This case exposes the chilling intersection of performative heroism and psychological warfare, where an abuser scripts a tragedy just to cast himself as the savior. It is a sobering masterclass in how weaponized empathy can be used to systematically dismantle a victim's reality.

Husband Stalked, Attacked Then Pretended to RESCUE His WifeAdded:
After a husband stalked, attacked, and then pretended to rescue his own wife, a book was found at his apartment called Ways to Beer Hero. It appeared as though this whole scheme was a male's disturbing guide to gaslighting.
Thankfully, this is a survivor story, and this survivor wants to make it known by women across the world what gaslighting really is and how to spot it before it's too late. So, it was 2:00 a.m. on the 1st of January of 2021 when the Cherokee Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call in Canton, Georgia. Now, they had received a call from a man who was stating that someone had broken into the home of his ex-wife, and he found her lying face down on her deck with a pillowcase over her head. She had been bound with zip ties, and her back door was open.
>> Somebody broke in [snorts] over here.
>> Let me get this out. I'll help you.
Okay.
>> Now, when paramedics arrived, Rodney Meter was on the front porch. Now, he was showing officers where to go, claiming to be the ex-husband of the victim. The 911 call was heard where the woman in the background, thought to be the ex-wife, was asking her ex-husband not to leave, and he was comforting her before officers arrived. Now, Morgan Mezer was found to have been brutally attacked. Morgan was hanging out with her best friend the evening prior on New Year's Eve named Nicole, but she decided to come home early. She had been home alone that day because her twins, her eight-year-old twins, were hanging out with her sister that night. But now, one of her eyes was swollen shut in black and blue and there was a zip tie still hanging from one of her wrists. She told the police he was choking me, staring at me. However, she said she never saw his face because he had something over it.
She had woken up to a masked intruder in her home standing over her like a soldier with his fists clenched. She screamed and he suddenly ran at her and jumped on top of her. He was carrying a gun and holding a device that appeared to be manipulating his voice. She said that he sounded like Batman. He then struck her multiple times with the gun and she could feel his finger on the trigger and thought that that was it.
She was gone. She started to think about what would happen to her kids. She hadn't yet prepared a will and they wouldn't have a mom. He then strangled her twice to the point of going unconscious. He then zip tied her hands behind her back before essaying her. He asked for her jewelry and any nice stuff she had as well as her cell phone and the passcode. A pillowcase was then placed over her head and he began working with her cell phone. She didn't know what he was doing, but that is when he appeared to have turned off the alarms and he opened the back door. He helped her out of bed and took her to the back porch, dumping her on the sofa.
In these life ordeath moments, Morgan was trying to go through her whole life to piece together why this was happening to her. At this point, her attacker told her not to move and not to get up until she heard two honks from a car. Now, she thought that that meant that somebody was sitting outside watching her and so she needed to stay still and not move.
And that's exactly what she did. She thought that the man left and she just laid there terrified and restrained before she heard footsteps coming up.
She thought someone was coming to finish the job. And then she remembered hearing this familiar voice saying, "Oh, baby, what happened? What happened? I'm so sorry." and she was shocked because that was her exhusband.
Now, he appeared to be shocked at what she looked like in that state. But now, officers were there. They were looking through the home and they found that the only thing that appeared to have been stolen was her cell phone. However, this was around 2:00 a.m. It was in the middle of the night for most people who would be sleeping. But Rodney had happened to show up at the perfect time to help his ex that night. Now, he was only actually 12 minutes away at his own apartment, and he would tell police that he was getting ready for bed. He was in the bathroom brushing his teeth when he heard knocking on his window. He heard a voice and what he believed to be the word Morgan. He tried calling his ex-wife. She didn't answer. And he got this bad feeling. So, he decided to head over there just to check on her. And that's when he found her restrained on the back porch and immediately called the police. He told them, "Even though we're not married, I'm supposed to try to protect her." You see, Morgan was living on her own at this time with her twins, and before that, she had been married to Rodney for the past decade.
