Spray foam insulation is an effective solution for attic retrofitting that creates an airtight seal, eliminates ice damming, and provides high R-values (R-40s), though its success depends heavily on proper installation quality and experienced contractors rather than the material itself.

STOPPING HEAT LOSS!!!本站添加:
All right. So, making our way upstairs, we had the upper main roof sprayed here as well as one of the attic spaces that went out over the first floor spaces on the back of the house. And if you remember in our first video, we walked around the outside, we talked about some of the ice dams, and actually most of them are pretty much gone. I'm looking out the window where we saw them. So, most of those are pretty well gone. And we're going to crawl into the attic hatches best I can. My days of crawling attic hatches, yeah, they're slowly ceasing to exist. But, we're going to check out the great job that Rodrigo and Jesus did there. We're going to talk about what they finished it with. I'll give you a little bit of insight on my thoughts on closed-cell spray foam, and uh yeah, let's check out their work. So, I'll see you in the attic.
>> [music] [music] >> All right. So, we returned to the scene of spraying here, and you can see it's all in there. It's fully cured.
It's been about 2 weeks since they sprayed this. We really It was certainly beneficial to the client in that they were going away on vacation for a couple weeks. So, we scheduled it such that the insulation could come in on the first day that they left and completed the second day, but then they were gone for an additional 12 days, so this could cure, set up, um and you can see here it's a it's a certainly a job very, very well done. Now, you know, I know some people out there in the industry, they have a strong aversion to using spray foam. I certainly don't.
I know a lot of you know what I would consider top-notch building science types and builders that you know we all look at what is the right material for that task. And I know there are some people that are hardliners and I will never use spray foam and that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinions. We're all entitled to how we want to operate. I don't think personally that that it is a material that I need to avoid 100%.
Now, when we have other options, do I go that route? Sometimes, sometimes not.
It's discussions with the client, the builder, how we want to operate, do we want to condition the attic? I mean, this space here, if you remember, initially we had this was you know filled with fiberglass bats.
You couldn't even basically look down here. It was absolutely horrendous. It was air open, wrong insulation, wrong solutions. Now it's nice and airtight, fully insulated. We have you know roughly about 7 [snorts] in there. So we're at around the high R40s.
Very airtight. We're going to eliminate the ice damming here, but we also now have you know an attic of say 4 ft in height that this is really good storage space. It still needs to get a little bit of cleanup here. We'll get some new plywood in here and basically have a really nice little storage attic for you know Christmas decorations, your extra luggage and stuff like that. So it works out really well, but getting back to you know is this the right solution? I think a lot of it comes down to and it's true of all materials in the building industry. You can have the best material or the worst material, whatever, and it really comes down to how is it installed? And you know, one of the things about Jesus and his crew at Advanced Green is I think they are one of the best insulation installers that we work with. I mean, there's other good ones, too, um no doubt, but these guys are really good. Um they care. Jesus oversees the work. His guys, I mean, Rodrigo who was the gentleman that actually did the installation here, they he crawled through here, sprayed it, did a beautiful job. He's been doing it for I don't know, upwards of like 18 years.
So, he has a lot of experience in how this goes. There's no delamination, there's no it's shrinking away, none of that. It looks like a really good job and it is in fact a job very, very well done. So, I don't think, you know, again, people sit there and say, "Oh, I've never used spray foam. Oh, it's going to do this, going to do that." But think of how many houses get fiberglass bats that were in here, that were installed, and that was basically a horrific installation. It was an air permeable insulation in this attic space. This room was cold because there's no insulated door here, no air barrier across here, and so there's right materials for the right job. And what was in here was absolutely horrendous. And could we go on the outside and insulate it? Yeah, maybe, but then we have to tear, you know, the cost of um stripping all of the shingles off the roof and changing the profile on the fascia. There's there's a whole bunch of things that come along with that, too.
So, um you know, I know a lot of projects that were in my early days, you know, 25-plus years ago, that I've seen spray foam get installed at and those houses are still performing exceptionally well. And, you know, some of them are top-notch building science types that uh you know, their choice is the right material um should be the one chosen. And, like all materials, there's good execution and there's bad execution. And, for this one here, I think this is um certainly a job very, very well done by Jesus and his crew, but I think this was the right solution anyways for what we did here. So, anyways, hopefully you um enjoyed the uh trip. Go check out some of the other videos that we have. We're we're talking about insulating the basement and uh you know, I went through uh the back of the truck with Jesus, where we talked about what sets him apart and his investment in making sure that he has the right equipment to do the job properly for you, which I think, you know, that's a sign of a really good um subcontractor, especially in the insulation field.
Because, I know a lot of guys that pull up, they have the truck, the drums, and yes, it's a mixture that, you know, somebody's responsible for right here that maybe doesn't have the same controls that Jesus has installed in his vehicles, right? So, it's not certainly not inexpensive to be who he is, but that translates into a job very well done for you. So, anyways, again, hopefully you enjoyed that. If you're a subscriber, thank you very much. Greatly appreciate you joining in. If you're not a subscriber, then uh uh yeah.
Smash that subscribe button. Go tell all your friends, you know, Steve is out here on the job crawling through attics to uh make sure that we bring you the very latest and the very best and unbiased uh opinions on stuff. So, yeah. Go tell all your friends.
I guess that's where we end it. So, all I've got left to say, you know it. I'm Steve Basic Architect.
Until next time, long live our buildings.
