Officials claim the focus is not on ordinary immigrants who followed the rules, but rather on cases involving false documents, fake marriages, identity fraud, or national security concerns. Now, let's move to another critical update affecting immigrants with work permits. A major protection involving employment authorization documents, also known as work permits, has changed. Previously, many immigrants benefited from an automatic extension when renewing their permits. In some situations, the extension could last up to 540 days, giving applicants extra protection while waiting for USCIS processing. But that policy changed for renewal applications submitted on or after October 30th, 2025. This is extremely important because USCIS processing delays continue to be a serious problem in 2026. Some renewal applications are taking more than 6 months to process. Here's the danger. If your work permit expires and you do not qualify for the automatic extension anymore, you could temporarily lose authorization to work legally in the United US. Many people make the mistake of waiting until the last minute to renew their documents. Some don't even realize their permit is about to expire until it's too late. USCIS is now strongly recommending that immigrants submit renewal applications at least 180 days or 6 months before expiration.

There's also an important update for immigrants with pending applications who must attend biometric appointments for fingerprints and photographs. USCIS now allows many people to reschedule biometric appointments online through their USCIS account instead of calling by phone or sending requests through [music] the mail. You cannot reschedule online if your appointment has already been changed two or more times. You also cannot use the online system if your appointment is less than 12 hours away.