She had met Rodney when she was 14, and he was 17, saying it was love at first sight. Their relationship progressed quickly with Rodney treating Morgan like a princess. They were together for the next seven years. And when Morgan was 21 years old and Rodney was 24, they got married in 2009.
Eight months later, they were still in their honeymoon phase when tragedy struck. Rodney's younger brother, Kevin, lost his battle with leukemia. Rodney took this extremely hard, and he began to really rely on Morgan. He was constantly with her. But they got pregnant with a boy the next year and this really raised their spirits and they knew what they would name him. They named their son Kevin. He was born with a congenial heart defect and he only lived for 18 days. Devastated, it would be 3 months later that Morgan would find out she was pregnant again. This time with twins. In 2012, they had healthy twins, a baby boy and a baby girl. They were such a happy family. Rod was working many jobs, including being a day trader for himself. He was doing well.
Morgan was starting her own interior design business, and it was blowing up.
This was called Shiplap and Sugar, and it was so successful that she ended up hiring a business partner to help her out with all of this. But when the twins were about a year old, Rodney would actually lose his job. And this was quite the strain for the family. But Morgan's business was still blooming.
She believed that everything would be fine. However, this is when Rod began to change from the person he was to an entirely different monster. Many had no idea what was going on behind closed doors, and if they did, they didn't believe her. Morgan filed for divorce in 2020, and by that December, it was finalized. Morgan was starting her life over. She was very happy. However, due to their twins, Rodney and Morgan were still in contact, but they were friendly. They had to basically put their best foot forward to be co-parents and that's what they were doing. Or so Morgan thought. So Sergeant Livers and Sergeant Robert Hugh were the first to be at the scene and they spoke to Morgan and Rod. One of the first things Rod was telling them was that they should be doing their effing jobs. He was basically sitting there waiting for them to show up talking to other officers and he got really upset with them. They were surprised by this. But then they went to talk to Morgan. And seeing her eyes swollen shut, the sergeants immediately believed that whoever did this was mad.
It was personal. It was an emotional attack. Morgan was terrified enough to lay still on her back porch for what was determined to be 40 minutes, feeling that that attacker was still watching her before her ex-husband showed up to help. But Morgan's attack did not happen even one month after her finalized divorce. And while alone with officers, Morgan would tell them further details about her attack. She told them that her attacker said, "You're going to miss your husband." She didn't know why or how this person knew she was getting divorced, but she immediately responded, "No, don't hurt my husband. I love him very much." But she said that the mood in the room changed after this. Morgan said that it was really strange the first thought that popped in her head that it could be her ex because they still saw each other often. In fact, Rodney had slept over previously that week sleeping on her couch. You see, this was due to him calling her earlier that week, telling her that he had pancreatic cancer. She rushed over to see him, told him that she would always be there for him, and he showed her the doctor's note and said that nobody else knew yet. he was upset and so she let him sleep over so he wasn't alone. And when he stayed with her, that was the same week of the attack. Now, she said that at that time he began begging her to get back together with him, but she said no. However, it continued. By December 31st, which was New Year's Eve, she told him that he should share his cancer diagnosis with his parents so that they could help support him as well. He refused. And so Morgan said that he needed to leave her home. He did so, but he did not leave her alone. The entire day he was texting Morgan, begging for reconciliation. He told her that he would make enough money so that she could quit her job. Morgan ended that conversation by telling him that she was staying at her parents house that night of New Year's Eve and that she was turning her phone off. She said that that evening, however, Rod sent her a photo of a check written out to her for $56,000 and said it was underneath her porch.
She then got footage from her front doorbell camera showing Rod coming and putting this on her porch. So Morgan ended up returning home that night, took the check, put it on the kitchen counter, and then she went to bed. Now, after her attack mere hours later, that check was nowhere to be found. So Morgan said that she was skeptical when her ex-husband came and found her at just the right time to save her. And investigators share they had the same suspicion. She told them she sensed it was Rod when the attacker actually took her out of her bed to bring her onto the back deck. It was done in the same exact way that Rod had done so when she was pregnant with the twins. Now, she did not say a word to him about this because she didn't know what he would do if she knew it was him.
