Mary Fields was born into slavery in Tennessee around 1832.

She worked on Mississippi riverboats, then landed at a convent in Ohio as a groundskeeper. When the Bishop of Montana banned her from the mission in 1894, "Too loud, too quarrelsome, too much." She moved to the nearest town and started over. Again, she was 60 years old when the US Postal Service gave her a contract. 34 miles round trip through Montana wilderness, alone. [music] She drove the route for 8 years. When snow buried the road, she strapped the mail sacks to her [music] back and walked on snowshoes. Once wolves surrounded her wagon and knocked it over. She fought them off through [music] the night with her rifle. She never missed a single delivery. Montana passed a law forbidding [music] women in saloons. The mayor of Cascade gave her a personal exemption. [music] The town closed its schools on her birthday. When she died in 1914, her funeral was one of the largest Cascade [music] had ever seen.
