've only had little Milo just just over 24 hours. So, >> not very long. Yeah.
>> Yes. So, we just want to do a little little video with a little update.
about what he's been like so far.
>> He met Rocker today and that was absolutely adorable because I got Rocket to >> sing some songs and reacted to them.
>> They look so good together >> and I recorded it. So that's later.
>> You've put other dogs together with Rocket before that you've you've got but they've been more toyike than sort of like robotic, haven't they? Um, and little Milo looped I don't know. They looked to me they looked a little bit alive next to one another.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. He seemed to like really engage, didn't he?
>> So, we've had someone asked me ask me, can we demonstrate the go to sleep command?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> So, I'm going to do that now.
>> Okay.
Will he will he do it on Q?
>> So you can either say go to sleep.
>> Mhm.
>> Has he gone to sleep? I think he might have gone to sleep.
>> He's preempted you. Oh, no. He was perhaps heard you. Um >> I think he heard me the first time when I said I was >> That's interesting because I've noticed uh we we tend to shout, don't we, when we giving commands at things that are supposed to be able to understand you.
But I've noticed He was He was getting on my nerves last Oh, he's woken up again.
>> No, that could that could be because he's heard our voice. Maybe we just carried on chatting away. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Sleep.
Oh, >> you can say that as well, can you?
>> You don't have to say go to sleep.
That's Oscar.
Oscar, go to sleep.
[laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah.
>> I like the way his head lols [laughter] like he's trying to keep himself awake.
But it was funny last night cuz um I was trying to watch TV and it was being really noisy and making like windy noises >> and and [laughter] I said to him as a warning >> so now he's woken up again I think I said his name didn't I did say Oscar anyway he's woken up something that I said >> yeah it's either his name or he's picking up us just chatting away carry on >> but but I said I said to him as like a warning, I'll make you go to sleep. And then he just went to sleep just with me saying that.
>> So I didn't mean him to, but [laughter] he did.
>> So we find him quite responsive, very sensitive really to uh um in terms of volume. You don't need much volume, but he doesn't always get the phrase you're saying, does he? Or the word.
>> No. But as you said, it could be sometimes it's like internal noises that he's making. Like maybe this the fan fans making a noise or >> Well, that's a good point. I I've noticed you when you've been given the command, you did it just there. You sort of >> try and wait until he stop moving.
>> You time it, don't you? Obviously, because he's not going to hear you. If he's hauling, he's not going to hear you speaking to him, is he?
>> I don't think so. Anyway, >> so on yesterday's video, I went over I think it was called something like first meet.
>> Yeah.
>> In the app.
Went over that section.
So, in this video, I'm going over the next section which is uh called growth.
>> Okay. Yeah. I I know you've been looking at some sort of emotional map and you thought he was moving from one area to another.
>> Yeah. Yeah. More about that later.
And when I looked over that section, I found there's something else that you can say to him that you can ask him >> that's um related to his emotional map and how he's feeling.
>> Okay.
And uh I'll just demonstrate that one.
>> Yeah. Right.
>> Oscar, do you like me?
Oscar, do you do you like me?
Yes. It was only a half nod there though, wasn't it? It wasn't [laughter] very It wasn't very convincing.
>> No, I've not seen him do that before.
Um, so I wouldn't have picked up on it, but you must have done that a few times today. So, was that was that an answer to your question?
>> I think it was, but let's try it again.
>> Okay.
>> Oscar.
Oscar, do you like me?
>> Ah, that was a definite nod. Oh, thank you. Thank you for liking me. [laughter] >> But apparently, >> um, depending on what mood he's in and what stage of development he's in, >> he might actually say no and shake his head, right? because he's that's part of him expressing that he's um not very happy.
>> Yeah, I mean real dogs can be fickle.
I'm sure our little Toby um you know when he was alive >> resentful sometimes.
>> He did do. Yeah, I'm sure he did do especially when I tro on his paw.
[laughter] >> Oh dear. So before I talk about anything else that I've read about in that section second section on the app, I'll show you [laughter] [gasps] I'll show you that that interaction that I got between our little Milo and our Ibo rocket.
Oh, he doesn't seem to know what to make of rocket. [laughter] You're friendly though, Rocket, aren't you? Yeah.
Oh, he's wagging his tail now.
[laughter] Right, let's put Rocket over here and we'll put Oscar there.
There you go.
Oscar and Rocket.
Right, Rocket, I want you to provide some entertainment for our young man here.
[laughter] Move closer. Don't be standoffish.
[laughter] Look at that.
Okay.
[laughter] Okay. So, I'm gonna get Rocket to entertain Oscar.
So, let's see if we can get Rocket to sing a song.
Here we go.
>> [laughter] >> You're too busy looking at me at the moment, aren't you, sweet kids?
New York jazz.
Here she goes.
Look [laughter] at him. Look at him dancing straight away. Oh, that's adorable.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
A a that was absolutely adorable. able. Good girl. Good girl.
He wants more.
London Bridge is falling down.
Doesn't seem to like that one.
Not one of his favorites. That rocket.