>> Thought it was him. When you say him, you're talking about your ex-husband.
>> Mhm. [clears throat] >> Wasn't going to let him know that I knew it was him. So, if he did, then I didn't know what he was going to do.
>> But the sergeants immediately believed her and stated that they believed the same. I >> thought it was kind of interesting that he called out your name as he's walking around side of your house.
>> Yes. It's like, why would you think I was outside?
>> This was a feeling that she had not had in her entire marriage. Security footage was found from the home and it was obtained and it showed Rodney going to the front door first and then he rang the doorbell. No one answered so he headed to the back calling her name. He found her in restraints and ended up helping her out of those before sitting next to her, holding her and consoling her before officers arrived. However, prior to that, the footage was erased and this was believed to be why the person stole the cell phone from Morgan in order to erase what happened before the attack and how that attacker got inside. This is when Rod was asked why he would still go to Morgan's house in the middle of the night even though she had told him over text that she would be at her parents' home. He said that it was just out of habit. But at this point, investigators seized Rod's cell phone, and he knew that the officers were weary of him at this point.
Continued to say that he was telling the truth. Quick search of his cell phone inside of a hidden folder would expose photos of Morgan, partially nude, as well as fully nude, and it appeared as though she had no idea these photos were being taken. There were also photos in the hidden folder that showed messages between Morgan and another male. And of course, these two were separated at this time. You see, Rodney Metzer had not just grown up during his marriage to Morgan. He had not gone from a teen to a regular adult. He changed into an abusive husband, both mentally and physically. Morgan remembered that one time on Labor Day weekend, he had just lost his job. They were celebrating Labor Day on the boat with some friends.
They had a cabin that they went back to alone and they got into an argument and there he would beat her for the first time. She immediately called her father to come and get her. But Rod was making everyone believe that she was to blame for her own injuries, that she was out of control and couldn't keep her temper and was wailing all over the place. He claimed that he got hurt while trying to forcefully restrain her so she didn't hurt herself. He had no marks on him, but all of their friends were on his side and stopped talking to Morgan after this. The isolation began and so did what Morgan would later find to be gaslighting. Everything seemed to be her fault. But all she knew at that time was that Rod would insist that everything began with her, that it was all in her head, and as the twins began getting older, he began using them in his gaslighting as well. Morgan explained a time when Rod rolled himself down the stairs, pretended to be hurt, looked at the children, and said, "Look, mommy pushed me down the stairs. Can you believe that?" There was essay occurring as well. Though Morgan did not recognize it at the time due to the fact that this was technically her husband, but regardless, he did not listen when she had told him over and over again. The answer was no. The divorce was the first time that her friends, who actually stuck with her, would see her have peace in a very long time. But in her worst fears, she didn't imagine that he would try to gaslight her one last time into getting back with him. Except this time, she saw right through it, and so did the police. In fact, they believed that he had created this entire scheme in order to become the hero and win her back.
Even though we're not married, I'm supposed to try to protect her. I know what I know. I'm telling my truth.
Telling my truth. There's no way in hell somebody knocked on your window and said her name and you immediately come over here because you're going to check on her and she happens to be bound in a pillowcase over her head by a man who is disguising his voice. So, while still at the residence, Sergeant Lvers told Rod that he did not have permission to have the photos that he had in his phone and that Morgan was baffled that he had them. Right then and there, they took Rodney into custody for invasion of privacy. Rod stated, "People make mistakes, man." And he could not believe that they were arresting him.
