This analysis provides a sobering reality check on Disney’s attempt to repackage episodic fatigue as a cinematic event. It correctly identifies that no amount of budget can mask a franchise that has traded its soul for corporate obligation.

Drinker's Chasers - Mandalorian And Grogu First ImpressionsAdded:
I will say because we've got Chris Gore here and he's on a timer because he has to leave relatively soon.
>> He's a big deal. He's a big deal.
>> So, we need to use him, gentlemen. We need to use him hard.
>> Well, so uh and we got Chris Gore, not Frank Gore this time. Um >> yeah, I I'm nearly sober this time. So, thanks for having me back.
>> Yeah, it's it's always a pleasure to have you here. But I was going to ask you, you have seen the first 25 minutes of Mango and Grock the movie.
>> Yeah. Well, >> we'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
>> Yeah, I saw it twice. I saw at Cineacon they screened 18 minutes which is uh that's impressive. You don't normally show that much of a movie usually just >> unless you're desperate. Unless you're correct.
>> Yeah. On u May the 4th in a deal where they uh tickets were free by the way at IMAX screens across the country. Anyone could get tickets. This was not a press event. So on May the 4th, corporate Star Wars day, they screened the first 25 minutes of the movie to the biggest fans who were able to get those tickets. And I saw the 18 minutes. I saw seven minutes beyond. And let me just say, uh, whatever your favorite Mandalorian episode is, this is not as good as that.
>> It's it's it's pretty weak. It's it's an episode with a slightly larger budget, but it still looks lit for TV. It's I'm sure you read the descriptions. You know, it's a it's a mission where Mando starts out kind of like uh almost like the dark knight in the shadows, taking out Imperial snow troopers to go after one of the evil Imperial henchmen uh warlords in this deck of cards. And he takes him out in this whole, you know, uh uh you know, cat-and- mouse game on, you know, ads. What was surprising was this. We're seeing it with fans on May the 4th. And you would think if when Mando comes out, there'd be big applause. Nothing. Grou comes out, nothing. No reaction. The thing that got the biggest reaction was Zeb. And I don't even know who the [ __ ] that is.
>> From Rebels.
>> Yeah. So Zeb from Rebels >> got a big reaction. Um, they complete the mission, go off to whatever, meet with Sigourney Weaver, uh, and she tells him he's going to go after all these other people, including Rod of the Hut.
>> And she gives him she gives him a brand new Razor Crest. It's brand new. New old stock, as they say, >> but it looks visually identical to the old one, which is convenient.
>> Just another one. Who cares? Um, they go off on this mission to find Rod of the Hut and they they give some money to Martin Scorsese's four armed monkey character that runs a little cafe. Uh, you probably saw that in the trailer.
And in one of the dumbest, this is how I know Dave Fona uh was one of the writers on this. This is written for children.
This is this is for kids. And I mean I don't mean like look Star Wars was for kids and adults and people of all ages.
This is clearly for children. So his character, Martin Scorsese's character, uh Mando asks him, "We're trying to find Rod of the Hut." He says, "Oh, he's right there." points across the street where there's a billboard with Rod of the Hut's picture because he's he's in a coliseum uh doing like MMA fights. It's very stupid. So then Mando goes and to confront Route of the Hut. Uh cut there. That's the first 25 minutes of what's a two hour and 12 minute movie that I'll see a week from today. Actually, I don't know why they're screening it so soon. Um, I don't know what makes them think this is going to be a hit. It is a distillation of the TV show with perhaps bigger looking budget, but it's so lit for TV.
I don't know why this they're bothering with IMAX and it's unimpressive. I I mean already the estimates you've heard are under so below solo >> and >> it's they really it's clear to me they don't know what they're doing. I I I get the sense there are different factions at uh Lucasfilm. Well well some people want to do this some people want Mando movie. Other people want Ahsoka whatever. It just seems like they don't know what they're doing with this property. and uh Grou the the I think the thing that was most telling was the non reaction from people like a packed and I was saw it at the Universal AMC CityWalk that is the biggest IMAX screen in LA and it was a very lukewarm reaction and people walked out everyone got free posters and they were like uh I talked to a super fan who I run into at screenings and he said, "Yeah, it's kind of lame."
And he pointed out a specific reason it looked lame because of the titles. The titles are like a TV show. So, you know, in a TV show you see like, you know, starring Pedro Pascal, starring this actor, starring Sigourney Weaver. the the title sequence of the movie opens with a paragraph about the warlords and the state of the galaxy, but then it just is like a regular TV episode.
Nothing special about the titles. I mean, I think we all remember when you saw the titles for the original Star Wars or the titles for Superman the motion picture, right? They were amazing. They got you pumped to see the movie. These are lame ass TV titles like any episode of The Mandalorian. Like really unimpressive. Nothing we haven't seen before. And the fact that it got no reaction from this crowd on May the 4th who got to see it for free before everyone else. And look, I wasn't invited as press. I registered on the Fandango website. I got tickets like everyone else. I thought I'm not going to go. I've already seen it. I thought I want to see how people react because Cineacon is not a good gauge. They for sure flew people in to overreact to things, including the Doomsday trailer, which I which I saw. We can talk about that if you want, but I expect this to >> they'll never say it bombed. They'll say it underperformed, but it doesn't look good. And also, by the way, tickets are plentiful. I'm sure you've looked. I'm sure. Um, uh, Jeremy, you already have tickets.
>> I do not for this because I don't need to buy them in advance. Um, I will be watching this. It'll be the first Star Wars thing I've seen in a long time.
