The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity who indwells believers, providing comfort, guidance, wisdom, and power to live holy lives; on Pentecost Sunday, God sent the Holy Spirit to empower the early church, and this same Spirit continues to transform believers through the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control), enabling them to overcome sin, love others, and witness for Jesus.

This is This Sunday's called Pentecost Sunday, and we are counting on the presence of the Holy Spirit to fill us and give us power to deal with the challenges of each day. Are we not?
Can I hear amen, church?
Absolutely. This is the day God has made, and we belong to a God who is in control of everything. The call to worship, please.
I'm sorry. I think it's not there.
Today, we gather in the same expectation expectation as the disciples in the upper room. We come hungry for God, open to his voice, and ready for his spirit.
On the day of Pentecost, a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the house.
Tongues of fire rest on each one and ordinary people were filled with extraordinary power.
Come, Holy Spirit, breathe on us, ignite us with your fire.
The spirit who moved then is the spirit who moves now.
He still saves. He still sanctifies.
He still empowers.
He still sends.
Come, Holy Spirit, make us your witnesses.
Let us lift our voices, open our hearts, and welcome the presence of God.
For today, the wind still blows, the fire still falls, and the church of God still rises in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Come, Holy Spirit, we worship you.
Let us take a moment to pray, please.
Father, we pray this morning for those who have have given their offering as they came in through the door this morning. Lord, we pray you will bless the and receive the offering that has been received today. We pray that we will not only give of our offerings, but we'll give of our service to you each day, and that we will trust you, Lord, to to help us to grow in your grace and your knowledge. And so, Lord, bless this time of worship. May you empower us with your spirit and help us to deal each lived daily to deal with the challenges of life. Bless the service services today, Lord, and give us your power. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. May remain standing because you're going to be singing.
We're going to sing the found one of the founder's songs.
Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flames, send the fire.
We all know that they were gathered in the upper room uh on that morning and uh wondering what was going to happen.
And Jesus came and stood in the midst of them.
And he breathed on them.
And we know that the spirit of God came into their lives.
And they were sent out to do the work of the kingdom. And I pray today that as we take this in this morning, even though our hearts are are are kind of sad, not kind of but sad, uh you know, um that's what the disciples were like in the uh that room that day till Jesus came. And what did he do? He gave them power.
He gave them strength. He gave them grace.
And he filled their lives with hope. So, we pray today, pray today that as we sing, that the Holy Spirit of God will fall upon us and bless us today as we worship in this place. Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame, send the fire.

Get your mom reading this morning.
Scripture reading this morning is taken from the book of Acts. So, I guess you've already guessed that.
And we're going to be reading from Acts chapter 2 verses 1 to 8, and then from 14 to 21. Acts chapter 2, 1 to 8.
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now, they were staying in Jerusalem, God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
When they heard the sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment because each one heard their own language being spoken.
All three of them asked, "Aren't all these who are Galileans?
Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
And to verse 12 But the 11 raised his voice and addressed the crowd.
Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you.
Listen carefully to what I say.
These people are not drunk as you suppose. It's only 9:00 in the morning.
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.
In the last days, God says, "I will pour out my spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my spirit in these days and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above the signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord may be saved. May God add a >> [music] [music] [music] >> 7:34 in our song book We'll start now because that's Uh precious Jesus over me. I want to know that thou art blessing the first verse and the last verse.
I'm going to invite the congregation to stand.
Glory, glory Glory, glory to the lamb. All the cleansing power has reached me.
Lord, great is thy name. What a wonderful testimony the band played for us. That's Iris' testimony, right?
That was Iris' testimony.
That was this time. You love the service of the Lord. You live that life. And so, in in we're singing this first and the last verse at the close, of course, of that I'll give it to us, please.
Precious Jesus >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Amen.
>> [music] [music] [applause] >> Let us pray together, Father.
We thank you for that wonderful We thank you for your love and your faithfulness to watch over us every day that we live.
Brother Bill opened the word this morning.
I thank you for giving us a heart and an understanding mind.
And Lord, we pray that you will bless us and use us for your glory.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
Thank you, Brother Bill, for that wonderful reading this morning.
Appreciate it.
Today are celebrating a special day. It's called the day of Pentecost. It's Pentecost Sunday in the church calendar.
It was on the day of Pentecost that God sent His Holy Spirit to the early church.
The Bible tells us that the apostles were all gathered in one place when suddenly there was sound like a mighty rushing wind.
They saw what looked like tongues of fire that came to rest upon each of them.
And all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit.
The Enduring Word Commentary provides a very interesting in of scripture.
And I'm quoting now from this Enduring Commentary by David Guzik.
This is what he says about it. The day of Pentecost was a Jewish feast held 50 days after Passover.
