Effective horror movies balance character development with supernatural elements, creating emotional investment that amplifies fear; Obsession demonstrates this through its 30-minute character-building phase, believable characters, and supernatural wish-fulfillment mechanics that create tension without relying on traditional demon possession tropes.

Obsession is absolutely incredible (Spoiler Review)Added:
Welcome back to Talkers on the Wall. We just got out of the theater for the brand new Obsession movie. This movie has a crap ton of hype around it >> and uh >> it was a great movie.
>> You could even say we were obsessed with it.
>> Rehearse that one.
>> If I can make a wish, I would wish I never heard that.
>> No, >> that's off the dome. But we are here to talk about Obsession >> just right away.
>> Yeah. Great horror movie.
>> Yeah. Great. Uh I would say I'm just trying to figure out where to start.
Thoughts >> right from the beginning though. I think starting from the beginning. Great opening scene to like show what the movie is going to be kind of about and like >> gives you the right vibe, the right setup.
>> It's exactly what horror movies should do. They just like have the elements of like where you give like typically if you want to have a a like a generic like good horror movie just give about 30 minutes of just solely character building in the movie.
>> Yep.
>> Um and that's exactly what they did.
They did it with Nikki, they did it with Baron, they did it with Ian, they did it with uh Sarah.
>> Sarah.
>> Um all the characters were really fun.
>> Yeah. all super believable characters, like just real situations basically.
>> For real. Um, and yeah, I mean uh the horror elements I will say if you're looking to like have uh like you know a hereditary level like oh my god what >> it's very creepy. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Like you'll get that. Not on that level I would say. Um, >> it it's a very like >> I think it's it's scary because of like how much you care about the characters at the time >> and just like their the actress who plays Nikki. She's really good at just like unsettling movements and like >> she put on a great performance. I think the movie like she makes the movie for sure.
>> Oh, 100%. Um, >> I would say too some of the best work uh when it comes to like horror like we talk about Noatu a lot and that shadow work they do shadows really well to where it's like more so of like >> just like cinematography too.
>> Yeah. as well as like it even leads more oh full spoilers uh full uh like possessions like as well which uh and there's really cool moments where it's like >> where >> like it's just black.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And then we're I was also talking I was like why does she look so much older in this >> and like >> there's just a lot of mystery with it too.
>> I like how there's a lot of mystery but there's also like a ton of openness openness with it as well. Yeah, >> there's like one character really who, you know, if you've seen the trailer, you know that the movie is about Baron.
He makes a wish for the girl of his dreams to love him and then she does and then of course that spirals out of control. But later into the movie when he's trying to fix things, you know, he goes back to the store and you know, he's trying to get like a remedy basically. And it doesn't do that like horror movie thing where nobody believes him. The shopkeepers basically just like, "Yeah, oh yeah, they're real. Oh, you just made like a [ __ ] up wish. You gotta live with it.
>> Get someone to wish that would like erase that.
>> I I really enjoyed that it wasn't like a battle of him trying to con convince people that it was real.
>> More so that it was just like shopkeeper was like, "Oh yeah, he kind of hit the skips from Regular Show. I've seen this before."
>> Yeah. Um >> and even the guy on the Do you talk to the guy on the phone?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. No, that does suck, doesn't it?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. You want to you want to get that right?
>> True.
>> Uh yeah, I know I do.
>> Can't do that.
>> We don't we don't want to do that.
>> Why would you do that?
>> Yeah.
>> And that scene too is just super creepy cuz it's like the super disillusioned like worker or maybe like demon or devil or something cuz then when he's got like he's like, "Oh, you want to talk to Nikki?" And it's just like the screaming.
>> It's like there's like a lot more going on under the under the surface than what it appears to be. And I think that the like the like evil shop, I guess you could call it, playing into that being like, "Oh yeah, no, they're real." Like, "Yeah, I mean, there's a bunch of warnings on the box like >> So true.