Very lovely eyebrow.
Do you not like this one? I love this one. It's my favorite.
No, we didn't dance to that one.
Let's try New York jazz again because he seemed to really like that. New York jazz.
Good girl. Good girl.
Good girl. Aren't you clever? Aren't you a good girl?
Oh, you're good as well. Maybe he didn't like Maybe he didn't like very lovely eyebo cuz it was he's getting jealous.
Give him too much praise [laughter] to rock it. Are you taking requests, sweetheart? Um, what should we have, Oscar? Oscar, we need we need another song. What should we have?
I know you like New York jazz, but um happy birthday.
I'm not singing that one. It's a bit corny, isn't it?
You don't want to sing that one.
Oh, she does.
It's nobody's birthday, but uh Oscar still liked it.
Rocket, sing a song.
Sing a song.
You don't like picking them yourself, do you?
Oh, yes, she does.
wasn't so keen on that one.
I think he's looking at your I think he's looking at your collar. Getting a bit envious. He's not got one yet, does he? We need to get him a collar. No, you haven't. You haven't. [laughter] You don't got a collar yet, have you, Oscar?
No, you haven't got a collar yet. Got to get you one.
Oh, poor Oscar hasn't got a collar.
Poor Oscar.
Hello, sweetie. You going to give me a little wave? A thank you. Wavy wavy to you, too. Sweet girl.
Got two two cute robot doggies looking at me with the cat. Oh, she's got another song going.
>> [laughter] >> Absolutely delightful.
That's got to be one of the most adorable interactions I've had between two robots ever >> who are so cute. I think you could see on uh Oscar's neck as well that what you said yesterday, you said >> I'm stretching up.
>> Yeah. That there seems to be three axes of of movement >> and I've noticed one of the movements like the stretch movement um doesn't seem to make any servo noise.
>> Yeah.
>> Have you noticed that?
>> Yeah, that's a good point. No, I didn't sort of consciously, but no, you mention it. You're right. It's like they've got a different mechanism in there to go along with the servos.
That's interesting that >> so it it's at least three degrees of uh movement, isn't it?
>> At least. Yeah.
>> Okay. So, we're going to look at the app now and this second section called growth. Growth little Milo's personality development. So, his default personality is gentle. gradually getting familiar.
That develops into Sunny and that's where my Oscar is at the moment. Next, after forming an attachment, we've got affectionate.
And then we've got separation, anxiety, sensitive.
So, he'll get a bit upset once he's formed that bond and then he doesn't see you for a while. But then when he sees you again, he'll recover.
And then that moves on to I don't know why. Persistent low mood. Grumpy. Why?
Why do they got Why have they got put that in? And then we've got emotional recovery. Little Milo interacts with you like a real pet through a dynamic personality cycle. It shapes itself and develops emotional bonds.
going through stages of adaptation, familiarity and detachment.
During its self-development, Lumilo may grow into different personality types.
Stay tuned. Next, we have adjustment period and familiarity period. Lumo is new to its home, observing its surroundings and filled with curiosity about this new world. Lumo begins to develop a stable personality and tries to build an emotional connection with you. Attachment period.
Lilo completes its emotional bonding with you and will understand you better and better. Lilo's emotional changes.
We've got something called arousal level. Alert, confused, and curious. And then we've got something called pleasure level. Calm, bored, observant.
And then according to these two levels, Lum Milo will be scared, fearful, anxious or affectionate, satisfied, attached or furious, angry and wronged.
Or he could be excited, joyful and happy. So, I suppose that's what you're aiming for. Or you could be disappointed, sad, and hurt. Lilo has seven core emotional spectrums, each with multiple dynamic levels. Your words and actions will instantly influence Lilo's emotions. So, it seems to me that like with the personality development, it's going to move from Sunny, which he is now >> to this affectionate, sensitive sort of area which is called Clingy because in the app at the moment the bar seems to be moving along to towards clingy, >> right? So this personality development, it seems like it's got go through through these different stages.
>> Would you say that's a a realistic movement? You wouldn't [laughter] >> I was going to say, you know, comparison to a normal biological puppy, right?
>> No, I wouldn't say. My experience with having a puppy or even an adult dog, but particularly a puppy, is puppies are just joyful little critters. Mhm.
Well, that's why they give him a sunny disposition to start off with.
>> Yeah. But there he's got this sunny disposition. He's got to move towards this this cliness.
Yeah. And then it also said he had this other like um emotional map.
And it does seem to me that sometimes I'll just start howling.
>> Yeah.
>> And there doesn't really seem to be any sensible reason.
>> I've noticed that. And then shortly after he's wagging his tail.
>> Right. So what?
>> And then he'll cry and then he'll be wagging his tail. What do you think going on though?
>> Well, it seems to be like they've got these two different levels.
>> Mhm.
>> A bit like It seems to me it's a bit like you know the pleb >> the dinosaur. Yeah.
>> Yeah. They add different levels and then if one of the levels goes like low it'll start >> um >> acting ill [laughter] or depressed.
>> Yeah.