It celebrated the first fruits of the wheat harvest.
Which was at that time the first sheaf reaped from the barley harvest was presented to God at Passover.
But at Pentecost, the first fruits of the wheat harvest were presented to God.
Therefore, it is the day of the first fruits according to Numbers 28:26.
Jewish tradition also taught that Pentecost marked the day when the law was given to Israel.
The Jews sometimes called Pentecost the season of giving of the law.
On the Old Testament day of Pentecost, Israel received the law.
And notice this, this is a very important statement I made. On the Old Testament day of Pentecost, Israel [clears throat] received the law. On the New Testament day of the Pentecost, the church received the spirit of grace in fullness.
Amen.
Amen.
It was the best attended of the great feasts because traveling conditions were at their best. There was never a more opportune time to gather in You see, God knew what he was doing.
God knew brought all these different people from different languages See, 15 to 22 gives us Do you remember what I said?
for the celebration of Pentecost.
It says there that two loaves to be waved before the Lord by the priest as part of the celebration.
Were there not two loaves?
Not only shall Israel be saved, but the multitude of the Gentiles shall be turned to the Lord Jesus Christ.
He had it all figured out for us.
And give us what we call the church.
You see, God's Holy Spirit is somewhat like the wind. We can't see it.
We know that he is here because we can see the effects of his power in our lives.
The Holy Spirit is a very important part of our life.
And there are some things we need to keep in mind.
He comes to our lives and he helps us in many ways. For example, the Holy Spirit comforts us when we're sad and alone. Would you agree?
John 15:26 says, "When the When the advocate comes, whom I send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me."
God gives us his Holy Spirit to comfort us when we are sad and alone. He gives us the Holy Spirit to guide us in the way of truth.
First 16:13, the Holy Spirit will help us 27, he he guides us in our choice according to Ezekiel 37:16. He shows us the good things that God has for us. In 1 Corinthians 2:9 and 11, and on and on you can go with all kinds of scripture about what the Holy Spirit can do in our lives.
But I don't want to kind of get bogged down into all these things, but I just want to leave this morning with you three important things.
Our three important truths that I believe are important.
The presence of the Holy Spirit, God within us.
God was in us.
Jesus said, "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper to be with you forever. He is with you and will be in you."
God has blessed Winnie and I with many years of ministry.
We have seen many changes, experienced many obstacles. We have seen some very tragic things.
And I've often sat and thought about it.
How did I do How did I get to that?
Or how did I get to this?
You know, all I can say is by the grace and the power of the Holy Spirit in my life that it The Holy Spirit lives in you. Paul says, "Do you not know that your body is the what? The temple of the Holy Spirit?"
1 Corinthians 6:19. In the Old Testament, God's presence dwelled in the tabernacle and the temple. Now, because of what Christ has finished work, the spirit of the living God lives in us.
Hallelujah.
God gives you new power to live each life each day. The Spirit makes Christ real to us. Jesus said to the that the Spirit would take what is mine and declare it to you.
He opens scripture. He softens our hearts and reveals Christ's beauty.
You Have you ever sat down with scripture like I have?
And I've been studying the scripture for many, many years.
And it's always amazing me. Well, I wish my Bible.
So, I open the Bible. I've been reading this for 70 years. Well, how old am I? I'm not going to tell you how old I am, no.
It doesn't matter.
But, I've been preaching the gospel over 50 years.
I cannot believe that I can still go to the same passage that I read the first time as an officer and find something different in it.
You agree?
It's amazing to me that God's spirit reveals some new truth to me and I go, "How did that happen?"
I didn't think it up.
Wilson didn't come up with that brain idea. I'd have figured it out. But God's spirit spoke to my heart through his word and made me realize I am his and he is mine.
The spirit indwells every believer.
The spirit brings assurance. Romans 8:16 says, "The spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."
If you are Christian this morning, my friend, you belong to the family of God.
Hallelujah.
Will you agree?
You would belong to the family of God.
That's beautiful.
And uh it was like we were yesterday with picture we went down to pictures.
Uh we went for a drive. Well, we went up to see Winnie's uh sister-in-law's a friend, a partner and he was in had surgery. So, we came back and we said, "We're going to go down to pictures." We went down to pictures.
When we got chatting to this lady, and all of a sudden we discovered she's a Christian.
Then she says, "Her husband's a Christian."
We didn't know them.
But they sensed something different about Winnie and about me.
And they And then I got talking to them and And then I realized, "Sure, he's from Long Pond."
What better place to come from?
Huh?
Long Pond.
But we had a commonality and uh we when we talked for a few minutes, we we had that we felt that spirit of Christ in us that they belonged to another church, but we felt that they were family.
