The mere exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon where repeated exposure to a stimulus increases one's liking for it, which explains why people often develop preferences for fashion items they initially disliked after seeing them frequently.

10 things i thought were ugly that i’m obsessed with nowAdded:
Okay, this thought came to me recently and it might not be super profound or anything, but most of the things that I love right now I once hated. And so it brought me to this video where I kind of just want to talk about the things that I used to hate.
I'm somebody who I change my mind a lot, especially as far as fashion, clothing, and style goes. I feel like, okay, I actually looked this up too because I was like, is this a thing? I always talk about it with you guys, but I'm always like, the more I see something, the more I like it. And I guess that's a thing, okay? You like things the more you see them due to the mere exposure effect or familiarity principle, a psychological phenomenon where repeated exposure to a stimulus increases your liking for it.
Familiarity breeds comfort and safety as the brain automatically processes known items more efficiently, reducing perceived risk and increasing appeal.
I've heard of this happening to people over men, like men will grow on them, but I never thought about it in clothing-wise. And so, uh these are the things that I used to hate that I kind of really like. Oh wait, really quick.
I'm kind of loving my outfit right now.
My little bag, it says, "Nobody reads anymore." And funny you brought this up, this is from Book of the Month, who's sponsoring today's video. I do have a book in it. And of course, the little iconic blue box. I love Book of the Month. If you don't already know, Book of the Month is a service that curates your next book for you. Since I can remember, my biggest reading roadblock is picking my next book. I don't know what it is. It's like the pressure of it. So to have five to seven books sitting in front of you that you can pick from that are all good choices, it's so helpful and it makes it way more fun. I love browsing through, reading all the little descriptions, and then I ended up picking one that sounded the best to me. And I love it too because it really makes me step out of my comfort zone. You guys know, I read the same people, I read the same genres all the time. And so to have something that's new is really spicing up my reading life. It's a comedic epic, which is something that like I'm not super tuned in with, but I love it and it's brand new. That's another thing I love from Book of the Month is that you get a lot of new book options, which is fun for me. I like being able to read newer books. And I've heard such good things about this, so I'm very excited to start it. And then Carley Fortune's new book, which I am so excited about. Love her, love her writing style. This is a book about childhood best friends, a little romance like that. I love a best friends to lovers, and Carly Fortune is like perfect summertime reading for me. And if for whatever reason you don't see something that catches your eye that month, you can skip that month and you will not be charged. Each book is also covered by their reader guarantee, so if you don't like a book after reading it, you will get a replacement in your next box to make up for it. And guess what?
In May, you can get your first book for $5 plus a free tote with the code floral, and I will have a link down below in case you want to check it out.
And thank you, Book of the Month. Okay, to start us off, this is a more new thing for me that I've opened my mind to that I'm kind of like, "Ooh, I kind of want these." Square nails. I've always been an almond-shape nail girl. I'm I'm not going to show you my nails right now, but you guys know I use like regular nail polish and I change that out like once a week. But when I have gotten acrylics or like extensions on my nails, I've done almond shape, never squarish, never coffin. And so, I've recently been being fed more like square nails, and I'm kind of like, "Ooh, I kind of want to try that." I don't know if I'm going to like it, but that might be next time I list um like a square, chunky kind of French tip, not too long or anything. But I think it's because that was all that was offered to me growing up when I did ever get my nails done, like if I were going to homecoming or something, and I would go I would I used to love the idea of getting acrylics, and I would get like the squarest nails you can, and I always I don't know if I hated it back then, but looking back, I never like loved my nails. And so, I don't know if that's what trained me or just obviously like trend-wise this hasn't been a thing for a really long time in for as mainstream goes, I don't think, but I've always liked them on other people, and I always think they look so uh sassy. That's next on my list to try. I actually want to go get my nails done to do that, so we'll see. I don't know if I It's one of the things maybe I like it still on other people. I feel like if you know me, if you know this channel, you might have heard me say my stances on colors. I feel like I'm more vocal about my stances on colors because I don't feel like that is First of all, it's something that like if I don't like a color, I haven't liked it for a really long time, and so I kind of I I know that that's like a thing in my in me, but also just don't think it's too offensive to talk about, so I feel like I I gravitate towards saying those things more. So, you may have heard me say the colors that I've always hated, purple, purple and orange actually, and I still don't like orange to be honest, but purple is one that I've come around to, especially within the past 6 months to a year. I feel like again, I've been fed it so many times, paired with other things or different shades of purple, and I have a lot of people like I know purple is a very popular favorite color.
