Crossley House 39 & Lantern Library 6 - All about the rooftops!Added:
Hi everyone. Welcome back to the channel. Um, I'm going to do a lot of uh niggly bits and get them all sorted on the house. I've got my paintbrush ready and I'm going to go do a lot of touching up before um and so I can complete the outside to the way I would like it. And hopefully it will um it'll all come out really nice. So, come along and see what I'm getting up to. Lots to do on the house before I finish with getting the roof completed.
>> So, what I'm doing is I'm just going to go over the sides up here. I'm going to do this side cuz this is got caught up with the um the siding. Um and I will get everything painted so it's looking really nice. I'm using a gray to do this. Um, and it's just a case of touching up certainly the end of the slates where it hasn't been caught with the spray paint that I used. So, I shall carry on with this and um get as much as I can done. Yeah. So, let's cue some music.

>> [music] >> I've just been round and done a little bit of touching up. Not a great deal, but um certainly the beginnings of um there's more detail to do. And of course, I want to finish off the roof nicely. Now, I've got this problem. This is the hinge. And I've been looking at it for a while and I think I might have the solution for it. I'm going to put another layer of tiles on this roof, but I'm going to position them right up where the the metal hinge is. Um, I did think about painting the hinge and then I thought, no, why not try it this way and then take these ridge tiles and the ridge is actually the other side of the hinge. There's these ridge cap the caps on top and I'm thinking of putting them on and fixing them so that they will run that seam across but it would help finish the top and also it won't impact on this silver line. Now, that silver line, I could, if I wanted to, is put some black paint on it so it doesn't show. But at the moment, the top of the roof here is not finished. So, I've got to consider that and think about how I'm going to remedy that. So, this is a few days later. Um, I had a break over bit of a break over the bank holiday weekend. Um, if you can see along here, I've covered the lower edge of the piano hinge. Now I take it along to the end.
And it gets a bit odd up there, but actually it's an old roof. Tiles are going to be loose in areas. So I lined up all of these tiles using the miter um glue and the spray um fixer. And now if I just bring you over the top here.
I'm now just finishing off this side.
So, what I'm doing now is if I just bring this over the top, hopefully you can see that whilst I've got Sorry, let me show you there. Whilst I've got that now nicely lined up along there, this now flaps over. And I will use the same gluing method to hold this down on the other side. It's wood glued on this side. And I've not quite finished it yet, but I will will get that finished along there. I've just enough um roof tiles, what they coping stones um to go across here. And I will finish that off. And so the effect is that you end up, I hope, with just the hinge showing. Believe it or not, I've only just now got enough of these to finish the roof space. And what I'm doing is I'm just taking 5 mil approximately off the hinge side so that it fits before the hinge itself. Um, so I'm just taking off 5 mil. It really eyeballing this.
There's no exact science on this at all.
works out at one and a I think it's 1 and a half cm.
So I just want to have approximately a cm from the top from the crown down on the back side. I'm in I'm going to glue the individual tile on the side. Yeah, I'm running out of glue as well which doesn't help. Um let me just put those on there out of the way. And what I'm doing is I'm just putting them alongside the next. So I'm not close not close to giving a fair gap because on any modern property, British property, there is a gap and that allows the air circulating um from the top of the roof. So that one's on. You can see where I'm up to now at this point here.
I've just about got enough glue in this little glue bottle.
So, if I I do that and that.
That's that one.
Yeah. Yeah.
And this one.
Oh, wow. I cannot believe it. I think It's just going to have to be made slightly smaller.
Um, look from this angle here and see.
Right, it is it's fraction. It's a fraction. So, let's make sure that's on there like so.
and and how am I going to do this? Let's have a look. Going to do that.
So, what I'm just doing now, I'm hopefully this is going to work. I don't know whether you can see that, but I've just taken off an angle there.
Yes. And I think that's going to work quite nicely. So, the last bit of glue would glue on. If I have to go and refill this little bottle.
And here we go.
There we go.
And pop that into place.
There.
Now, if I've got to move a few along, that too is okay.
That's fine.
Whoa.
It's just dislodged all of them. But if you leave them to dry, they will go and I'll be fine.
Yes. You see further back here, they've all started to dry.
Perfect.
I'm not going to move that now. Yes.
So, hi. So, I'm going to let this all dry now. Certainly at this end because this is all a bit tacky. This is dry. So, there is no reason why I don't start putting this side down. Um, and then hopefully that will be the ridge done on the roof.