>> You kind of Yeah. I mean, you get what you pay for kind of thing.
>> And then when he's just like, "Oh, yeah.
Just I don't know, get a counter wish going, I guess. You only get one though, so somebody else has got to do it."
>> Yeah.
>> Um, which was a great cuz like the whole movie I was like, >> "He should just get another one and wish to fix it." Oh yeah. And then literally like him like so good. And then like him trying to convince other people >> and like Ian's like, >> "Oh yeah, if it's real, I wish for a billion dollar."
>> Yeah. And then the money is just falling between them. That was such a good scene because it's so believable of like >> somebody just be like, "Dude, you're bullshitting me."
>> Yeah.
>> Billion dollars. Um >> I would say let's go best scenes. Uh I think it's between two. Um, one, uh, the Sarah car scene where Nikki comes up and boop.
>> Yep.
>> Or the I just want to watch you sleep cuz that's like the first real like introduction of like, oh my god.
>> Well, before that even when she like sets up the cat for him.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I'm talking about like the real like >> that scene though when he wakes up and he like you just see a bunch of things in the shadows and then she's one of the things. It's like when you see like your coat in the dark. Oh yeah.
>> You're like, there's somebody in here.
Um and then like when she creeps out and then she's like no and creeps back into the corner. I'm like >> or and then that whole scene is great too. She comes out with the flowers just over her face and it's like >> Yeah. I love too that >> in cuz you know we're getting into spoilers. So after he makes the wish, it's kind of like a different person is taking over her body. There's like signs of her like fighting it and trying to like >> you know not go with the wish. And you get that scene too when she is like kind of talking to him and she's like, you know, she's sleeping >> like don't wake her up. So it's like it definitely does seem like a possession sort of thing or like >> the wish just like maybe like I don't know if it's like demons or like it just created a separate personality.
>> This almost seems like more like forceful like soul bending. Yeah, I think it's for me it's a little less creepy when movies are like ah they're possessed by demons. Uh and so I think that it if the wish just gave her like that second personality, I think it makes it a lot creepier too, but also you have that phone call where it's like the original Nikki is basically trapped in hell is what it seems like.
>> So there is like a lot of demon like stuff going on here. Um, but I think the ending too was a great ending. Oh, yeah.
Like I couldn't imagine that movie having a happy ending and they didn't like try to rip one out at the last second.
>> For sure. I I love like the horror movies that like you look at the hereditaries in the world and like the Midsummers and like those films to where it's like >> there's no way it's going to have a good ending like you said. But like it's like okay, how does this end though? But it's still satisfying >> cuz like one thing I hate about horror movies, this particular about slashers is when just everybody dies at the end.
>> It's like well I [ __ ] watch that movie for nothing.
>> So in this that doesn't happen. Not everybody dies. It's not a happy ending but it is a satisfying ending.
>> Yeah.
>> Um and low key sequel. You think could this movie do a sequel?
Uh, what I will say is no, >> but would absolutely love to see what this director does next.
>> I could like >> No, >> I could see a sequel, bro. I I could like um >> But it' just almost be just a drama.
>> I mean, not like same characters, but like same universe, like new witch.
>> Yeah. Okay. Okay. Yeah, but like you want like another obsession just two like another relationship.
>> I don't know. I maybe not like sequel but same universe movie.
>> Okay.
>> And Nikki could be in it as like the the veteran who's I've been through this before.
>> [ __ ] Come on.
>> Those movies are coded sometimes. It'd be like a Final Destination thing. But I there's just so much lore that like is baked or like maybe if it's not even like >> maybe like in the next movie it's just like you it's in the same universe cuz you see the the one wish Willows. Yeah.
But it's like a different magical item.
That could be cool, too.
>> I would be down with That's kind of where I was leading to like I want to see what this director does next.
>> What I was getting a lot of parallels because of it was a willow of weapons >> cuz that one's very plant ccentric as well.