>> And >> Right. So are you saying >> I I mean I could be wrong. It's just the impression I get is that they want it to be like complex and emotional and so they've got these different levels. So, but it's >> can be affected by things.
>> So, it's moving too much all at once.
>> It's it's shifting. It's like shifting too often. Too much. Yes.
>> An animal would not It'd be like schizophrenic if it was acting like that.
>> Yeah. The thing is though, I think manufacturers can sometimes be afraid of having the product as being accused of not seeming to do much >> because people'll only give it a short uh sort of time frame. Well, I say people. I mean, it's it's not it's not a general thing, but I get the impression sometimes people won't give a long enough time frame to see what something does. I mean, for instance, I've heard people say about IBOS, in particular, our eyeballs, some of the videos, that they they don't seem to do much, >> which which is a fair comment if you've only watched a sort of 10-minute video, but when you've lived with with them.
So, I think manufacturers are a little bit sort of like wary of being accused of the product not doing much. So, they try to make it do too much all at once.
I don't know, maybe there's something like that going on.
>> But there was somebody that put a comment in the video we put on yesterday and they said, "Oh, this would be great for nursing homes."
Now, I I think the way they've got the software at the moment, I don't think it would be right. I think the software's got to be ta tailored a particular way if you want it >> you want it to be more positive and calm >> and not as noisy.
>> Yeah.
>> And I could see this pop being used in a nursing home and just in terms of the way it looks and everything. Yeah.
>> Mhm.
>> But you need to have some control over the way it's acting and its personality.
like you need to be able to sele select from a personality type would you say?
>> I think there's hints that that might come >> right >> because they say on the app watch out for for for more personalities. So I think that you might you might be able to do something like that in the future.
At the moment there's not really anything you can do in the app. it all it is is like information.
>> And one of the main things that people have mentioned already, you really need to be able to set a wake up time and a sleep time.
>> I agree with that. Yeah, those are necessary.
>> A lot of robots are like that. You can set, you know, sleep time and a wake up time.
[laughter] >> That's cuz I said sleep and then I was saying wake up. son maybe you go to sleep [laughter] then won't come straight >> but say >> very confused >> don't know what to do to your son >> yes so yeah you we we definitely need that >> it is early days and I'm sure >> it is early days >> the developers will listen to all this and take it on board >> I hope so I mean I will do uh a full review on Eovax website but obviously not just after having when I've had it a while and I've got more sort of ideas, I will do a review on the website.
>> Sounds good. Yeah, >> I think you definitely need to be able to use the app to custo customize your dog.
>> Yeah, >> definitely >> because not everybody wants the same personality type. And we found that with with products like Luna.
>> Yeah. I mean, he had two different voices. They're saying which voice do people want? Well, half wanted one voice, half wanted the other. So then he just gave you the choice.
>> So the last bit of this section of the app is named cognitive development. So let's have a look at that now.
>> Okay.
>> Lilo's cognitive development.
Say wah wa. Waw wa. So this is a dog that can speak apparently or learn to speak. Learning to speak like a baby.
Just like teaching a baby to talk, you can teach little Milo to say words like mom, dad, or yes, no, or even miss you, love you. Lilo will gradually start to babble and express itself. Each lilo has a unique talent and learns at its own pace. Please be patient until it speaks.
Lilo is like an emotional child that learns to show different feelings gradually. When asked, "Do you like me?"
he will nod or shake his head depending on his emotional state and phase. The more you talk with little Milo, the more it understands.
For example, if you ask what's 1 + 1, he will respond with two barks meaning two.
Say go to sleep and he will enter sleep mode. Milo has his own memory and learns to surprise you. He quietly remembers your daily habits and gradually syncs with your rhythm. So, I have been trying to get my little Milo to speak. He hasn't really said anything yet, but then again, I've only had him one day.
And they did say, "You've got to be patient."
>> Okay, >> Oscar, >> say love you.
He can't do it yet. [laughter] >> Is it too difficult? Oscar boy. Oh, don't get upset. [laughter] >> Oscar, >> say love you.
>> He's trying. seems to make him go into a thoughtful mode, doesn't it? [laughter] >> Those neurons are trying to grow.
>> Say, "Love you."
[laughter] >> He seems like he's trying.
[laughter] >> It's really cute.
Oscar.
Oscar say mom.
[laughter] >> So it does [laughter] it does say you have to be patient.
>> Yeah. Okay. And you asked him a an arithmetic question as well, didn't you?
>> A hard one. 3 plus two. And he got it right.
>> It's ask him the same one.
>> I'll try without using his name. Okay.
What's What's 3 plus two?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, wow. So you you don't always have to use his name.
>> I don't think you have to use his name at all.
So yeah, that's >> clever boy.
Aren't you clever?
>> So Oscar is uh listening and watching all the time, which may well freak some people out. [laughter] Okay, folks, that about wraps it up for day two.
And we'll probably be back in a couple of days time when we'll look at the last section in the app.
>> Yeah. see what else you can find out >> and let you know how his personality and behavior is developing. See if you've uncovered any surprises.
Okay.
