Earthquake activity follows plate tectonic boundaries, with South America currently experiencing elevated seismic activity due to stress transfer from the Pacific plate movement, which strains the Caribbean plate and increases earthquake potential along the Puerto Rico trench; this demonstrates how seismic activity in one region can influence stress patterns in adjacent tectonic zones.

SF Bay area Earthquakes increasing after quiet Spell. South America Eq activity. Tuesday Night.Added:
All right. How's it going out there, folks? Welcome back here to a Tuesday, May 26, 2026, 10:47 p.m. It is the Earth Master here. Hope everyone's having a wonderful evening out there. Latest activity here on the Earthquake 3D Globe. Looks like a 2.5 earthquake across the South America area. Still seeing a pretty good cluster of activity down here along the Pru Chili Trench.
Uh it's been quite active out here in the last few days. Of course, we had that larger event, a sixpointer, that being a 6.9, almost a 7.0 earthquake uh just yesterday. So, we're still seeing some aftershock sequences going on there. Quite a few fours. The latest of 5.1 within that same area about 63 miles deeper. So, there's always always some concern that we could see uh potentially another larger quake in that area. much larger than what the uh magnitude was there yesterday. It's very capable that we could see that. But we'll continue to watch that. But for now though, aftershock sequence is continuing. Uh eastern portion of the country pretty quiet. Texas and the oil fields and earthquakes kind of go hand in hand out there out in the Perian Basin and other areas of the Texas region. New Madrid zone pretty quiet out there for now. Uh looking out here at the west coast, there's some activity up there across the Cascades and some of the volcanoes, but really nothing big going on.
Uh I was just looking at the uh seismograph station up there around Mount St. Helens and there's still some activity up here. Let me show you guys.
Uh nothing big, just a handful of smaller quakes and they're reporting, you know, a little fraction of them.
Nothing uh too exciting, but as you can see there on the graph, there's quite a few little spikes showing up. And um even if we go back the last day here, the UTC time, you'll see that there's been quite a bit of uh smaller quake activity showing up here.
Couple of them out there, but nothing big, folks. Otherwise, I think we would definitely know about it. uh northern California, another earthquake out there around the uh Viola area that's east of Reading up into the Sierra Nevada mountains, north of Mount um or Lassen Volcanic Park.
Mount Lassen that is. Um couple earthquakes out there, but I think this activity, if you go back and look here, there's been kind of a stretch out here towards the Cascadia all across Northern California. I do think that has something to do with the uh strain building out there along the Cascadia.
The uh slow slip event map tonight shows us that we got uh 55 epicenters of trimmer underneath Northern California.
Of course, that seems to be adding some stress out here across the mountain ranges and whatnot, but ultimately will add stress across the locked area of the southern end of the Cascadia subduction zone.
Uh the Bay Area. What about the Bay Area? It's been so quiet all of a sudden. Now we got a little bit of activity stirring up near Alamo and also the San Leandro area. That is uh well some of that's on the Hayward fault in between the Hayward fault and the northern end here of the Calaveris fault today. So it's been relatively quiet. I wasn't expecting you know an extended quiet period across the Bay Area of San Francisco, but uh uh it looks like that's coming to an end right now.
Uh nothing big, but this stirred up earlier this evening. Looks like around six o'clock or so. And uh I I'd say we got a little swarm going on here. About 11 earthquakes um around the area of the Bay region.
This little cluster right here is the main region around Alamo, northern end of the Calaver fault zone. And uh so it's, you know, it's straining out there. There's a lot of potential here for some big earthquake activity.
Uh but the quiet spell looks like it's over. We'll continue to watch that though as we get uh that swarm going on there. The San Andreas fault pretty quiet though for now. This activity not on the San Andreas fault, but it has everything to do with the San Andreas fault in terms of uh these fracture faults that branch off of the plate boundary.
Also down there around the Johannesburg area still swarming 14 earthquakes or so. That's been a hot spot of earthquake activity here recently about 52 earthquakes and that's just in the last week. If we go back the last few months or so, it's been fairly elevated across the uh the Garlock fault shear zone.
Nothing big, but uh it's definitely been an interesting swarm of activity.
Southern California further down south here. A little quiet. Nothing much uh going on here. Looks like most of the movement shifting up to the north here in the last few hours.
Look at this line of activity. It's pretty much connect the dots out here um from Northern California all through Nevada up through the Utah area. You guys see that? Almost evenly spaced out here. You could pretty much draw a line all the way from here all the way up north. That's a little odd. You don't see that too often there.
Uh, I'm sure it's just a coincidence that it looks like that, but uh, Nevada starting to kick up here across the western side here.
Uh, nothing big. Some twos out there, it looks like, and some ones.
