The video offers a grounded look at cross-cultural domesticity, yet it risks romanticizing the slow, manual grind of basic construction as a grand personal saga. It is a modest documentation of progress that prioritizes the sentiment of "building a dream" over any real architectural insight.

Day 27 : We finally have more hollowblocks π΅πAdded:
All right, welcome back, guys. It is about 9:30.
Um, this is, I think, our first portion of this video for today.
um trying to get through the stupidity for traffic here to get out to the property.
We've been out there already. We took the guys out from the apartment and then we had to run and grab some uh grocery items for the guys as well as for us. So now we've got the we bought a whole bunch of eggs for them, some creamer and stuff and we're getting it out there now. Um, so we're going to get out there. They've we've got two more loads of um back fill that are already scheduled to come this morning and we're going to get at least two more scheduled for the rest of the day. On top of that, we should be getting some hollow blocks and as soon as we get out, we're going to have Ed order >> get another 100 bags of cement. So, um, we're going to be pretty busy with it's just the the back fill is really really dusty and dirty cuz what basically what it is is um broken down hollow blocks. So, um, and it's it's broken down pretty pretty good.
>> Fine, right?
>> Yeah, it's pretty it's like down into dusty dirt.
So, it's going to be in the bottom and then we'll put um more regular soil up above it. So, but to fill in what we can uh for the price, it's it's worth it. Um because everything down in this area is is more expensive. So, >> I think what it's like >> it's hot.
No, it's uh >> plain and simple, it's hot.
>> No, it's uh yesterday was extremely humid. The most humidity that we've had since we've been down here >> here in >> uh and it is it was it was really really hot and sticky. It was just like you were sitting in a sauna without the the massive heat. wasn't temperature- wise wasn't bad, but the the heat um level with the humidity just really really rough. So hopefully today it's going to be a little better.
>> We'll see.
>> We'll see. And I don't know. I know that there is a typhoon um over by Guam.
>> Yeah.
>> I don't know if we're catching some of the moisture and stuff from that.
or or what the deal is here. So, um we'll see how it goes today as far as the the weather goes, but um if we could just get this person to drive just a little bit better, um then we could get out to the property.
Um uh if you if you've driven in the Philippines, let us know down below and tell us your experiences. We've had every day we have an experience here driving in the Philippines.
>> It's always an adventure.
>> Um and most of the time it is is lack of attention by drivers. Honestly, it's just and common sense. Lack of attention and common sense. Um, and it's it's funny because everybody has to be first here.
>> They will not stay behind a tricycle if if there's even a possibility of getting around them. Um, they'll they will bully their way past even if they push scooters off of the road. Doesn't matter to them. They're going to be first.
They're going to be ahead of that tricycle. So, it's interesting. So, let us know what you guys have experienced.
And uh for those of you who haven't been over here, if if you're able to, you can pull up they're called camote drivers. K A M O T E drivers. Uh all you got to do is do a search on YouTube for it.
There's tons of videos of Filipino driving conditions. So look that up. Let us know what you think. So with that, we'll be out at the property shortly and give you guys an update.
We have a hollow block delivery. 500 yan yan >> 500. Ah 500.
>> Are these fives?
>> Yes, we have delivery right now.
>> The guys are under break. So, we have the first batch of delivery for Halo Blocks in here and we're still waiting for the back back field that we ordered.
But that's the latest right now.
And just show it to you. We still need to order some cement today.
So, yeah.
All right, guys. Uh we're back here at the property. Uh the guys just started back working. It's a little bit after 1.
Um so, we're going to we're going to just walk you guys through as much as we can. We can't walk.
Some of the back fill isn't in here yet, so we'll just kind of show it. But so we're in the This is the kitchen area of the house.
This is remember the back fill will come up to this level. This is the floor level. So back fill will come up and then we will end up pouring the floor.
This is the doorway going out to the dirty kitchen.
Uh you can look out here and and see where the dirty kitchen will be there. There's no walls um there. So that's where you exit the house to go out for the dirty kitchen.
As soon as you come in the house from the dirty kitchen, you have a doorway to your right here. And this is the pantry.
So if you look up on that back wall, you have you're going to have two windows, two 60x60 windows. And if you look down in the pantry, it's it's good size. It's nice. Uh again, we're right here in the kitchen area. So, um you're going to have the kitchen, dining area, and living room all in one space here. So, you come over here just a little bit and you're going to have like the dining area is going to be like right here. I'm not sure which way we're going to move table or whatever, but this is where it will be. So, you'll have the kitchen area. You're going to have a peninsula that comes out a little bit. And you'll have the dining area over here. This wall is Manlin's um decorative wall, I guess you could say it, where that's where the television, uh, some shelving stuff is going to go.