>> You're kidding me. No, not kidding. Not a joke. But they began working quickly while he was in custody to obtain clues and evidence so that he could not destroy it. Investigators found that Morgan's home security system had been tampered with. The basement window actually had an alarm on it that had been removed from the window and put on the window sill, so it still appeared as though it was making contact. The screen had been removed. However, investigators theorized that Rod had done this when he was staying at her house prior. And while Rod had allegedly written a $56,000 check to Morgan, he was found to have not nearly as much in his bank accounts, he was broke. While in custody, search warrants were issued for his car and his apartment. Inside, investigators found a bag of zip ties. Some had been prelooped to be placed on wrists. And there was also a portion of his zip tie, which was the tail, and it was tested against the head that was found at Morgan's house.
And it was found to be an exact match.
But also in his apartment, they found a book called Seven Ways to Be Her Hero. A book that talks to guys and the ways guys talk. This book was said to give quite candidly seven very doable actions to transform any marital relationship.
guaranteed. It also includes a bonus chapter for guys to read with their wives. So, if you want to understand some simple ways to invest in your marriage and be your wife's hero, again, this is the plan. Upon further examination, it appeared as though this book was harmless and marital advice, but it appeared as though this man had taken this as a guide to gaslighting.
While the book was saying that love requires a plan and some learned skills, Rod was planning and learning his own ways to attack his wife, make her the victim so that she would need him as a hero. And his motive was the idea of being his own victim's hero. on his computer. His search history consisted of how to change your voice, how long to choke somebody unconscious, how long until you starve to death, how to crack an iPhone password, how to get sympathy from your ex, cancer diagnosis letters.
They then found evidence that showed that the doctors know that Morgan was shown about Rod's cancer had been forged. Now, they believed he was not sick at all. Yet another lie that he had spun in the story for his ex-wife. They did find however a suicide note and inside of his vehicle they found a handgun. Now investigators were able to scan the bag of zip ties found at his apartment that told them that it was sold at Lowe's. There were two in the county and they went to each and started searching transactions. They were able to locate store security video at Lowe's showing Rod buying the same exact zip ties on December 30th about 36 hours prior to the attack with his debit card.
While everyone else was wearing a mask in his store due to COVID, he was not.
You could see him perfectly. Prior to the attack at CCTV at his apartment, this showed him coming home from the attack in a hurry, looking disheveled, and he left a few minutes later wearing different clothes and carrying a plastic bag at around 1:24 in the morning. So, 2 days later, while still in custody, Rodney was questioned about his health and he was confronted with the cancer diagnosis. He stated that he wouldn't talk to them anymore and got a really bad feeling. Then he began to do something that showed more about himself than he realized. His need for control.
You see, he had told the sergeants that he learned something about them while watching them. He said that Liars was agitated and when he was, he scratched himself. Liars said he was not agitated.
Rod admitted to wanting to change his voice, but he said that it was not manly enough, and that's the only reason he was doing it. When they pressed him on zip ties, he had no idea what zip ties that they were talking about. And then he started saying that something funny was going on.
>> This this cancer thing.
>> I don't know if I should talk to you guys anymore. I'm starting to get really bad at feeling what angle you guys are going.
>> Has there been a time recently where you were interested in how you can change the sound of your voice?
>> Maybe.
>> Tell me about that.
>> I felt like I wasn't [clears throat] voice wasn't manly enough. The uh most significant thing that we found in your apartment was a collection of zip ties.
>> Zip ties.
>> Black zip ties.
>> I don't have zip ties. I know you don't.
We have them now. These are identical to the ones that were binding Morgan's wrist.
>> This is starting to get swirly.
>> And we compared that microscopically to the zip ties that were on Morgan's wrist when the deputies found her. And wouldn't you know it, it is a perfect cut.
>> You thought you could get away with this, didn't you?
>> There's something funny going on here.
It's >> not who I am. That this did not happen.
I did not do this.