>> So, I could definitely see like this movie sharing a universe with weapons. I know it's not the same director or anything like that, but in my little head cannon, it's like magical trees, you know? I see more of like I mentioned it multiple times. This movie screamed hereditary to me and I I think that that's where like I get most of like my appeal from it. I could see it living in that hereditary cult world. Yeah, I can I this wouldn't it wouldn't be a horror movie anymore either, but I would love to see another movie. Spoilers for who lives at the end, but where like Nikki is like trying to like investigate like the company or the one wish Willows.
Like I just want to know more about like all of that. Like if you could make it like a mystery thriller instead of a horror, >> that'd be cool.
>> That'd be super cool. I would love to see just more of that universe.
>> Yeah. Going more into depth with it too.
This movie is literally a drama. Like a 90% romance drama and then I'd say, no, no, no, no. I'd say probably 70% drama, 30% horror. And that's when you want to do a horror movie. Well, that's exactly what you need to do.
>> Uh, recently too, if you guys have seen it, you should. If you haven't, Hokum, we just watched that movie. In comparison, um, I know you were thinking this movie is a little bit better.
>> It is. It is better. Yeah, >> it is better than Hulcom.
>> It's It's tough for me. I really love Hok. Like I love witch stuff.
>> I did too. Yeah.
>> No, I know. It's just for me they're like I'm trying to think about I think I gave Hulum a good seven. This This could be an eight.
>> I I gave this I'm I'm going to solidify this as a 8.3 off rip. I gave Hulum a 7.7.
>> Yeah, I think Hokum is a seven. This might be an eight.
>> Yeah. I mean, but just look at it though. Characters.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But the main obsession I I >> the main character in Hulum is really really compelling. I don't know.
>> Yeah. But all of these even the main character in this is like a gray character in itself cuz he's like >> you know literally a soulbending wish that he got over his head and >> um >> yeah I but yeah >> I also love just like the survival horror aspect of Hokum where he's like getting like the puzzles and stuff. It's It's very tough.
>> It's >> And it could be recency bias too. Like we just saw upset. It's tough though.
>> I just think what I like more so in a movie.
>> The creepiness. It was way creepier for sure.
>> Yeah. And uh I I Yeah. I mean even like side characters like Ian and Sarah really compelling as well. Like >> I will give you main character of Hulcom 100%. But you have a whole surrounding cast of >> I mean like Jerry from Hokum was super good. Fiona even for the little bit she was in it.
>> Yeah.
>> I think that Obsession definitely has the best better villain. Yeah.
>> Like Nikki being like the possessed lover. Yeah.
>> I think is way better than the witch.
>> Yep.
>> I don't know. It It's really tough for me. It is.
>> Well, I think what we can do, we can kind of put a pin in this.
>> True. We could do at the end of the summer a horror movie ranking. Oh, I was almost thinking May >> at the end of May because there's four more. Yeah. Or two more. But >> because you have back rooms and passengers.
>> Yeah.
>> So, we could do like >> I'm excited for passengers.
>> This May is the big month for horror mo movies. So, >> um is there anything more that you'd want to say?
>> I I mean, if you haven't seen Obsession, definitely go watch it. It's one that you need to see. I think in theaters, too.
>> Horror fans, we are eating and watch Hulcom. Yep. Honestly, just go for the whole ride. Just make it a weekly event in the month of May. Go see Passengers.
Go see Hulcom. Go see Obsession. Yep.
>> And then go see Back rooms when it comes out.
>> Yep. I mean, they're just all great cinema movies. Like you want to see it in theaters where it's totally dark.
You're not in like a home space or you're not totally comfortable.
>> You are not safe.
>> Yeah. Exactly. No, that's the best time to experience it. Great movie.
Definitely go see it. I think I've basically said everything.
>> Yeah. No, I'm all good.
>> Yeah. All right.
