Added:The power goes out just after 9 at night. Outside, the wind is pushing snow sideways across the yard. Inside, Jon's house still feels warm. The furnace has stopped, but he can't feel the difference yet. He tells himself he has time. Maybe he'll put on another sweater. Maybe the power will return before the temperature drops enough to matter. But the house has already started cooling. Heat is moving through the walls, windows, and roof. Cold air is finding its way through gaps around doors and window frames. None of it makes a sound. For a while, the room still feels almost normal. That's what makes the first few hours so easy to waste. Jon settles into his usual chair facing the television. He's used that chair for 15 years. It feels familiar, comfortable, and safe. It's also beside a large window beneath a high ceiling and only a few feet from an open staircase. The room that feels safest may be the hardest room in the house to keep warm. After 65, waiting until you feel severely cold can mean waiting too long. Your body may not recognize the danger as quickly as it once did.

In that sense, the house works a little like a battery storing a charge. When the furnace stops, that stored warmth begins moving toward colder areas. Some heat passes through the ceiling, roof, walls, and windows. Warm indoor air escapes through small gaps while colder outdoor air enters through those same openings.
Insulation slows this process and gives you more time. It can't stop heat loss completely. How quickly a home cools depends on the weather, wind, insulation, air leaks, windows, house size, and room design. A small, wellsealed home may remain comfortable far longer than a large house with old windows and high ceilings. There's no single countdown that applies to every home. That's why the actual indoor temperature matters more than guessing how many hours you have left. The thermostat also tells only part of the story. Your body exchanges heat with everything around you. Sit beside a cold window and warmth moves from your body toward the colder glass. Rest your feet on a cold floor and heat moves through your shoes and socks. A bed, chair, or exterior wall that has been cooling for hours can make you feel much colder.
Even when the thermostat still shows a temperature somewhere in the 60s, drafts make the problem worse. Cold air entering around a window or beneath a door doesn't need to be strong enough to move a curtain. A small steady leak can make the area around your chair or bed noticeably colder.
Room design matters, too. In a room with a high ceiling or open staircase, warm air can collect above you or drift upstairs instead of staying around the chair or bed. That's exactly what's happening in John's living room. His chair [music] is beside a large window.

Wide openings connect the room to the kitchen and hallway. Without realizing it, Jon has chosen one of the hardest spaces in the house to protect.
Point two, why the low 60s matter.
After 65, getting cold faster isn't a personal weakness. It's one of the changes that can come with age. Changes in circulation, metabolism, muscle mass, and the body's response to temperature can make it harder to generate and hold warmth. Some medical conditions and medications can also affect how the body responds to cold or how quickly a person recognizes the danger. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether any medication you take increases your cold weather risk.
Movement matters, too.
During an outage, people often sit still to conserve energy or avoid walking through a dark house. But muscles generate heat when they move. Long periods of sitting can make the cold affect you sooner. The National Institute on Aging recommends keeping the home at 68° or warmer when possible.
It also warns that indoor temperatures between 60 and 65° can put an older adult at risk of hypothermia.
There's no single temperature that forces everyone to leave. But once the room reaches the low 60s and keeps falling, you should already be preparing your next move. Don't wait for your body to make the decision for you. Shivering means your body is trying to produce more heat. Move to a warmer area, replace damp clothing, and begin warming yourself right away. If the shivering won't stop, or if you notice fumbling hands, loss of coordination, confusion, slurred speech, unusual drowsiness, or difficulty staying awake, get emergency medical help. Don't wait to see whether those symptoms pass. Cold can affect judgment. Someone becoming hypothermic may not understand how serious the situation has become. That's why you need an indoor thermometer and a plan made while you're still warm enough to think clearly. Across the room, Max is curled into a tight ball on the rug, even with his thick coat. John finally looks at the thermometer. The number is falling.
Point three. Stop trying to heat the whole house.
John's first instinct is to stay in the living room. It's where he spends most evenings. His chair is comfortable. The television, family photos, and familiar belongings make it feel like the natural place to wait. But familiarity doesn't make the room efficient. A large room with high ceilings, exterior walls, big windows, and several open doorways needs far more heat than a small enclosed room.

