[00:00:00]A soldier kept fighting World War II for 29 years after it ended. His name was Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese intelligence officer sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines in 1944. His orders, fight, never surrender. [music] Then 1945 came, Japan surrendered, the war was over. Nobody told Onoda. For nearly three decades he [music] hid deep in the jungle, raided villages, survived on bananas and rice he stole in the dark, evaded every search party [music] sent to find him. The Philippine government dropped leaflets saying the war was over. He thought it was enemy propaganda. It took his actual commanding officer flown in from Japan in 1974 to personally stand in front of him and order him to stop. Onoda walked out of that jungle in full uniform, weapons cleaned [music] and ready. He hadn't failed his mission. He'd never received the order to end it.
