The Third Washington Conference (Trident Conference) held May 12-25, 1943, brought together Allied leaders Churchill and Roosevelt to coordinate WWII strategy, resulting in the planning of Operation Husky (Sicily invasion) and setting the target date for the Normandy invasion (D-Day) on May 1, 1944, though logistical challenges forced the invasion to be postponed by five weeks.

What meeting planned D-Day?Ajouté :
A meeting that planned two invasions.
On this day in history, May 19th, 1943, the Third Washington Conference continued in the nation's capital, bringing together Allied leaders to chart the course for victory in Europe and the Pacific.
By spring 1943, WWII had reached a pivotal moment.
The Allies had secured North Africa and were preparing their next moves against the Axis powers on multiple fronts.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S.
President Franklin D.
Roosevelt recognized the urgent need for strategic coordination.
From May 12th to May 25th, the two leaders met every 2 days in the White House, while their military commanders convened almost daily at the Federal Reserve Building.
The conference, codenamed Trident, addressed critical questions about Allied strategy.
Military planners debated the Italian Campaign and finalized Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily.
They discussed the deployment of forces across two theaters and assessed progress against Japan in the Pacific.
Most significantly, they set a target date of May 1st, 1944, for the cross-channel invasion of northern France, but the planning revealed serious logistical challenges.
Every British landing craft had been committed to the Sicily operation, leaving none available for France.
Only one U.S.
division could be immediately deployed, as Pacific operations against Japan held higher priority.
The shortage of supplies and equipment forced the postponement of the continental landings.
Roosevelt pushed forcefully for unconditional surrender terms, overriding opposition from Generals Eisenhower and Wilson, who favored negotiated settlements.
The conference concluded with Allied leaders predicting Germany's defeat in 1944, allowing full concentration on Japan in 1945, although reality proved more difficult.
The Normandy invasion occurred 5 weeks later than planned, and Germany fought until May 1945.
Still, Trident established the strategic framework that guided Allied victory, demonstrating how careful planning, even when circumstances changed, could shape the outcome of global conflict.
