This case illustrates how failures in the criminal justice system, particularly regarding bail decisions and mental competency evaluations, can lead to tragic consequences. Eddie Darren Duncan was released from jail on February 23, 2026, after posting $35,000 bail despite pending mental competency concerns, and within hours, he was involved in a double homicide and shootout with police, killing two of his own cousins. The case highlights the critical importance of proper risk assessment and the potential dangers of releasing individuals with documented mental health concerns into the community.

Now let's jump right into it.
This timeline [music] starts back on May 17th, 2025 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, a city bordering the north side of Minneapolis.
That's where a criminal complaint alleges that around 3:26 a.m. officers attempted to stop [music] a speeding vehicle that had just run a red light.
The court record states the driver initially pulled over before taking off leading officers on a pursuit reaching speeds between 70 and 90 mph. [music] The vehicle later crashed and flipped and the driver ran from the scene.
Court filing state a handgun equipped with an extended magazine and an auto sear switch was recovered from inside the vehicle loaded with multiple rounds.
Investigators believe the vehicle and a cell phone found inside were both linked to Eddie Darren Duncan.
Hennepin [music] County court docs show Duncan was later charged with multiple felonies in connection to that incident.
Including fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle along with a weapons related charge tied to the firearm recovered from the vehicle.
Charging documents show he wasn't apprehended at the scene and a warrant was later issued for his arrest.
Official jail records we obtained from the Hennepin County Jail revealed that he was brought in on that warrant tied to that incident on February 15th, 2026.
The court order shows he refused to appear in court on February 17th, 18th, and 19th of 2026, [music] leading to an order for him to be brought in by force on February 20th.
That same day, a mental competency evaluation was ordered to assess whether he was able to proceed in [music] court.
Due to him being in custody, the assessment was required within 30 days with a hearing set for March 24th, 2026.
Ironically, that same day, a judge also signed a conditional release order setting his bail [music] at $70,000 without conditions or $35,000 with conditions including probation supervision, no firearms, and required court appearances.
A few days would go by, then on [music] February 23rd, 2026, records show a $35,000 bond was posted on his behalf, [music] clearing the way for his release from custody that same day under the conditions set by the court.
He would be released that day at exactly 12:41 p.m. And what followed after that release is still the subject of a major investigation. Not long after his release, around 2:45 [music] p.m., Eddie Darren Donkin could be seen on his own Facebook posting videos where he spoke about ongoing issues he said he had with family [music] members, at times referring to himself as God, and making claims about things he said had happened to him.
Then, not long after that, it shifted.
Just before 3:30 p.m., calls started [music] coming in from a home on the 4200 block of Irving Avenue North in North Minneapolis.
What was first reported as a shooting quickly turned into something much heavier.
Inside that home, two of his own family members, 14-year-old Xavier Barnett and 23-year-old Aquamie Stewart, had been shot.
By the time responders arrived, one of them was already deceased while efforts were being made on the other.
Both would later be pronounced dead.
At that point, what exactly had taken place inside that home was still being worked out.
Responders were moving through the scene trying to understand how it unfolded while information was still coming in piece by piece. Shortly after the tragic shooting that had took place, a post was made on Eddie Daren Duncan's Facebook page >> [music] >> saying two down and long live the guys, man.
While people on Facebook were trying to make sense of Eddie Duncan's last posts, investigators were still on scene piecing together what had just happened inside that home.
Then, less than 30 minutes after [music] the fatal shooting in the neighboring city of Brooklyn Center, police were called to a parking lot near the IHOP and Cub Foods in the area. Reports coming in about a man with a gun.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, that encounter didn't stay contained for long.
Investigators say when officers came into contact with the man, he [music] was still armed and within moments gunfire broke out.
Authorities state the man fired toward officers striking a police vehicle.
Officers returned fire and an [music] exchange followed.
The man was hit.
No officers were struck.
Officers moved in rendering aid at the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital where he would later be pronounced dead.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
And as investigators began working that scene, the identity of that man would soon become clear.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension would later confirm that the man involved in that exchange was Eddie Daren Duncan tying this encounter directly back to the events that had unfolded earlier that same day.
And that's where the timeline starts to draw attention.
Because by that point, this wasn't just about what happened in Brooklyn Center.
It was about everything that led up to it.
For many in the community, it was impossible to ignore earlier that same day Duncan had been released from jail just days after being ordered to undergo a mental competency evaluation. And within hours, authorities identified him as the man involved in a double homicide and a shootout with police.
Some have pointed to the fact that a competency evaluation had already been ordered, arguing that keeping him in custody, at least [music] until that process played out, could have acted as a safeguard.
Most of that criticism was directed toward the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
>> [music] >> Even more questions started building, not just about what happened, but about how it was allowed to unfold the way it did.
In that statement, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office confirmed that Duncan had been released from custody earlier that day after posting $35,000 bail.
They stated their office had raised concerns about public safety and had asked the court to set bail at $70,000 or $35,000 with conditions.
The BCA confirmed the names of the officers involved in the Brooklyn Center shooting and said all were placed on critical incident leave.
They also stated [music] that body-worn cameras, along with in-car cameras, were in use and captured portions of the shooting.
Hennepin County Medical Examiner records later confirmed Eddie Iaramond Duncan died on February [music] 23rd, 2026.
The report lists the cause of death as [music] multiple gunshot wounds.
His manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Some of what makes [music] this case even more unsettling is that the homicides happened while other children were inside the home, a traumatic experience that could stay with them long after that day.
In moments like that, it's not just what happened, but who who there to witness it.
And how that moment carries forward.
Another layer revealed by the sister of the two victims [music] is that this wasn't the first time their family has dealt with loss.
She stated they had already lost another sibling to violence just a few years earlier.
Adding another level of weight to what happened that day.
She also [music] said it was a family member of Duncan who bailed him out of jail that same day.
And according to her, given patterns she says they had seen before, that decision shouldn't have been made.
The system, as she sees it, failed her family by allowing Duncan the option to post bail at all, despite pending mental competency concerns already on record.
To her and others, that choice created a window that should not have existed.
On April 2nd, 2026, direct family members of Eddie Darren Duncan posted photos showing them and others celebrating his birthday.
As of the release of this episode, the case remains under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
We will keep you updated as the final conclusions of their investigation become available.
Before we close this [music] episode, we want to leave you with a video Eddie Darren Duncan posted on Facebook just days before he was taken into custody and later released.