You know what I'm saying? What I'm talking about? When you meet a fellow believer, no matter what church they belong to, and you have the sense of really excitement. Oh, you're part of the family.
It's beautiful. Beautiful.
The parent spirit of God, the spirit of God.
The spirit of the presence of the Holy Spirit comes, God is with us. The second thing that I want to leave with you this morning is this, a purifying work of the spirit, God makes us holy.
There is nothing I can do, my friends, nothing I can say, nothing I can think, there is no behavior I can have that can make me holy.
But only through the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit in my heart, living in tongue.
Holiness, living a holy life is not self-improving or polishing us off to be of a certain image. That's not holy living.
Holy living is when the spirit of God cleanses the heart and he form and he and he forms the spirit of Christ within us.
The spirit cleanses the heart.
Why do you think David, the shepherd boy, was so important? Why do you think God and like uh loves David? Because the Bible says David was a man after who?
David was what?
Tell me.
After God's own heart.
God knows our heart.
Paul prayed, "May the God of peace himself sanctify you through and through."
Now, through and through means entirely to to me means my mind, my motives, my desires, and my attitudes.
God must have all there is of Wilson Perrin if he's really going to do the job he wants to do in me and through me.
So, when the spirit of God comes and cleanses my heart, the spirit of God produced the fruit of the spirit in me.
Galatians 5, you'll know this well.
Some of the fruit of the spirit, can you name them? Some of them for me. What are some of the fruit of the spirit?
Can you Love?
Joy?
Patience?
Kindness?
Goodness?
Faithfulness?
Gentleness?
Self-control? All of these things the spirit of God and gives us to us to be able to grow.
So, we we're able to grow, we're able to mature in our relationship.
Now, in Galatians 5, it's striking we have an interesting thing.
The works of the flesh are human produced.
But the fruit of the spirit is God produced.
Holiness is not trying.
You don't become holy by trying harder.
Okay?
It's not about that. It's not about trying harder.
It's yielding deeper to Jesus.
Yielding your life. We used to sing a this course in the Sunday school. Yield not to temptation. Remember that one?
For yielding is sin.
You know?
Yielding.
Yes, ask ask the savior to help you.
Do Do anybody you remember Can we sing that for a moment? You know what the course Yield not to temptation for >> [chanting] >> yielding is sin.
Each victory will help you some other to win.
Fight manfully onward dark passions subdue.
Look ever to Jesus.
He will carry you through.
Ask the Savior to help you.
Comfort, strengthen, and keep >> and keep you.
He'll willing to aid He'll willing He will carry you through.
Thank you, church. That's beautiful.
That was absolutely beautiful.
As we yield our life to Jesus, oh, what a wonderful experience about. And the Spirit also burns away the things that don't belong.
Now, I don't know about you, but there's always a battle going on.
And I I remember reading this illustration some years ago, and I hope I get it right. Uh It goes something like this, uh um Some guy was struggling with sin, and this old native guy said to him, he said, he said, "Sin," he says, "is like this." He says, "You have two dogs within you." And I think it is. Two dogs. There's what we call the good dog and the evil dog. Whatever it is. Whatever I can't remember.
Something like that.
And he said, and you said he said, "Well, what happens when these two people fight?"
He says, "The one that you feed most is the one that wins."
All right?
The one that you feeds most is the one that wins.
All right, that's true.
But thanks be to God, the Holy Spirit enables us to burn away the dross, and burn away the impurities in our lives, so that we can be what God wants us to be.
And then the third thing I want to leave with you this morning is this.
The power of the Spirit of God enables you and I to live holy lives.
Let me tell you, my friends, we're we're we're fragile creatures, are we not?
Do you ever feel like you're weak and fragile?
My goodness, some days I I don't think I got it together.
Some days it's hard to get out of bed, right?
Physically, some days it's hard to get up and get going.
And I And it's life can be pretty fragile.
But life is not about the whole Living holy living is not about fragility or weakness.
Holy living is about allowing the Holy Spirit to empower your daily life.
We say What did we sing in earlier? What was the one of the courses we sang earlier about that? The power.
We got the power in whose name?
The name of Jesus. Not your power.
It's not your It's not your doing.
We got the power in the name of Jesus who gives us the strength to live that life. The Spirit gives us power to overcome sin. Galatians 5 and 16 says, "Walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the spirit the desires of the flesh."
Paul does not say, "Try harder and you won't sin." He doesn't say that. He says, "Walk by the Spirit."
In other words, be influenced by the Spirit of God. Be influenced by the Spirit's gentle leadership on your life.
Be influenced by the strength of the Spirit of God. Let God lead you and He will never lead you astray.
Would you believe that?
Hope you do.
The Spirit of God gives us power to love.
The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit according to Romans 5 and 5.