A small heater may warm the air immediately around it. It won't easily warm a large room filled with cold surfaces and connected to the rest of the house. Blankets can keep Jon warmer.
They can't heat the kitchen, hallway, staircase, and living room at the same time.
John doesn't have to leave his house yet, but he may need to stop living in all of it. He needs one room that's easier to protect, safe to move around in, and close to everything he'll need during the night.
Point four, the sixpoint warm room test.
The smallest room isn't automatically the best choice. A closet may be small, but it could be difficult to enter with a walker and dangerous if there's no usable exit. A bathroom may have few windows, but tile floors, tight spaces, and a bathtub can increase the chance of falling.
Use six questions to choose the room.
First, can you reach it without using stairs? A dark staircase becomes more dangerous when you're cold, tired, carrying supplies, or using a cane or walker.
Second, is it close to a bathroom?
Repeated trips through a cold house at night waste warmth and increase the risk of a fall.
Third, does it have limited exposure to the outdoors? A room with fewer exterior walls, doors, and large windows is usually easier to keep warm, but it still needs a usable exit. Never choose a closet, storage room, or sealed space that could trap you during a fire or medical emergency. Keep the main exit clear, and know a second way out when possible.
Fourth, is there enough room to move safely? You need space for a walker or cane, a sturdy chair, somewhere to sleep, medication, water, and any pets staying with you. Fifth, can you keep the walking path clear? Loose rugs, blankets, cords, bags, pet bowls, and supplies shouldn't block the route to the door. Sixth, can the room support your medical needs? Think about medication schedules, medical oxygen, CPAP, backup power, mobility devices, and any other equipment you may need during the night.
Jon thinks through the rooms he knows best. The living room is too open. The bathroom is too tight for his walker.
The basement requires stairs and feels damp. A small bedroom near the bathroom has one window, one door, enough room for his walker, and a clear route out.
That becomes his warm room.
Point five, build the warm zone and warm your body.
Start by slowing the heat loss you can control. Close doors to rooms you're no longer using. This reduces air movement and keeps more of the remaining warmth near the area you've chosen. Close curtains and blinds after dark. Move the chair, bed, or sleeping area away from windows and exterior walls. Place a rolled towel or draft stopper beneath the drafty door. It won't seal the room completely, but it can reduce cold air moving near the floor. Use a firmly secured non-slip mat beneath your feet.
Don't place a loose blanket, throw rug, cord, or pet supply in the walking path.
Change wet or damp socks and clothing immediately before the room gets colder.
Gather everything you may need. Bring in your medication, glasses, water, phone, power bank, flashlight, battery, radio, indoor thermometer, simple snacks, and a written list of important phone numbers.
Keep pet food, water, medication, and a leash nearby.
Make sure the leash and bowls aren't blocking the exit. You're simply making one room easier to use and easier to keep warm. Once the room is ready, focus on your own body. Wear several dry, loose layers. Air trapped between the layers helps hold warmth. Start with a dry layer next to your skin, then add warmer clothing over it.
Wear dry socks and shoes or slippers with insulated non-slip soles. Cover exposed areas with a soft hat and warm clothing. Use a sleeping bag or dry blankets around your body. Place a mattress, sleeping pad, or folded bedding beneath you. If the bed or floor feels cold, sit in a sturdy chair instead of directly on the floor. If your health allows it, gentle movement can help you produce heat. Slowly move your arms and legs, flex your hands, or walk briefly within the clear area of the room. Don't exercise hard enough to sweat. Damp clothing can cool you quickly once you stop moving. Give pets a dry bed or secured mat that keeps them away from the cold floor. Keep them in the same warm area unless there's a safety reason not to.
John now has his medication, water, light, phone, thermometer, and blankets within reach. Max is settled beside the bed. The bedroom isn't as warm as it was before the outage, but Jon is using far less space and losing less heat. Now he has to make sure the method he uses for backup heat doesn't create a second emergency.
Point six, safe backup heat. Never run a generator inside a home, garage, basement, shed, or partly enclosed space. Keep it outdoors more than 20 ft from windows, doors, and vents with the exhaust pointed away from the home.
Never use a charcoal grill, barbecue, camp stove, gas oven, or stove top to heat an indoor space. These devices can produce carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide has no color and no smell. Confusion and sleepiness may appear before you realize anything is wrong.
Candles and candle lanterns shouldn't be used for heat. They provide very little warmth compared with the risk of fire, burns, and ignition near bedding or clothing. Use batterypowered lighting instead. Only use a heater specifically approved for indoor use. Follow every instruction from the manufacturer. If it burns fuel, follow all ventilation requirements and never use it without a working carbon monoxide alarm.
Keep the heater on a flat, stable surface with at least 3 ft of clear space around it. Curtains, blankets, clothing, furniture, and pet bedding must stay away.
Plug an electric space heater directly into a wall outlet. Don't use a power strip or extension cord during an outage. An electric heater only helps when a properly installed backup power system can safely support it.
Never improvise a connection between a generator, heater, and home wiring.
Turn the heater off before sleeping or leaving the room. Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas.
They need working batteries or battery backup so they'll continue operating when the power fails. If you use medical oxygen, keep it at least 5 ft from heaters and other heat sources. Never smoke or use an open flame nearby and follow any stricter distance rules from your oxygen supplier.
Point seven. When staying home stops being the safer choice.
A warm room can buy you time, but it doesn't make every outage safe to wait out indefinitely.
Watch the temperature instead of relying only on how cold you feel. Keep an indoor thermometer in the room and check it regularly. Write down the readings if that helps you see the pattern. A room falling from 67 to 64 to 61° is telling you more than a single number. Once the temperature reaches the low 60s and continues falling, start preparing to leave before the roads, darkness, fatigue, or worsening weather make the trip harder. Contact family, a neighbor, local emergency services, or a warming center while your phone works and you're still thinking clearly. Leave earlier if the warm room can't hold its temperature, the safe heater, or alarms stop working. Backup power for medical equipment is running low, or you're becoming short on medication, water, or other essentials.
John already knows where he'll go if the bedroom keeps cooling. His daughter's house still has power. He's written her number and the address of the nearest warming center on paper beside his phone. He doesn't need to invent the plan while he's cold, tired, and in the dark. If confusion, slurred speech, loss of coordination, unusual drowsiness, or difficulty staying awake appears, get emergency medical help immediately.
