On August 6, 1945, he was in Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb exploded, suffering burns and ruptured eardrums but surviving. Despite his injuries, he boarded a train and returned home to Nagasaki. Three days later, on August 9, 1945, he was in Nagasaki when the second atomic bomb exploded, and he survived again. He spent the rest of his life speaking about the horrors of nuclear weapons to ensure the world never forgot.