God gives us a wonderful love. A love not only for God, but a love for your neighbor, a love for the difficult, a love for the unlovely.
And over the years, I've had to love some unlovely people.
I've had to love some people who were not very nice to me.
I didn't like them.
I didn't like them. I didn't like them.
And when I saw them coming, I really wanted didn't want to talk to them.
I'll be honest, there were people I didn't want to talk to.
Why? They were just nasty people. They had bad attitudes. Like life was, you know, you remember that Charlie Charlie Brown cartoon guy goes around with the dark cloud over his head?
You know you remember that character?
There are a lot of people like that. Oh, life is rough.
Oh, I'm bad. Hey, how was your day? Oh, really bad.
They live like that.
But the power of the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to overcome sin.
The power of the Holy Spirit gives us power to love. The power of the Holy Spirit gives us the power to witness.
And the I Acts 1:8 says, "You shall receive power and you will be my witnesses."
A holy life is a powerful testimony, my friend.
Byron Brooks is a good example of that.
A man who loved God.
I promised myself I'm going to do that.
But a life lived for God hard to miss.
Hard to miss.
A life of testimony, spirit-filled believer who loved the Lord.
Wasn't noisy.
God knows he didn't make much fuss.
He loved Jesus.
And he lived it.
Talk to his family there. Talk to his family, they'll tell you.
He lived it.
So, the world can have a better example this morning than him.
The power of the spirit gives us the ability to persevere.
And then get through all that he and then I'm sure the family wouldn't want it.
I'm sure they're listening.
But as he was going through the sickness and I used to say to him, "Lauren, how you doing?" "I'm doing fine." He used to say always to me, "I just He just I just had a love of the Lord."
He just took it as a one more day challenge.
My friends, when life kicks us, knocks us down, beats us up, and throws us around, I hope we can still say at the end of the day, "I'm in his hands."
I'm in his hands.
You can be knocked down, but you don't have to be out.
You don't have to give up.
You might think you're defeated, but if Jesus is That's all the Holy Spirit is living in your heart, you can face anything.
It doesn't mean that it's going to be easy. God knows it is not easy. We can't fool ourselves think it's going to be easy. It's never easy, but we can be sure one thing, when the spirit of God is in our hearts, when we're trying to do our best in the name of Jesus, when we are honest and our integrity is intact, I truly believe we can go through anything. We can weather any storm.
We can face any storm.
This Tuesday night we will talk about We will talk about the parable of the wise and foolish builder. This uh Wednesday Tuesday night We'll talk about that. And talk about it You know, it depends upon where do you build your relationship. If you build yourself on Jesus the rock, Christ Jesus, you got it made.
You got it made.
And you'll never lose.
Let me conclude The Holy Spirit wants to make you better.
The Holy Spirit doesn't want to make you bitter.
He wants to make you better.
There's a chorus we what we used to sing I come to love it. It says Mine, mine, mine.
I know thou art mine.
Savior, dear savior, I know thou art mine.
That's my relationship this morning with Jesus.
And I pray this morning that if your heart is not right with Christ, here's a place we have a mercy seat in the Salvation Army. Have mercy seat, a place where we can come and find mercy.
Right?
There's room at the cross for all of us.
No matter who you are.
And I don't know where you are in your relationship with Jesus this morning.
I have no idea where you are. Some of you might be you know, so-so.
Some of you might be struggling with that relationship and you get discouraged or as I said earlier, you get discouraged and just a little. Well, let me remind you.
He He loves you. God loves you. You know that?
Do you believe that? That's the key.
To To know it is one thing, but do you believe it?
God loves you.
And he desires through his Holy Spirit morning to come and fill our hearts with his love. Now, I'm going to ask the worship team to come back and share.
I think we should sing that chorus that we sang earlier. Holy Spirit, thou art welcome in this place.
And if there's anyone this morning you'd like to come and renew yourself you renew you can come and just stand here. You don't have to necessarily kneel. If [music] If you find kneeling difficult, just come to stand. That's fine, too.
But we're going to sing that and we're going to give you an opportunity to let the spirit of God let acknowledge this morning, acknowledge that God is in your life. That's what we need to do. We need [music] to acknowledge that God is with us.
Will you stand with me as the congregation as we sing?

And after we sing that song, we'll have the benediction.
I just remind you that this afternoon, the visitation will take place here from 2:00 to 4:00, and 6:00 to 8:00 uh for Byron Brooks. So, we invite you to come back and give support to the family, and I'm sure they'll appreciate that.
And as you know, as Robert tomorrow is the service at 2:00 p.m., and uh hopefully we'll be able to live stream the service uh with no problems, okay? Let's sing this song, Lord, I Make a Full Surrender, all I have I yield to thee.
>> [music] >> Lord, I make
