Bruno Fernandes secured the Premier League assist record with 21 assists in the 2025-26 season, surpassing Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's record of 20, despite controversy over his final assist against Brighton; he responded to Roy Keane's criticism by requesting Keane's phone number to address the false claims about his mindset, while Manchester United reached a verbal agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson for £43 million on a five-year deal, with Marcus Rashford expressing his desire to join Barcelona permanently after a successful loan spell.

Bruno Fernandes receives Premier League assist record trophy despite backlash over final one.
Bruno Fernandes' 21st assist of the Premier League season for Patrick Dorgu's header against Brighton has proven controversial, but the Manchester United has still received an award.
Bruno Fernandes has been presented with a trophy by the Premier League for breaking the record for the number of assists in a single season. Fernandes moved on to 21 on Sunday during Manchester United's 3-0 win over Brighton to surpass Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's tally of 20.
The United captain's corner was headed in by Patrick Dorgu to put the away side 1-0 up. Further goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Fernandes himself secured the three points to see Michael Carrick's side finish the campaign on a high.
Fernandes' final assist has been allowed to stand by the Premier League despite suggestions on social media that it should have been chalked off.
Fans have posted slow-motion replays of Dorgu's goal, which appeared to show the ball hitting the bar and then cannoning over the line off Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, meaning it could have gone down as an own goal.
The Premier League does sometimes retrospectively change goal attributions, but it has not changed anything in this case, allowing Diallo's goal and more importantly Fernandes' assist to stand. The United captain's achievement was rubber-stamped after the game with the Premier League releasing a video on Monday which showed him being delivered a trophy.
Ah, this is a nice trophy. He can be heard saying before posing with it for a photo.
United said in a statement on their website, "Our congratulations go to Bruno, who is into the history books once again.
We couldn't be more proud of your contribution, skip."
The trophy tops a fantastic individual campaign for Fernandes, who was also named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.
The 31-year-old finished with nine goals and 22 assists in 37 games across all competitions for United, who finished third in the Premier League.
Asked by Mirror Football in a recent interview what it meant to join United legends Wayne Rooney, George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Cristiano Ronaldo in winning the FWA award, he said, "I want to achieve everything that those players achieved in terms of winning with the club, but being in their company with this award is massively important for me and I won't hide from that. It will always be the prize for me. That's always what my goal has been.
I've never hidden from that. As I said before, I'm not very good at hiding things.
I speak out whenever I want on what I want to achieve and what I want to achieve is winning the league and winning the Champions League." Fernandes has just 12 months remaining on his current contract, but Carrick is sure he will stay put.
"I've got no reason to think otherwise," he said on Sunday.
"We've loved what he's done and he being here. I think you can see that. He wanted to stay on the pitch. He wants to stay on every single game, because he's enjoying his football, which is fantastic.
Bruno Fernandes accuses Roy Keane of spreading lies about him in brutal response. Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes asked for Roy Keane's phone number following his recent criticism of the Portugal star's attitude in a Premier League match.
Bruno Fernandes has hit back at Roy Keane and revealed he asked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the former Manchester United midfielder's phone number following his recent criticism. Keane accused Fernandes of saying that he had focused on providing an assist to claim the Premier League record, rather than shooting, when the Portugal midfielder had actually said the opposite.
Fernandes, 31, broke the record on the final day of the season after crossing for Patrick Dorgu to head in against Brighton for his 21st assist. The United captain had previously equaled the mark set by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne against Nottingham Forest. It was the match against Forest that had irked Keane during United's last game at Old Trafford for 2025 to 2026. The pundit misconstrued Fernandes' words following the game, however, frustrating the Red Devils star with his lie. "I don't mind criticism," Fernandes said speaking to Steven Bartlett. "I always take criticism from everyone and never reply to anyone whatsoever.
People have an opinion. They think it's good, bad, or whatever.
What I don't like is when people lie about things, and in this case, what you said about Roy Keane, basically, what he said is a lie.
Luckily for me, everything is on record.
Imagine if it wasn't, then people will think Bruno is always the guy going for the assist. I even asked Ole his number to text him to have a word with him to say I don't mind the criticism. I don't like when people lie about the things that I say because this goes over the top of the things I think are acceptable.
