International Security Forum starts in Moscow today

In total, organizers say more than 125 delegations from over 100 countries and international organizations will attend, highlighting Russia's push to deepen ties beyond its traditional allies. But beyond the numbers, analysts say African participation is driven by clear priorities. Security cooperation tops the list including counterterrorism, military training, and arms partnerships, particularly for countries facing insurgencies, armed groups, and regional instability. There is also a strong economic dimension. Delegations are seeking investment, energy partnerships, and alternatives to Western financing, especially as many governments are looking to diversify their international ties. Analysts note that many African states are pursuing what they call a more balanced foreign policy, working with Russia, China, and Western partners simultaneously to maximize leverage and avoid overdependence from anyone. A key moment comes on the 27th of May when Russia's Foreign Ministry holds a dedicated briefing on the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, where officials are expected to outline concrete cooperation projects and future initiatives. The forum will also include meetings with BRICS and other regional groupings, reinforcing efforts to build what Russian officials describe as more equitable global security architecture.
