A kingdom Egypt feared, a kingdom scripture named. And that is where we are going next.

There on the eastern bank in the year Moses raised his staff stands a city of 200,000 people. The city's name is Kerma. It is the capital of the kingdom of Kush and its absolute zenith.

[00:12:19]Walk into the heart of that city, you will find yourself standing at the foot of the Western Dufa. A name that sounds strange in English but means simply the great mudbrick mountain. It rises 18 m into the desert sky. A temple of dried Nile mud, the largest mudbrick structure on Earth in its day. The walls are 5 m thick at the base. Inside, ramps spiral upward toward a sanctuary at the summit, where priests of an unwritten religion offer to gods whose names the carbon record has forgotten. Charles Bonnet, the Swiss archaeologist who has spent five decades excavating this site for the University of Geneva and the Sudin Antiquity Service, calls Karma the first true African civilization south of Egypt.

This is the trade tension Egypt cannot stop thinking about. From the moment Egypt becomes Egypt, the relationship with Kush is the central problem of the southern frontier.

[00:15:25]The 12th dynasty built a chain of fortresses at the second cataract. Buhin Mirgisa Semna to bottle Kerma's traffic and tax it. Tutmos I sailed up the Nile and put the head of a Kushite king on the prow of his ship as a warning. And by the year of the parted sea, Tatosa III is launching campaign after campaign southward to hold the line. He has annexed Nubia as a province. He has installed an Egyptian viceroy. But the city of Kerma still stands, still trades, still feeds the Egyptian economy from below. Two African empires locked together at the third cataract. And the slaves walking east out of Gan at the very same hour are walking out of a system that ran the entire continent's economy. That is the scale of what God broke. And it gets deeper. Now open your Bible to Genesis 10. Read with me. And the sons of Ham, Kush, and Misraim, and Fut, and Canaan. Genesis 10 6. The table of nations, the most ancient ethnographic document in the Hebrew cannon. Kush, the firstborn son of Ham. Misraim the second, whose name means Egypt. Foot, Libya, [snorts] Canaan, the southern Levant. The genealogy is not random. It is geographic. Read it as a map and the map snaps into place. Ham is Africa. Kush is the upper Nile. Ms. Ram is the lower Nile. Foot is the Mediterranean coast west of the delta. The Hebrew word Kush, same root as the Egyptian word for the kingdom Tutmosa III is invading. Same root as the Greek word athops, burnt face that the historian Heroditus uses for the people south of Azwan. Same word your King James Bible flattens into Ethiopia because the 17th century translators did not have a better word.

[00:17:40]But the Hebrew word, the word the prophets used, the word Moses himself used was Kush. And Kush meant black. Did you catch that? The Bible itself in its very first genealogy names the kingdom of Kerma as a son of Ham. The same kingdom whose ruins Charles Bonnet is excavating right now. The same population of 200,000 whose mudbrick footprint sits in the Sudin desert. The Bible saw it. The Bible named it. The translators got nervous and softened the word. But the Hebrew never blinked. And then read Numbers 12:1.

[00:18:21]And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married, for he had married an Ethiopian woman. The Hebrew text says Kushite, a Kushite woman. Moses, the man who just led Israel out of Egypt, was married to a daughter of Kush.

[00:18:41]Some scholars argue this is Zippra the Midianite. Others argue this is a second wife taken from the Kushite captives during the wilderness years. Either reading lands you in the same place. The leader of the Exodus is bound by marriage to the same African genealogy that Genesis 10 just laid out. The bloodline runs across the page of the Bible and the bloodline runs through the strata at the third cataract. And the bloodline is one bloodline.

Each is carved as a portrait, a likeness, not a generic figure of what most archaeologists believe to be a specific ruler or ancestor. They wear distinctive helmets, possibly ballgame regalia, possibly warhead dresses, no two alike. And the faces, the faces are what set the academy on edge a century ago, and have not let it rest since. broad noses, full averted lips, wide set eyes, heavy jaws.

Paul is telling the Athenians that God himself set the calendar of every civilization on the planet, that every continent has its appointed hour, that the boundaries of every people are drawn by the same hand.

[00:28:28]And here is what I want you to see. The hour the Lord chose to deliver Israel from Egypt. The hour Moses raised the staff and the sea peeled back and Pharaoh's chariots locked their wheels in mud. That hour was not a private hour. That hour was the hour of a synchronized world. While the wind from God's nostrils piled the Red Sea up like a wall on the right hand and on the left, hands a hemisphere away in the jungle of Lventa were chiseling identity into basalt.