I just thought that was kind of cool to see uh, little line of activity. Maybe some tunnels going on down there. I I doubt that. I think that's just purely coincident coincidental there. Um, let's see. the big island of Hawaii. We got uh still some aftershock activity over there where that six-pointer struck a couple days ago, but waiting on the Kilaway volcano. Let's go see if that eruption has started at Kilawea volcano.
Here is the latest webcam imagery here from the summit area. Uh looks like it's starting to glow a little bit there.
There is uh some glowing going on there across the volcano, but it doesn't uh look like we're in the eruption status yet. Pretty close. We got to be getting close because if you look at the inflation data here, I know we had a little drop there. Um this is the last two days of activity. This was yesterday when had a deflationary event, but we're starting to go back up it looks like after leveling out a little bit. We're getting close. Got to be getting close here to the uh what is it? episode 48.
Um, summit inflation resumed just afternoon today and is continuing at a slow pace. The summit tilt meter uh recorded some uh deflationary activity there yesterday, which pushed back the onset of episode 48.
Um, but you know, we're back up. We're starting to inflate again. So, I think we'll see that very, very soon.
uh the rest of the planet here.
Let's see what we got. Largest magnitude I believe is going to go to some activity there in the Tonga area. Let's see what we got here. 5.4 Tonga. Couple fives today. We got four of them. And all four of those are after midnight, including the most recent one down there along the Chile area. Nothing big. We're looking at the uh Japan area. Things I don't know. They've been awfully quiet up here in the last few days. I'm sure that's going to fill in. It has to fill in. I mean, it just it goes through these little cycles here being quiet and then not so quiet. Uh but right now it's still fairly quiet up and down the board here around the curl cam chat all the way down to Taiw Taiwan.
Uh but uh you know the quiet spells, they can break quite easily. A lot of older activity there across the Tonga region um from early this morning. I'm gonna Well, I think that should be fine far as the date goes.
New Zealand, not so much going on there.
The rest of the planet, as you can see, fairly quiet aside from the typical movement there across the Java Trench.
Looks like South America is just a hot spot of activity and that that is uh straining the area up north there along the Caribbean.
Uh the general plate stress model. If you look uh does have the South America area with these arrows pointing to the north. So when this plate moves uh the South America plate here, it tends to put the squeeze up here. It's literally squeezing the Caribbean plate here. A little little small plate in between the North American and the South America plate. Uh with activity stressing and straining here. Uh looks like that is shifting up north here around the Puerto Rico trench. Nothing big, but definitely noticeable uh noticeable pattern there of increasing activity. Uh, but I we've only had one fivepointer from that 6.9.
That's a little odd. Let me see here real quick.
See that? Only one fivepointer, and that's the one here in the last hour.
Um, just a little light in terms of the aftershock activity out there, but who knows? We'll have to kind of watch that and see if it picks back up or not.
That is uh definitely our hot spot out there right now, the South America area.
Even get some migration down south here.
Some newer activity along the Pchilly Trench. So hopefully this isn't going to unzip into a bigger quake. It always definitely always could.
4.1 there off the coast of Nicaragua, it looks like.
But aside from that, let's see what we got here for space weather activity.
Space weather activity. There is the sun.
What do we got on the sun? Anything big?
There's an active area way out there on the northeastern limb. A little disappointed with all the sunspots that are currently facing the planet. There's a number of them, but they are all starting to weaken. Uh the one area that I am watching closely is going to be this this region back down here. There's still quite a bit of complexity here, but maybe transforming or switching up here.
in terms of the order of the polarity that uh could strengthen back up here.
We'll have to watch that sunspot.
Everything else though, fairly quiet.
There's that large area back here across the northeastern limb of the sun. Um that one uh you know it's got some bright features there if you look in the UV image. So that is currently flaring.
Overall flare threat right now 5% chance there for X flare. M flare at 35, seaf flare at 95% chance. Proton event up there a little bit at around 15% chance.
Uh no major auror activity in the forecast for now.
Uh let's see, Storm Prediction Center.
Any uh major severe weather today? We did have some thunderstorm activity out here in u northern California today, just outside of Chico where I'm at. Uh but far as the storm reports go today, five tornado reports down across Texas.
It looks like um looks like some brief tornadoes. Nothing big. One tornado out there in the Florida area. Aside aside from that, looks like some hail and some wind reports.
Far as anything major coming up, there's nothing major there in the forecast for now. Just uh bit of thunderstorm activity out there next couple days. So, all right folks, I'm going to jump off here. The seismograph stations look pretty quiet. Not a whole lot going on.
Have yourself a wonderful Tuesday night.
We'll catch you guys back out here for the uh Wednesday morning update. Have a good one.