A lot of my like dear and near people to me love the color purple, and I love it on other people. I've never liked it in my house. Like I don't have anything purple, but I kind of feel like like my third eye is opening to it, and I kind of want to just try purple. Maybe I'll try a pair of tights in purple or something. And actually to go along with that is a teal and turquoise. I've never been super turned off by those colors, but I've never gravitated towards them, and so uh those three are ones that I've really heavily changed my mind on over the past 6 months that I'm really interested in adding to my closet, like incredibly. I don't know. I do feel like people have a stance on flip-flops. I've literally always been a hater of flip-flops on everybody. Genuinely, I used to have like a fear of feet, and I got over it. Like I've gotten over it recent in recent years, recent times, because I'm like it's natural. Like it is a part of the human body. Like it it should be celebrated. Even if I were wasn't judging anybody else wearing flip-flops, I did not care to ever own a pair of flip-flops unless I was going to like vacation growing up. I feel like that's the only time I ever wore flip-flops, and I always hated the feel of them, blisters, whatever. Now again, the past few years, flip-flops have been heavy in my rotation, and I'm kind of like, "Wow, I really was missing out on like the effortless vibe and also comfortability." If you find the right flip-flops, my Havaianas have never given me problems ever, and so I think that they kind of changed my mind on it, and now this year I'm looking to add like a studded pair. I know people do like the DIY studs, and I'm really working on my foot health. My foot My foot glamour maxing or no what What would you I'm glamour magicking my feet.
How about that? Like Can I eat still I still feel weird even talking about them, but I do think that was a societal thing, too, wasn't it?
Like the emphasis on feet like don't show your feet online because there are feet people out there. I don't know Maybe it wasn't tuned with that like in tandem, but I wear track pants so often.
They are some of my most worn like pants in my rotation, honestly. I hated track pants for literally my entire life. Uh This was more of connected to somebody in my life who wore track pants my dad.
Hated them. They were like a no-go, you know? When I got my first pair of track pants from Donny, these red ones, I went down like a rabbit hole and I've been thrifting them ever since, and I just think that they've really changed my outfits for the better. I feel like everything that I wear with track pants, it just evens out the playing field so well. Like I can put my fanciest Maybe not my fanciest, but like my more eccentric pieces with it or dressy pieces, and I feel better about wearing them out because it's like so anchored by a track pant. And especially like capri track pants, those were a no-go uh until again I think I got my first pair last year a couple years ago, and I really do like them. And capris again in general, I I was a gaucho girl growing up like brown gauchos and a brown It was like, you know, the monkey guy. That was like my uniform. And then again, I just never got back into like a cropped pant until more recently, and I kind of I don't like a super cropped on myself like to the knee. They I like the mid-calf crop. And so, I do again think that's something that is like extremely functional as it gets warmer out to wear pants or to be able to wear pants or just have another option that is not shorts or a dress or skirt or anything.
I've been doing thrift with me's probably I think almost 6 years, maybe over 6 years. And I think literally all of those 6 years I've been anti half sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves. I have made it my stance very clear in them. I will find them and I will roast them every time and until the past again probably 6 months to a year and it's def- This one I know for a fact it's because I've seen them more and more brands have come out with them. Um like Kuku Intimates, the length on the sleeves. And it took me a little while to put it together that I can thrift that. And I do actually think the length makes more sense similarly to capris like the reason because they're a longer sleeve but they're not so long they really are like the perfect in between.
Wait.
Stop the [ __ ] music. You.
Are you dumb? Especially as it gets warmer. So now I'm starting to understand the whys of the the fashion world, you know. Now this one I've been on to for a few years but tall boots but I do remember a time and I I think this is more out of like jealousy because I have wide calves and so for so long I've always wanted to be into rain boots. I used to have like the wide calf version of Hunter rain boots like I I want to say in like late high school I got them for like my birthday or something and I was so excited. They were still too tight. And I was going to say this was before the wide calf movement but you know what? That's one of the things that I feel like was really left to like the abyss. I used to hate tall boots and I think it was because I just couldn't find them but now they're probably my most important piece in my wardrobe like I wear them all spring summer fall honestly in the winter too and I just I have like two thrifted pairs. One is like a brown one and then one is a black pair. They are probably on on their like last leg like there's not much life left in them and I don't know what I'm going to do because they fit me so well. Then I also have my Jillian wide calf. If you are looking for like actual wide calf rain boots, Jillian I have probably I think three or four pairs and I love them so much and they're just they're so comfortable. So and then the last one being statement necklaces. You could not have paid me to think that I was going to like statement necklaces again. My My is like the statement necklace queen. I keep seeing like these really huge ones from like more small designers that like are so creative and I think that they're iconic. That's all I have for today.
Those are all my things. Like I don't know. This is such a random video, but I was just thinking about it for the past few days and I was like there are so many things that I that could be on this list. So, if you have any that you used to not like then now you like, I would love to hear them because I just think it's like a fun, you know, it's fun to change your mind.
It's fun to not to. I do like being stubborn, but it is fun to change your mind and I kind of always shock myself when I do. I'm like, "Oh, wow, I kind of like that. I want that." You know? So, anyway, I hope you subscribe if you liked this and I'll talk to you next time. Bye.