I need to put some stonework on the top of these chim of the chimneys. And I think I might use the gray the the underside of of this of this um cladding. Um, and I'm going to I think what I'll do is I'm going to measure this one up and see how big that piece has got to be. And then I can go from there with it, can't I really? Um, I think it might be a nice contrast. And I'm going to keep the chimney towards the back of the building because if I wanted to put a log burner in, certainly um one of these freestanding ones, I would put it in the corner of the family room in the kitchen. So that sort of really dictates where this is going to go. There's no point in putting at the other end cuz that's the kitchen end.
So there we go. Um, I'm going to carry on now. And I think what I'll do is I'll get this measured up and then I'll put a ridge around the edge and everything and I'll try and make it look smart.
So, let me just move a few things out of the way. I have got a load of offcuts from doing the cladding on Crossley House. There we go. Cut it out. Set it on the top. And there's something about this in this gray that I kind of like.
Oh, I don't know what to do. Whether to take it light or do gray on the top, but perfect. Very pleased with that. Very pleased indeed.
So, I'm not really sure. I think I may have to do do it in the stone and see what that looks like. Anyway, um right, I shall crack on with that now.
Okay, so that's the ridge finished now. Very, very pleased.
decided that I'm going to give the tops of these chimneys a nice piece of slate, which probably isn't what you would normally do, but I rather like the look of that.
So, what I'll do is I'm just getting my big bigger bottle of wood glue.
I'm just going to throw some on top. If it'll come out. Oh dear.
Just going to get that all the way around.
Lots of glue.
Going to pop the piece of slate on which I've taken the edges off which I think looks rather smart. [snorts] Um I don't know whether you can see but I've just taken the edge off on all the sides.
I'm going to put that on.
And all I need now are some pots. And that's the job done. So, I'm very, very pleased with that. That And now I bring you up the other end here for the other pot to go on, which as I say is going to go towards the back of the property. I think that will probably do quite nicely. Just like that. So, I'm going to put lashings of wood glue. Sorry, I'm going to have to put it on one side while I do this. So, I'm just putting the wood glue on the inside of this chimney.
Yeah, I know. Oussie. It's good, isn't it? Nobody can see what I'm doing. I know. It's naughty, isn't it? All glued.
And I shall just deliver that now. I know it's the other way around. Dang, dang, dang, bang, bang. There we go.
and I shall I think what I'll do is I'm going to get my um fabric um weight and put it on the top. But before I do that, I've got the second piece of slate.
So, let's just tell you what, I'm going to have to clean the nozzle out, I think, on this wood glue. It's driving me nuts. It's hard to get this to come out of the bottle.
Right, that's gone round there.
There's so much wood glue. That's ridiculous amount. But again, I've I've taken off the sides of this.
And I'm going to put that on like that because I think that looks rather smart.
Oh, yes.
I'm pleased with that. I'm just wondering whether I need to weight it down or whether this will will take Let me grab my fabric weight and see if I can balance it in the middle to hold this down.
Ah, perfect. So, that's sorted. Oh, I'm very pleased with that. That's done really well. All I've got to do now is I've got to order in some pots to go on the top. So, my next little job is I'm going to create or try and create my own verdigree on the lid of the London library.
Now, on my iPad, I have found a tutorial.
I will link it in the um in the description. how to create a verdigree effect using acrylic paints and it's fulllength tutorial. Um, and this person um is four years old this, but I think this might work. Um, oddly enough, the first thing I've got to do is I've got to create this. It's got to go black.
So, I'm going to what I'm going to do in order to still possibly Oh, sorry. That that was not me. That was the paint.
[clears throat] Sorry, that really wasn't me. Um, what I'm going to do is I'm going to put some paint, black paint onto this, which is the first part. And then you've got to cover it with gold. Well, I personally don't have gold paint. So, what I might do is take an ochre, a yellow ochre, and put it with a bright yellow and see if I can get that same effect. So, I'm just going to dab over this now. I know, I know. I painted it and now it's going black. Um, just wipe it on and that should be fine.
Um, gosh, I'm not even using a paintbrush. So, there we go.
But let's get this done.
This should dry quite quickly actually.
Don't see this hanging around wet for very long. And that's the beauty of acrylic paints.
They do they do dry quite quickly. I can always push it on a bit with my hair dryer in order to get get this done quickly and effectively. If this works, then I'm going to do the um spiral staircase.
I don't know whether it will or not, but if if this does work and I like the effect, then I'll probably um transfer that over onto the spiral stairs. So, she's now instructed that having made it black, you've now got to paint it with gold.