You have a doorway that's going out to the little little deck on the back right there.
And then over on this side of that decorative wall, you're going to have a 70 cm window. This window will be fixed. It will not open. So, it's just going to be to let light in and stuff. So, um so that is everything within this area is the kitchen, dining, living room area.
And then off to the side, the pantry.
So, um, we'll be able to have a nice nice living room here.
>> Um, you come over here. Once you step through here, you're into the master bedroom. Um, Richard's in here working on the the master. So, if you look up on that far wall on the right hand side, you're going to see an opening there.
That's a 160 cm window.
And then there's going to be two windows on the back that are 70 cm just like this one that's here.
So when you come in and the the master bedroom, if you take a left, you where Larry is standing here, you're going to walk into the the master bath.
>> And then if you walk down here, you're inside of the closet, the walk-in closet. So that will all be within the master suite or whatever you want to call it.
So, if you come from the main area here, you're going to come down the hallway.
It's not a very long hallway, but we'll come down here.
So, the the closet's going to be here.
So, this will all be walled off.
This will be walled off. There will be three windows right here. They'll be fixed just like those, but they'll probably be taller, so they'll let light in. There'll be three of them. When you get down to this area, you're going to have a doorway here, a doorway here, and a doorway here. So, you have the spare bedroom here where where Larry is working.
You have the office where Axel is working here. And then you have the spare bathroom over here.
So, they're busy putting in where the windows are going to go. So, you're going to have a a 100 Well, you're going to have a 60 cm window in the master bathroom. You're going to have a 120 cm window in the spare bedroom. And then you're going to have two 120 cm windows in the office.
And then in the spare bathroom, you're going to have another 60 cm. So that's a real quick version of the layout of the house. You'll see it better as more walls go up and go higher. So, but that's going to be better once the the back fill and stuff gets taken care of.
So guys are busy making the mortar mix for the uh hollow blocks. So uh we'll get back with you and show you the progress as it goes along.
Heat. Heat.
of heat.
Turn it up.
Indeed.
and >> Welcome back.
Um, so we've got got nine levels right here and they have five more to go before the beam height.
We got the two two windows down here in the master.
So you get an idea where they're at. Um they're they're off a little bit, but what they're what they did was they centered them between the wall and the beam and the wall and the beam. So they're centered in between the that distance. So um once it's in, it's not going to be because of the beam, it's going to be a little bit off, but it will work for us.
So um because if we did it differently, it would be would one would have been right up against the the beam and that would would not look good. So, uh, if you come around and then you can look in and you'll see it's be be a little bit off. Um, as far as where it's going to go, but where our bed is going to go is is basically where the beam is or where the column is uh in between the two two windows. So, the master bed will be down there along that uh section. So, I don't think you're going to notice much and I don't really care if somebody does. So, um we're we're we're adapting as we go because you have to adapt with uh this type of build with the the columns and stuff.
columns are going to push out a little bit once they're they're finished and they're they're um formed and everything.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> You're going to have >> um a decent amount popping out. So, like this like this here. So, >> maybe not maybe not quite this much >> uh for that those but you are going to have some that's going to come out into the room. So, uh, you have to be able to adjust yourself a little bit for windows and that kind of thing. So, if you if you look, you can see it a little bit.
Um, but it's fine. I mean, it's it's going to work out all right for us. And this this window here is the same size as those. So, what we are doing, um, we're changing up the the plan a little bit for what the architect put in.
Uh we're trying to do several uh sizes of windows.
We're just doing multiple of each size.
Uh the way the plan reads, it was just just total willy-nilly, just whatever whatever numbers. It was like it just wasn't going to work for us. Uh there was just odd shaped windows. Uh the um like this this was supposed to be one window over here and uh it was a really weird um dimension window that you can't buy and you would have to have made and we want these to open. So, um, we've been down that road where you you have the the quality of the those windows aren't that high. So, we wanted to make sure that we got good quality windows to open and the other ones can be made by a local window maker that are going to be sealed so we don't have to worry about opening some. So, we're putting the 260 x60s in here for the pantry and uh that'll be great for for the pantry. So, uh so far everything's going really well. They're they're knocking hollow blocks out really fast. So, I don't know if they'll uh get through that pile today.
Uh cuz we're not getting another load of hollow blocks until Monday. So, they've got all day tomorrow and they're not there's no way they're going to last through that.
>> No, >> you know, those hollow blocks will last through tomorrow. There's no way. So, um hopefully uh we can get a lot of back fill done tomorrow after they've done all the hollow bucks. We have one load of back over here and then we've got some >> we have one more that we're waiting on.
