In HVAC systems, a clogged condensate drain line can cause water to accumulate and overflow, potentially damaging ceilings; to prevent this, the float switch must be installed before the trap and adjusted to the lowest possible position to ensure it trips when water reaches a safe level, and the drain pipe should be insulated to prevent condensation and freezing.

Customer said water was pouring through the ceiling… #hvac #hvaclife #refrigerationAdded:
All right, we're on the dreaded "Hey, water's coming through my ceiling" call.
That's a call you never want to get, but I'm going to show you what caused it and how to fix it and stop it in the future with this.
What happened here is this trap got clogged.
There's no float switch here, so it's flooding over the unit. This is going into the pan. Well, the float switch never tripped.
It's right here.
Because it's got a drain hooked up.
Which one thing that we need to do is lower this float switch as far as possible so that it trips in the future.
And we are going to add this float switch before the trap, right off the unit. You don't want to put it after the trap.
But the reason it was flooding over the ceiling was water's just constantly building up inside this unit.
Constantly flooding over, never tripping the float switch, and then it was coming into the plenum.
Once it got inside the plenum, it just ran into the return and right out where the filter was.
Here it is. Got the float switch before the trap.
Got it all taped up. The reason we insulate this is cuz that cold water comes down here on that PVC and it will condensate in the hot summer and drip down on the subfloor or through the ceiling. So, we always insulate these to stop that from happening and it protects it in the wintertime from freezing if there's water in there.
Now we are going to wire up this flow switch. What we're going to do is break one side of this already existing flow switch wire.
And then we're going to take that flow switch off and adjust it as low as possible.
We're going to test it now.