Pause and reflect on that because we are not done with the canvas yet. We have walked through Africa and across the Atlantic, but the synchronized hour reached across the Pacific, too. [music] The synchronized hour reached the Aian. The synchronized hour reached the Indis. The synchronized hour reached the standing stones on the Salsbury plane. And the next continent we step onto is going to make this picture even bigger. Now turn east. Step over the Pacific in the same imagined hour into the Yellow River Valley of North Central China. The year is still 1446 BC. The dynasty in power is the Shang and the archaeological phase the Chinese callerang named after a site near Jung Joe runs roughly from 1500 to,300 BC. That window swallows your year hole. Walk into the Erligang capital and you are inside a walled city that covers nearly seven square kilometers.

A construction technique called hang two packed by gangs of laborers swinging wooden malls in rhythmic chants that echo for kilometers across the lowest plane. Inside the walls, the ruling clan lives in courtyard compounds. Outside the walls, bronze foundaries are smelting copper, tin, and lead into the most sophisticated alloy the world has yet seen.

This is liturgy in bronze. And then there are the oracle bones. By the late heir gang horizon, slipping into the anyang phase that follows. Shang divers are taking the shoulder blades of cattle and the plans of turtles, applying a heated bronze rod to small drilled pits on the underside and reading the cracking pattern as a yes or no answer from the high god Shangdi or from the deceased ancestors.

All of it is still standing. The civilization is in twilight, but it is still a light and the climate is changing. On the Salsbury plane in southern Britain, Stonehenge is already 1,600 years old in the year of the parted sea. Read that again. The standing stones were already older to Moses than the temple of Solomon will be to you tonight.

[00:39:50]And Psalm 24:1 says it cleanly. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof. The world and they that dwell therein. All of it. Not Israel only, not Egypt only, the earth, the fullness, the world, they that dwell therein, every civilization in this synchronized hour was his to set the calendar of, and he set every calendar. The Exodus was not a local story. The Exodus was the local detail of a global act. And now I have to ask you, why did your school never tell you this? Why were you never told?

[00:40:29]Sit with that question for a moment because the answer has a name and the name has a date and the date is more recent than you think.

[00:40:38]In 1822, the Prussian philosopher Gayorg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, one of the most influential thinkers in the modern western university, delivered a series of lectures at the University of Berlin titled the philosophy of history. The lectures were published after his death and became required reading in nearly every European and American history department for the next century and a half.

[00:41:04]Inside those lectures is one of the most damaging single sentences ever written about the African continent. Hegel said and I quote, "Africa proper as far as history goes back has remained for all purposes of connection with the rest of the world. Shut up. It is the gold land compressed within itself, the land of childhood which lying beyond the day of self-conscious history is enveloped in the dark mantle of night. End quote.

[00:41:34]Africa, Hegel said, has no history.

[00:41:37]Africa is sleeping. Africa is the land of childhood. Africa does not move. Read that lie again with the city of Kerma standing in your mind. 200,000 people.

[00:42:57]So the academy chose Hegel and shut Africa's mouth. Hegel did not work alone. The 19th century academy built an entire framework around his lie called the hemitic hypothesis. The hypothesis claimed that any sophisticated culture found anywhere south of the Sahara, great Zimbabwe, the N terracottas, the Epha bronzes, the Axomite steelli, even the Egyptian dynasties themselves could not possibly have been built by black Africans.

[00:43:46]C.G. Seligman, the British anthropologist, whose textbook Races of Africa was the standard university reference from 1930 well into the 1960s, wrote that the civilizations of Africa are the civilizations of the Hammites.

[00:44:04]He meant the civilizations of Africa are not the civilizations of Africans. The lie wore the clothes of science for 140 years. And do not miss what I am saying.

[00:44:17]I am not attacking individual people. I am attacking a system. The habitic hypothesis was a structure built into the curriculum, into the textbooks, into the museum captions, into the geographic atlases.

[00:44:31]The professors who taught it in the 1950s did not invent it. They inherited it. The students who absorbed it in the 1970s did not consciously choose it.

[00:44:41]They were tested on it. The system propagated like every system that distorts and the only thing that could break the system was a piece of evidence that did not care what the system thought. That piece of evidence arrived in 1949 in a chemistry laboratory at the University of Chicago.

[00:45:01]Willard Frank Libby, an American physical chemist working with the natural carbon 14 isotope, published his first results on radiocarbon dating in 1949. The technique was simple in concept and devastating in implication.

[00:45:17]Every living organism, every plant, every tree, every cow, every human being absorbs atmospheric carbon during life, including a tiny fraction of the radioactive isotope, carbon 14.

[00:45:32]When the organism dies, it stops absorbing. The carbon 14 inside it begins to decay at a known mathematically reliable rate. Half of it is gone in 5,730 years. Measure the ratio of carbon 14 to ordinary carbon 12 in any organic material, wood, bone, charcoal, fiber, and you can calculate with a margin of decades when the organism died.

In 2017, an international team led by researchers at the Max Plank Institute and the University of Tubingan published the first comprehensive genetic study of ancient Egyptian mummies in the journal Nature Communications.