So, because I obviously don't have the I I just simply don't have gold, I'm resorting to a lemon yellow, of which there's a lot of [snorts] and some what is it? Yellow ochre. And what I think I'll do is I'm going to see if I can't create what I want out of the two combined. I think maybe that will probably be enough for me to There we go. I'm just looking at my ring actually to see. [snorts] Um I'm just wondering how to make it a little bit more antiquequy.
Um without going too mad, let me just see what else I've got in Oh, I'll tell you what I have got. I found these. They were put away [snorts] in a box and I thought, "Oh no, I'll have these out."
I'll tell you what, I'm going to use a very, very small amount of what is it? Burnt sienna.
And see whether I only want I literally don't want a lot at all. Um, but let me just add that now.
Um, that's bringing it a little darker.
Okay.
Right.
Well, there's a first. I've mixed some paints really well. There we go. Um, I now need I'm going to do again. I'm going to do it with a sponge again. Um, oh, I'm just trying to get this one wet so I can dab it on. But the idea is that you go over it now with this gold.
Yeah. Let's get the sponge into action and do that and that. Dab it in there.
Let's see what we can do with this and see if I can get some what might look gold. Looks a bit yellow, doesn't it?
Right. Well, we'll keep going. I'm not going to give up on this.

This looks dreadful.
>> [snorts] >> But you know something, I'm having a marvelous time.
Um, yes. Well, this is interesting.
This isn't working at all. Well, not exactly how I'd hoped it to anyway. Um, okay. I'm going to leave it for now. I'm going to let this dry off completely.
Blotches and all. Um, strangely it's going quite greeny, which I suppose is very much like you almost get to a teal color for the verdigree, but I tell you what, this is I'm I'm a mad as a box of frogs. I'm going to leave this to dry. I'll come back to it in a while. Um, I might by then have even been out and bought a bottle of bottle of gold paint, [laughter] but I'll leave [clears throat] it for now and I'll I'll pop back to it as soon it's as soon as it's dried.
[music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> So, as always, I finished what I consider to be gold, which Lord knows just looks like yellow sunflowers.
Um, and I've watched the the channel this lady who's doing this verdigree and I don't have quite the right greens and bits and pieces in my acrylics. So, I've cheated and I have some paint here, which is teal.
It's an emotion paint. That's fine. But I think it's going to do exactly the same.
[music] Heat. Heat. [music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> I think I need to make this slightly darker. And I'm wondering whether I could just pop a tiny bit of black in. I know it sounds a bit drastic, doesn't it? But let me just have a look and see that sponge there. And I only want a tiny amount.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> I'm not entirely convinced I don't need to do a spot more on it, but Actually, I think that effect is absolutely gorgeous and it's worked really quite well. So, I will do a lot a little bit of touching up certainly where all that lovely sort of lattice work is towards the top. But very pleased. Um yes, it sort of worked and I'm very happy. Finally, for this episode, um a huge thank you to a friend who came to stay.
um a very old friend from school actually from senior school and bought all his tester pots that he doesn't need anymore. And I have got an absolute a beautiful selection of all sorts of paints. Um there are these rollon ones by Jewel which yes there'll be somewhere for those to go. Um, I've got honestly I've got what's this? Timeless. I've got one called perfectly taupe to taupe jasmine white. I've got natural calico. And then I've got these amazing uh tins of paint.
And I don't know how many I've got in all. What have I got? I've got that's five 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 and the two teal 19 20. Well, I have to say I am absolutely I'm so delighted with this selection.
But the funniest thing that came with it was this friend's idea of making um I think probably he had it when he was refreshing his home, but there's all the shades are here and it's this really long piece of uh lining paper and we almost decided that by the time we finished I could probably use the lining paper. I'd have to w it out, but it could do with wallpaper. It's just brilliant. And I have so many different shades. Light shades. Nothing too dark.
Something that will go. There's something there for every room in a few dolls houses. But he just went on for miles.
And he even started putting the pots on it to show me which pot went where. So, what I think I'm going to do is I'll keep this because this just this just makes me laugh so much this. Um, but what I will do is I will take the tops off each pot and I'm going to put a blob of the actual color just on the top. But absolutely fantastic. Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I mean, arrived with a bunch of flowers. Well, if I tell you, he didn't even have to do that. Just these pots was f was enough.
So, I've got the flowers here, which are lovely. And I got all these tester pots.
