Eating disorders often stem from underlying psychological issues such as childhood trauma, low self-esteem, and feelings of guilt, and they are frequently accompanied by denial and shame that prevent individuals from seeking help; family support and open communication are essential for recovery, as demonstrated by Imogen's journey where her mother's initial denial of the problem, followed by honest acknowledgment of her own past struggles, ultimately helped Imogen overcome her eating disorder.

Imogen’s Heartbreaking Eating Disorder | Part 2 | NeighboursAdded:
Hi, you've caught Amber Turner. Leave a message and I'll get back to you.
>> [music] >> Oh, it's you.
You >> speaking someone else?
>> I was waiting for Amber.
We were supposed to go for an early morning walk. Have you seen her?
>> Your car is on Fairfax Road.
It is.
>> Yeah. And it's unlocked and some side of the road. And before you say anything, didn't have anything to do with me. At least I think it didn't have anything to do with me.
>> Are you okay?
>> You seem a bit weird.
>> I feel a bit weird.
>> I think certainly didn't agree with me last night.
>> Maybe you should go lie down.
>> Yes, it's a good idea. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know >> about the car.
>> Yeah, exactly.
>> No worries. I'll go right now and pick it up.
>> Thanks heaps for letting me know.
>> Mason, where's Amber? Is she here?
>> Do you reckon you could keep your voice down? People are trying to sleep. Sorry, but I need to know where she is.
>> In bed? Why?
>> I'll explain on the way.
>> What do you mean you'll explain on the way? What's this about?
>> I need your help.
>> Robo's in surgery now. It sounds really bad.
>> Calm down.
>> But what if he dies?
>> Then we'll deal with that when the time comes.
>> He didn't deserve this.
>> What's done is done.
>> But it's all such a mess.
>> Hey, can you keep your voice down? You want the whole neighborhood to hear you?
>> I went out looking for him last night. I took your car. Not a very wise move, I must say. I was desperate. I had to try and find him. So you could see if you could change his mind before the court case.
>> Yeah, exactly.
>> Did you really think he was going to agree to >> No, I don't know what I thought. I just had to try.
>> You don't have to go over it.
>> I [laughter] just don't know what to do.
>> It's going to be okay. I promise.
>> Monsters come to the record.
Fire.
>> Where have you been? And why haven't you been answering your phone?
>> It was on silent. Why? What's the problem?
>> Robo has been hit by a car and he might not survive.
>> Good. It's good to know tools like him get what they deserve.
>> Nobody deserves to die. Hey, freaking out is not going to help anything.
>> I lied to dad about where you were last night.
>> What was he asking?
>> He wanted to make sure you didn't have anything to do with the accident.
>> What did you say?
>> I said you were home.
>> Good. That's good.
>> How'd it go? I saw you get home. How did What go?
>> Sorry. I thought you must have talked to her. Talk to me about what?
>> Nothing. And just like you told Dad, we were all home last night asleep. None of us went anywhere. Agreed.
>> Wakey wakey.
>> Just catching up on sleep after walking around looking for Amber all night.
>> Hey, I thought we said we weren't going to talk about that. Remember?
>> No one's listening.
>> It doesn't matter. We made a pact.
>> Yeah. All for one and one for all. Like the three musketeers. Except they ride horses. Much more reliable than that lemon we're sharing.
>> Imagine.
>> Honestly, it's a bad omen. Keep it down.
>> Fine. If I can't talk to you, who can I talk to? I wonder why Tony didn't say anything about it.
>> What about Tony?
>> You told me not to talk about it.
>> No. No. How is he mixed up in this?
>> He found the car on Fairfax Road.
>> He what?
>> Oh, now he's being a loud mouth.
>> When did this happen?
>> Early this morning. That's how I knew where it was.
>> And you decided not to tell me.
>> Oh, I'm sorry. I've had a few other things on my mind in case you haven't realized.
>> So, you forgot to tell me the most important thing. There was a lot going on at the time.
>> Keep it down.
>> If Tony saw the damage to the headlight, he'll report it to the cops.
>> I'm not sure that he did. He didn't say anything about it.
>> We have to cover ourselves.