>> It appeared as though his idea of what reality was was the only reality that he was willing to face. He said, "It's sickening to me that this is happening to her, and it's sickening to me that y'all think I would do this." Then before the charges were officially filed, he told the police, "I'm a very kind, gentle man. Like, I don't have an angry bone in my body." However, thankfully, they had enough evidence that they did not need a confession from him. He was charged with 10 counts, including home invasion, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and sexual battery.
Morgan told investigators that she thought she was dead, but part of her was not going to let herself die. She wanted to fight for her kids.
One of the scariest things I have that voice still to this day just haunts me when I sleep. And I was like, "This is it. I'm I'm gone." And he decided to strangle me two times. One to the point where I was I barely had any breath left. Um I thought it was going to be my last breath. On the way out, he just kept saying, "You know, you messed up. You're really going to you're going to be fine, but we can't say that about your ex-husband. You're really going to miss him. Instantly hear Rod's voice going, "Oh, baby, what happened? What happened?
I'm so sorry." Did he want you to think that he was the hero?
>> Mhm. He was extremely shocked by the what I looked like, but not a shock of, "Oh my gosh, who did this to you?" But oh my gosh, look what I just did to her.
>> That int >> I really think he thought he was going to still be able to get away with it.
But Rodney's mother, so her ex-mother-in-law, Kathy Metser, was called by Rod while Rod was in jail after he was charged. And he was saying to her, "Why is she doing this to me?
She knows it wasn't me." Kathy did not think that Rod was capable, but Rod also would not let her even visit in prison.
You know, it is known that these sort of people that live under this facade, when they are exposed, they try to hide that from the world. And the people who do expose them, they will have the ultimate hatred for. Assistant District Attorney Rachel Ashie prosecuted this case, stating, "This man is a master manipulator. In the days leading up to this attack, he faked a cancer diagnosis in an attempt to gain sympathy from his ex-wife." When that didn't work, he created a convoluted plan that the investigators in this case and our office truly believe involved a plot to kill her and then himself. When he couldn't go through with that plan, he instead devised a new plan to rescue her. Fortunately, sheriff's office investigators saw through this scheme and quickly arrested the defendant. Now, Rachel Ash also spoke with the survivor about the possibility of a plea deal in order to move forward quickly without a trial. Now, she said that there was overwhelming evidence connecting him to this case, but Morgan agreed to the plea deal and then Rod immediately pleaded guilty to 14 counts, including kidnapping and aggravated assault. He was immediately sentenced to 25 years on a 70-year sentence, meaning he would have to serve 25 years, but then he would be on probation for another 45.
Morgan stated that it's like a death.
She lost her husband. He's dead to her.
that Rod really thought that he was going to get away with it.
>> It's something I can't even describe. I married this man thinking he was my forever. I loved him. But Rachel Ashy said that in a lot of domestic violence cases, you don't see this kind of sentencing, but he did something so heinous and egraious that had he not agreed to the plea deal, he would have been facing more time. This is a classic example of how the most dangerous time for the domestic violence victim is when she decides to leave an abusive relationship.
And even after the sentencing and the closure that Morgan needed, the gaslighting that she experienced throughout her entire marriage left her confused on whether she was even seeing the evidence clearly, whether the police were seeing it clearly. She started to convince herself that maybe it wasn't him, that she could not believe that they were actually doing this to him, and that he couldn't hurt her. She had been told the entire time that she was the toxic one. But the thing was, gaslighting can be a slow psychological attack that breaks down the trust you have of even yourself and your own memories.
It's a way of controlling someone into doubting their own reality. This term actually comes from two films where a husband tricks his wife by lowering the gas lights in their home to basically convince her she's going insane. And while that sounds like a funny little trick, this can be something psychologically damaging in horrific ways. The official definition of gaslighting is a form of persistent psychological manipulation and emotional abuse where a perpetrator makes someone question their own reality, memories, or perceptions. It is used to gain power and control, causing the victim to become confused, lose self-esteem, and rely on their abuser. But while Morgan was still suffering from what had happened to her, from what she had survived, she gave her impact statement bravely to the court and to Rod. She said, "Rod, not only will this statement be to my attacker, but it'll also be my last words to whom I thought was the love of my life. Last four years, being married to you was like living with a monster that constantly tried to break me down and fence me in. It was a blessing in disguise. [music] I can now walk with a confidence knowing the pain you have given me is turned into power.
