The Railroad Reinforcements at Bull RunHinzugefügt:
The first major Civil War battle was not decided by courage alone. It was shaped by a railroad junction. Manassas Junction connected the Orange and Alexandria Railroad with the Manassas Gap Railroad. That mattered because Joseph Johnston's Confederate force was sitting in the Shenandoah Valley while Beauregard held the Bull Run line.
McDowell needed to hit Beauregard before Johnston could arrive. He did not.
Confederate reinforcements moved toward Manassas by rail, changing the timing on the field and helping stiffen the line around Henry Hill.
The railroad did not win the battle by itself. That would be too neat. But at Bull Run, railroads changed what was possible. The full episode shows why Manassas Junction mattered before the first shot.
