It became known as the Hundred Hundred Years War, even though the fighting came in different phases over 116 years. The war started mainly over disputes about land and who had the rightful claim to the French throne. Early in the conflict, England won major victories using skilled longbow archers in battles like Battle of Agincourt, but the war later turned in France's favor. One of the most important figures was Joan of Arc, a young peasant girl who claimed she was guided by divine visions. She inspired French forces to important victories and became a national hero. Although Joan was later captured and executed, her impact changed the course of the war. By 1453, France had regained most of its territory, ending English control over much of the region. The war transformed both nations, strengthened national identity, and changed medieval warfare forever.
