In 480 BC, Persian King Xerxes ordered the construction of massive pontoon bridges across the Hellespont strait to transport his 100,000+ soldier army from Asia to Europe for the invasion of Greece. After initial bridges were destroyed by storms, Xerxes ordered new engineers to design stronger bridges using iron chains anchored to account for water currents, successfully creating two parallel bridges over a mile long that allowed his entire force—including cavalry, war elephants, and supply wagons—to cross in seven continuous days and nights.
