Carthage, founded in 814 BC on a North African peninsula, was one of the most magnificent ancient cities with a population of half a million people, featuring two harbors (a commercial port trading across three continents and a circular military harbor housing 220 warships), 37 km of massive walls, stables for 300 war elephants, barracks for 20,000 soldiers, and multi-story apartment buildings. After 120 years of conflict through three Punic Wars, Rome destroyed Carthage in 146 BC after 17 days of brutal street-by-street fighting, killing or enslaving the population, razing the city to the ground, and cursing the site so nothing would ever be built there again, effectively erasing this civilization from history.

The City Rome Erased From History | Carthage ExplainedAñadido:
Before Rome destroyed it, Carthage was one of the most magnificent cities the ancient world had ever seen. Founded 814 BC, older than Rome itself. Half a million people living on a peninsula in North Africa. Two harbors, a rectangular commercial port trading gold, silver, and exotic animals across three continents, and a circular military harbor that could house 220 warships simultaneously, each one in its own covered birth. The city walls were 37 km long, 12 m high, 9 m thick. Inside, stables for 300 war elephants, barracks for 20,000 soldiers, multi-story apartment buildings up to six floors tall, a hilltop citadel, temples, markets, a senate house. Carthage wasn't just a city, it was a civilization.
Then, Rome came. Three wars, 120 years.
The third and final war ended with 17 days of street-by-street fighting, house-by-house, floor-by-floor, until there was nothing left. The population killed or enslaved, the buildings razed to the ground, the site cursed so nothing would ever be built there again.
Rome didn't just defeat Carthage, it annihilated it. And then, we wrote history so you would never know how magnificent it had been.