Outside I get I did watch the acolyte because couldn't pass up on that grift.
But outside of that, I haven't really seen anything Star Wars in a long time.
But no, I haven't got my tickets yet.
And I don't think I need to worry about it. I pointed out, and I know we're going to talk about the Odyssey later, and this is not about the Odyssey, but it's a point that 12 hours into the trailer releasing for the Odyssey, it had more views on it than the Mandalorian trailer that dropped two weeks ago.
>> Oh, and that should tell you everything you need to know about the state of Star Wars. The Mandalorian trailer if two weeks has 4 million views.
That is where Star Wars is at right now.
>> It's that irrelevant and nobody cares.
So, it gets the same views as a drinker video. That's >> pretty much kind of crazy much. Yeah, >> it's crazy.
>> I mean, that's that's I guess where we're at. So, people in chat were asking as well about Mango and Grock. That that just came from a super chat once that Muller and I got when we were doing Last Orders. And I think someone's auto correct must have been playing up and it was like the question was like, "Are you excited for the Mango and Grock movie?"
>> And for some reason, it just tickled us.
>> I feel like everyone needs to put that in their videos when it comes out at some point.
It's for sure going in my review.
>> There's just a profound lack of enthusiasm, which I would even ascribe to Marvel as well, you know, having been at Cineacon and seeing the Doomsday trailer, and it was weird. I was sitting next to a group of people I hadn't seen before who were like trained seals clapping and overreacting to everything at that Marvel presentation. and >> like plants basically.
>> Yes. I mean, uh I'm not the only one that mentioned it. You know, they fle it seems like and this isn't illegal. It's kind of like ballot harvesting. Uh one of the one of the parties here that keeps winning and it's really bizarre.
Seems to engage in acts. DJ, you probably know more about that.
>> Chris, no. I'm very uncomfortable talking politics, so let's just move on.
It's not really my cup of tea. I don't know.
>> Yeah. That's really Yeah. Too divisive of a topic for me.
>> I'm just saying it's not illegal, but cuz anyone >> It's manipulative. It's manipulative.
>> Anyone can buy a ticket to Cineacon. You don't need to be You can go as press if you want to jump through those hoops or buy a ticket. It's like Comic-Con. So, >> anyone can go and that's I guess that's fine to do, but I didn't sense any enthusiasm. And then Supergirl. I mean, I feel that movie's DOA based on what I saw.
>> Um, >> I think we all >> Yeah, it is. It is interesting that we're talking about something like Supergirl. We're talking about something like Star Wars, but then something like Project Hail Mary has been crushing it because of word of mouth, you know, and we're seeing a lot of that. Like, I just saw the Hollywood Reporter dropped their Mortal Kombat 2 review and they said it's strictly for the fans. And you could feel the hate when they said that.
Now, I haven't seen MK2. I'm going to see it tonight. But it does seem like there's a clear divide right now that there's things that are coming out that fans are loving and that the corporate media hates. And >> look at Michael.
>> Yes, I've seen it multiple times and it is one of the best theater experiences I've had. It's amazing. I love that movie so much. Um, and so it's it's a weird dynamic right now. And Star Wars feels like the perfect corporate media movie right now. The Mandalorian movie feels like a corporate media movie and that the fans are going to reject reject it. It's the complete opposite of Project Hail Mary. It's the complete opposite of Michael. Um and so that's going to be an interesting dynamic as we move further into the year.
>> I if The Mandalorian feels like the very definition of meh. Like every aspect of it is boring as [ __ ] like every trailer, every Super Bowl commercial, every screenshot they've released of it is boring. And Chris, you compared it to like Avengers Doomsday, but I think the difference there is Avengers Doomsday has characters in it. Theoretically, at least, characters that have personalities and that we re we remember and we recognize they were once upon a time interesting and we supported them.
So, it's got that. The Mandalorian and Grou has nothing. Like he's got a character with no personality. He is the definition of a blank slate. He doesn't have enough. He doesn't even have a face most of the time. So that you can just I don't know. He's like an avatar for the audience. And you've got a little [ __ ] green baby thing that can't talk. So that's not really a character either. What is in this movie to even get excited about? It's slop. Generic boring slop. Have you heard Ryan Kennel's theory as to what they're going to do in this movie?
>> Ry Ryan Kennel's theory, who is the most knowledgeable Star Wars fan there is. We know um he has theorized, it's just a theory, he's not making a prediction that they're going to CG Han, Luke, and Leia in this movie to get that social media reaction to get >> that's just a theory of his. And it when he first said it, I was just like, "This doesn't." And then the more he was like, "They need something to get people talking. What else do they have other than that?"
>> It's so disgusting and [ __ ] It's probably true.
>> Exactly.
>> What uh what context did he sort of suggest for that? Or was he just saying in general? Yeah, I think he was saying in general because he was saying this off the cuff on uh Geeks and Gamers Daily one morning and the more that like, you know, like he was just basically talking about because Lucas Film and a lot of these Hollywood uh types now, what are they so caught up in? Moments. Moments. We need moments.
We need moments to get people talking is it the context is irrelevant. You know, the depth of the moment is irrelevant.
They just want to get social media reactions. I think it will be a huge mistake if they do this to the point where I'm kind of hoping they do because I want it to just backfire on them. I'm not sure if it's going to happen. And again, I want to be clear. He's not saying he has any inside information or anything like that. It's just a theory that he put out there from a desperation standpoint that to follow up from drinker's point, what do they have in this movie to get people talking.