We have some other dirt and stuff over there and we we already plan on getting two more loads of back fill. So, we probably get quite a bit back filled in tomorrow. So, just depends on how quickly get the hollow block. So, we're filling up some water over here.
This is actually a really good spot for the >> the mixer covered. It's in the shade.
Um water's in a good spot. You got room over there for deliveries.
>> Yeah.
>> So, it's actually really nice. So, uh that's going to be our update for now. We'll come back after the end of the day and show you the end result. Uh we can show them the the pile of the hollow blocks. What is left out of that 500?
Not very many.
Uh just that right there.
>> This is it.
And then those will be those may be finished today.
>> Today. Yeah.
>> So, that's going to be it for right now.
We'll be back later.
Byebye.
be really nice.
>> So Mark is >> Mark is in the bathroom. Master bath.
>> Toilet is supposed to be over here.
>> Yeah.
>> How about we can't put the counter over here because of the door.
>> Yes. That's why it's on that side.
>> Do it over here. It'll be like two feet out.
here butt up against the where the the tub is going to. So should be pretty nice. So it'll look look good.
>> Everybody is busy.
Here and here Carlo, you're you're in Carlos's way.
>> I know. Just kick me. Push me out of the way.
Just push me out of the way.
I just wanted to measure that so we can cuz we have the two sinks. So if it's almost 7 ft, you'll be able to have the two s easily in there.
See these leaves cracking.
>> Is that the new one?
>> Yeah.
Oh, >> it happens up.
All right, guys. We're back. Uh, they just quit for the day. So, we're going to go through here real quick and show you the progress. So, um, got the, uh, the office, one of the office windows here. Uh, spare bedroom here. I think they're up to level one and two floors. You got nine, but two of those are below floor level. So the this is where floor level will be on the inside.
Um so the back fill for here will go to the beam.
Um but the interior uh the back fill will go up basically to the floor level. Um, and part of that is we have you get a lot of rain, so we don't want it to be ground level. You're asking for a lot of rain to come in and uh just create issues. This is the master with the two um 70 cm windows. And then around the corner, we have the 160 by 120 cm window for the back portion back here. And then all of this, we've discussed it before, all of this back here, all of that along the side is all the dog run. So, we're going to have a gate over here at this corner by the pantry, uh, all the way down by the the far wall, and then all the way around the corner down by the office corner. So, the dogs will be able to run around.
There's going to be a little bit of a deck coming out here.
Um, so I'm not sure what we're going to do as far as this. It may just be a poured patio. Um, I may do something different. I don't know. I'll have to talk to Richard about it. But, so, we got that small uh window and then we have the doorway coming in here. We decided we're going to do a regular door here instead of a I think that the it originally called for like a sliding glass door there as well.
And um we yeah, we don't we don't want that. So we wanted a a regular door here. On the other side of the house out from the kitchen area, dining area will be the sliding glass door.
Um, so I mean the the walls are definitely going up. It sounds like they're going to try and pour some of the columns tomorrow.
>> Uh, tomorrow is Saturday, so it's their their last day of work for the week. Um, hopefully we're going to get some more back fill so we can get uh some of this filled in.
And again, this is this is exterior. Um, but this is going to be holding the the roof beam and everything else up uh for the dirty kitchen. And so it'll be covered so we can be out there and we can cook and but we'll have the breeze, we'll have the the airflow and everything else through here. So, uh, laundry is going to be right in there.
And, uh, So, we'll have a little space for pretty much everything.
Um, so it's definitely going up. It's looking looking good. They've kept from putting any hollow blocks along this wall over here. Um, so they have access to go in and out while they're doing the other walls. So, um, they'll probably do that later, especially once we get back fill in here enough that we can get in and out of the doorway areas.
Um, cuz this is a doorway right here.
This is the main front door. Um, but to go through there, you're going to have to have some step up or something. And we have the steel here. So they can cut that out. But um so before they close this off, we got to have some access in there. And right now it's this this is the easiest access to all of these rooms through here. So uh you can see on this very front bathroom the window uh section up on the very upper outside level.
uh is 60 cm.
And uh so that's where the window's going to go in.
But everything's looking really good.
We've got a lot of uh lot of stuff accomplished so far this week. We still have one more day. So that is going to be it for today. Um, we want to thank everybody for all of your comments and uh, you know, we try to answer them as quick as we can and uh, you know, the the answers that we're we're giving are, you know, based off of of what we what we know, what we can um, try to explain it as best we can. So, sometimes that doesn't work very well, but uh we'll just keep trying and and hopefully you guys um can kind of get the gist of what we're talking about. So, with that, we will be back tomorrow for another hot day here in the Philippines. Thanks for watching.
