Myocardial infarction (heart attack) is defined as the death of heart muscle cells due to oxygen deprivation, and is categorized into five types: Type 1 (sudden coronary artery blockage by plaque rupture and thrombosis), Type 2 (supply-demand mismatch where oxygen supply decreases or demand increases due to conditions like anemia, pneumonia, or pulmonary embolism), Type 3 (sudden cardiac death before biomarkers can be measured), Type 4 (MI associated with PCI or CABG procedures), and Type 5 (MI associated with CABG procedures). The most common cause worldwide is atherosclerosis, accounting for approximately 90% of cases, with risk factors including age, smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, and chronic stress.
