First Aid for a Venomous Snake Bite

[00:00:00]In this video, I'm going to talk to you about first aid treatment for a venomous snake bite. But first, I want to talk to you about what you should not do after you've been bitten by a venomous snake.

[00:00:10]First, you do not want to take a knife, cut near the area, and suck out the venom. Number two, you do not want to put any type of tourniquet around that particular bite area. Number three, you don't want to utilize any of these suction devices that you see out online.

[00:00:27]Number four, you don't want to take any medications after bit by a snake or you don't want to immerse that particular area in a cold stream, uh, lake, river, etc. Now, here's what you should do, and this is kind of the consensus on what medical experts agree on. After you've been bitten by a snake, you want to go ahead and clear yourself from that particular danger area. So, find a safe area. If you can identify the snake uh or take a picture of it safely, by all means do so. Once you get to your safe area, sit down, relax, and control your blood pressure. Remove any constricting items around that bite that may turn into a tourniquet, such as rings, watches, any jewelry, etc. Then you want to take the area and you want to mark the area with a pen or a marker. You want to draw a circle around that particular bite area and you want to put the time that you were bitten. Then every 30 minutes uh you want to see the progress of that swelling and you want to put a tick mark on the edge of that particular swelling area and again put the time. Believe it or not, if you cannot identify the snake, medical personnel can use this information to determine the type of snake that bit you. Then you want to get on the phone and you want to call for help. If you don't have cell phone coverage or you can't get to an area that has cell phone coverage safely, then hopefully you have a satellite communicator. Utilize that.

Now, again, uh this is kind of the consensus on what people uh experts agree on that you need to do with a snake bite. And believe it or not, these suction devices that you see online that I used to think that were great and work for you will do you more harm than they will good.