Now Morgan is focusing on raising her twins and she's also raising awareness for narcissism and gaslighting. She wants to help women realize that they're in this sort of situation before it's too late, before it gets too bad. She's not only done interviews for 48 hours, but she's helped with a Lifetime film inspired by her story called Gaslit by My Husband. It's now on Netflix. in honor of this survivor and her wish to spread the word about gaslighting and to name some signs that can mean that you are being gaslit. This can be things such as questioning if you really mean what you said, questioning your motives, questioning your love for somebody, questioning your ability to perform simple tasks, questioning your own reality. If someone is convincing you that the problem isn't a problem or lying even when there is proof that you are bringing them, they can also project their own behaviors onto you and make you believe that you're the one doing so. Their ultimate goal is to break down your trust and instincts that you naturally have, especially if you're a woman. I feel like women are extremely gifted with intuition. So, if I can tell you anything, it's hold on to that intuition like it can save your life. Do you believe that Rod planned to kill his ex-wife? What went wrong in that moment?
Or was it the moment where Morgan was talking about where she had said, you know, "No, don't hurt my husband. I love my husband." That he suddenly decided he wasn't actually going to kill her, that maybe he had a chance if he just pretended to be her hero. Is that the point where it switched from a murder to an attack? Or was he always just going to go in there with this plan to win her back and to manipulate her reality to make himself the hero once again? I think it's quite disgusting that he had this book, Seven Ways to Be Her Hero, because while that can be wonderful marriage advice, he had the opportunity to be a good husband and to be her hero since they were young.
And yet, he did the one thing that can't be forgiven. And he abused her in so many different ways. And when she finally got away, that's when he decided that he wanted to be a better person, to look like a better person. I just feel like in his convoluted mind, he truly started piecing this together as his guide to win her back. that reality that he was creating that was not in any way real had thankfully been broken long enough with Morgan getting away from him with divorcing him that she was able to see through it this time. And it's no fault of her own that she couldn't see it the first time. But I believe that that's probably why she wants so many women to and men, this can happen to men too, to know what gaslighting is.
Because if you don't know it, it can be something that is extremely hard to understand. You start thinking that you are the issue. You are the problem and you are not. You are not. It is not your fault. And even if they start making you feel that way, that's exactly what they want. And the power that you have there is to take that back and tell them, I see through everything you're doing.
This is not reality. It may be your version of events, but that doesn't mean it's the truth. You know, gaslighting is something that can happen not only with just romantic relationships, but with friendships, with family dynamics. You know, these master manipulators, they know what they're doing. So, it is the only thing we can do to also know exactly what they're doing. Even if you were too scared to stand up to them in that moment and say, "No, I know the truth." You know, in your heart, in your soul, in your gut, that intuition is telling you, h this is gaslighting.
And that can save your life. And it breaks my heart that Morgan went years with everybody blowing her off, believing his side, taking his version of events as truth. As someone with CPTTSD who was not believed for many years, there is just something deeply deeply infuriating to me about that. And I truly hope that Morgan feels heard now and is never put in that situation again where no one believes her. We need to believe women. We need to believe victims. I'm so thankful I came across this story and was able to inform maybe one of you out there who doesn't know about gaslighting or put it in a new perspective that made it easier to understand for you. I did so for Morgan Metzer because that is something she is passionate about. Please send her all the love down below and she is an incredible survivor and I hope her and her twins are living happy, healthy lives today. And I'm so glad that Rodney Mzer is in prison where he will hopefully never be able to hurt anyone again. However, he will be out in 25 years. So don't forget to speak up. Your voice is powerful enough. And I love you to absolute pieces. Okay, bye.