Keane had previously vented his frustration on the Stick to Football podcast. The Irishman was frustrated with the club's focus on Fernandes' journey to claim the Premier League assist record for a single season.
When you're the captain of a club and you're supposed to be driving the club forward, do not be getting bogged down by just your role in the team. Just assists, Keane said.
What I heard at United at the weekend, honestly, I was raging with it. The whole chat about his assists, everyone, the players were, the game was about his assists. That's the whole thing.
After the game he got interviewed and he said, "The captain of Manchester United said a few times I probably should have shot, but I made the passes." Wow. How can your mindset be not to win the match, but be about an individual record?
Fernandes helped United finish third in the Premier League this term with the club set to make a return to Champions League football. The talisman has just a single year remaining on his contract, though United do have an option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Michael Carrick expects Fernandes to stay at the club.
"I've got no reason to think otherwise," he said. "We've loved what he's done and he loves being here. I think you can see that." "He wanted to stay on. He wants to stay on every single game because he's enjoying his football, which is fantastic."
Marcus Rashford's transfer stance crystal clear in three-word message after Man United snub. Marcus Rashford's future is currently up in the air, but the England and Manchester United star appears to have made his preference clear.
Marcus Rashford appears to have once again hinted he wants to join Barcelona permanently after a successful loan spell there this season.
The Manchester United forward has been the subject of endless transfer speculation after falling out of favor at Old Trafford under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. Rashford sought greener pastures first with Aston Villa and then with Barcelona. He has starred in Spain scoring 14 goals in all competitions and registering 14 assists on route to the La Liga title. This has been enough to earn him a call up to Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the upcoming World Cup, but where he'll play his club football next season remains a mystery.
It has long been understood that Barcelona can sign Rashford for 26 million pounds, but there has been some back and forth over his fee.
As the season ended, the player also made it clear he would like to stay in Catalonia despite being offered a route back to Manchester.
A snub last week may have hinted at Rashford's true feelings and another social media post could clarify things even further. Rashford played his final match for Barcelona this season on Saturday against Valencia. And a day after the 3-2-1 defeat, he took to Instagram with a poignant message.
He captioned a picture of him in Barcelona gear and a video of him lifting the La Liga trophy.
Always a pleasure. Season 25-26 hungry for more.
The hungry for more appears to confirm Rashford would like to continue what he has started in Spain with a permanent return to Barcelona next term.
Rashford's post comes just days after he caught flak for seemingly snubbing United when thanking coaches and clubs after receiving his three lions World Cup call-up. The 28-year-old took to Instagram and wrote, "Special thanks to Unai Emery, Hansi Flick, Thomas Tuchel, Aston Villa, Barcelona, and England for believing in me when things got tough."
He omitted United from this list and fans caught on, chastising him for failing to acknowledge his boyhood club.
However, the forward cleared things up on X. Rashford responded, "To make my IG story clear, it's not a dig of any sort.
I'm a MU supporter and that remains. I was showing gratitude to the clubs and coaches that I have worked with over the past 18 months. They have played a big role in this England call-up. Last week, he was backed to remain with Barcelona by teammate Frenkie de Jong. Asked if the Englishman should stay, de Jong told Sport, 'Yes, I believe so. In the minutes he's played, he has given us a lot. Goals, assists, depth. He is a fast player who threatens rival defenses. I would be delighted if he continued with us. He arrived here with a lot of enthusiasm. He was very happy to be here and from the first moment he arrived, you could already see that he wanted to stay. He's tried to adapt as best he could and I've seen him do well.' Man United reach transfer agreement after final game as contract details emerge.
Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson with transfer negotiations now underway between the two clubs over a potential 43 million pound deal.
Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement to bring in a new midfielder on a five-year deal. The Premier League season concluded just hours ago with Michael Carrick's side securing a 3-0 victory away to Brighton to finish the campaign strongly. But INEOS are already moving swiftly on transfer business.
With Casemiro officially leaving and Manuel Ugarte potentially following him through the exit door at Old Trafford, there is significant urgency to strengthen the midfield options.
Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount are the only other senior choices in central midfield. With player of the year Bruno Fernandes almost guaranteed to operate in a more advanced position under Carrick.
The Red Devils are poised to recruit extensively in this department and are close to finalizing one acquisition.
TalkSPORT claim that United have secured a verbal agreement with Atalanta star Ederson on a five-year deal with talks between the two clubs progressing over a possible £43 million pound move.
However, they are planning to bring in at least one additional midfielder to the squad this summer with Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson identified as the prime target. With a summer participating in the World Cup ahead of Anderson, he may postpone a decision on his future until the competition concludes. While Manchester City represents a serious rival for any £100 million pound transfer. United are also understood to be interested in West Ham's Matheus Fernandes and Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. While Newcastle would need to lower their valuation of Sandro Tonali before United would consider making an approach.
Further alternatives include Carlos Baleba and Alex Scott. Though Bournemouth are well placed to retain their prized asset having secured Europa League football for next season. Baleba meanwhile enjoyed an inconsistent campaign at Brighton and was left out of the starting lineup for Sunday's final day fixture.
Wolves Joao Gomes had previously been on United's radar. However, he looks set to finalize a transfer to Atletico Madrid.
Carrick has already urged INEOS to back Mainoo in the transfer window.
Following the signing of his permanent contract at Old Trafford, the head coach said, "I mean, there's a balance.
There's a balance as a football club because you're not necessarily, whenever it is, bringing a player in just to play with one player.
I think it's about fitting the squad, the balance of the squad, being able to cope with playing here in different competitions with so many games.
So, it's not necessarily, I'm talking quite broadly here in general, of any player. You're not just bringing them just to play with one player.
But, certainly, there's dynamics and there's a balance that needs to be had.
And the beauty about Kobbie is that he can do so many things well, and I think he's proven that and he's evolved so much in the four or five months that I've seen his progress. And that's him.
I'm not taking the credit for that. He's done that himself. But, I think he's shown that he can do so many things, you know, so it makes bringing players in to play with a player like Kobbie a little bit easier when he can adapt himself.
And I think he's adapted over time playing a slightly different role for us already. Patrick Dorgu's two-word reply when asked about Manchester United target Carlos Baleba.
Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba came off the bench as Man United ended the Premier League season with a 3-0 win against Brighton on Sunday. Patrick Dorgu smiled and said no comment when asked whether he would like to play with Carlos Baleba at Manchester United, Brighton lost 3-0 against United on the final day of the Premier League season, and Baleba was introduced from the bench in the 58th minute of the game.
United have tracked the Cameroon international over the last 2 years.
Baleba was keen to move to Old Trafford last summer, but Brighton valued him at 100 million pounds, which cooled the Reds' interest.
Since missing out on a move, Baleba has not been at his best, which led Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler to admit that reports linking him with a move to Old Trafford had negatively impacted him.
Despite Brighton suffering a defeat at the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon, results elsewhere meant the Seagulls qualified for the Conference League, prompting an end-of-season celebration.
Baleba was in high spirits when he walked down the tunnel.
He spoke to Joshua Zirkzee outside the dressing rooms, and he shouted, "Patrick!" while Dougu was speaking to journalists in the mix zone. At the end of Dougu's interview with Manchester reporters, he was asked about Baleba shouting his name and whether he would like to play alongside him at United next season.
He smiled and said, "No comment."
Baleba's mixed form could lead Brighton to reduce their valuation of him this summer.
United are in the market for at least two midfielders, with Casemiro having left and Manuel Ugarte earmarked for an exit. Speaking in September, Hurzeler said of Baleba, "I think it's normal for a young player when the media creates the noise around him. It's not easy for this player to handle it. Therefore, we need to give him the time and support so he comes back to his best performance.
But, he's a young player, and I think that's something we have to accept that young players don't always have the face we want to see. It's our responsibility to help them in the right moments. When asked specifically if the interest from United had affected the midfielder, the Brighton boss added, "I think everyone gets affected, especially when you are that young and you hear these kinds of things, no matter if they are wrong or right, but it's noise we don't need."
Baleba started 23 games for Brighton in the Premier League this term. He had started four successive matches for Hürzeler's side before losing his place in the team again on the final day of the campaign against United.