We have to report the car stolen.
[music] >> Where was it parked? [music] >> Outside the garage.
>> Was it locked?
Someone must have stolen my key out of my bag at the exhibition.
>> How would a thief know where to find your vehicle if it wasn't in the uni car park?
>> Oh, everyone knows my car's a lemon.
It's [music] always being fixed.
>> So, is it possible that you just dropped your keys outside the garage?
>> It's possible, but I'm pretty sure I had them with me last night.
>> And you left your handbag unattended.
>> I know [music] it's stupid, but I was just having so much fun at the exhibition, I wasn't even thinking about it. I'm just wondering why a thief would go to so much trouble to steal an [music] old bomb.
>> I have no idea.
>> Was there anything of value in it?
>> No, nothing.
>> So, you discovered your keys were missing and automatically assumed that the car was stolen.
>> Yes.
>> I mean, no, I didn't. At first, I thought Mason had the car, but he didn't. He said the last time he saw it, it was parked.
>> Hey, you okay?
>> I'm [music] not entirely sure.
>> Uh, can I go? Uh, Sean will be in touch.
Did you pick your car up?
>> It wasn't where you said it was.
>> I'm sorry. You've seen her car?
>> Yeah. This morning on Fairfax Road.
[music] Fairfax Road.
>> I thought you said the car was stolen outside the garage.
>> Imagine?
>> Yeah. Well, Tony came past the house this morning and said he found my car on Fairfax [music] Road, but when I went there, it was gone.
>> And you didn't think to tell me this?
>> I didn't think it would make a [music] difference. Is it still stolen?
>> Twice, in fact.
>> So, how did you come to find Imagin's car?
>> I didn't just find it, I woke [music] up in it.
>> So, why are you here?
>> I think I'm the reason that Bravo is in hospital.
>> Hey, you sounded weird. What's up?
>> There's something that I didn't tell you about Robo and me.
I don't know if I want to hear this.
I need you to understand that things were more complicated than I said. When I was with Robo, he filmed it on his phone. Seems just about everyone knew about it except for me until Chris told me last night.
Can [snorts] you imagine if he'd uploaded that?
What my family would say, my friends, my life wouldn't be worth living. How could anyone do that? When you say everybody, did Mason know >> what's done is done. You've got to keep it together.
>> I'm sorry. I have to go. Thanks for not judging me.
>> Hey, >> Dad asked me where I was last night.
>> We told him we were home.
>> Yeah. And we're going to keep telling him that. We've got to alibi each other, otherwise we're both stuffed.
>> Yeah. Yep. I have to go.
>> I heard Tody went into the cop shop.
>> It's a good thing you gotten in there first.
>> Yeah, well, I never would have recorded the car stolen if I knew he'd woken up in it.
>> To some sort of blackout. The poor guy thinks he did it.
>> He didn't?
>> Well, we know [music] that, but the police don't. Maybe we should say something.
>> No, no, we don't need to do that. People like Tony don't end up going to jail.
Now, is there anything else? Are there any other surprises that maybe >> Actually, yeah.
>> That was meant to be a rhetorical question.
>> Amber just told me about the video on Robo's phone.
>> Now you know why he deserves to be lying [music] in a hospital bed.
>> Yeah, I get that. I just wish you would have told me.
>> I didn't want anybody else to know.
>> I threw away Robo's phone.
>> You what?
>> I never would have done it if I knew what was on it.
>> So, it's out there somewhere.
We've got to find it right now.
>> Are you sure this is where it landed?
>> I think so. It >> shouldn't be this hard to find. Well, >> then fine, then go home and lead me to it.
>> You think you're right about everything.
It was dark.
>> Yeah, well, it usually is at night.
>> Maybe you were facing the other way.
>> There is nothing wrong with my sense of direction. I know where I threw it.
>> What if the police have found it already? No, they only would have looked over there where Robert was hit.
>> Do you think he'll ever wake up?
>> Let's not worry about that right now.
Let's just keep looking and hope that some random hasn't found it.
There were moments when I could see someone else in Robo, the person he was before he got so messed up.
It's just so sad. No one deserves to die like that.
You still haven't told me what you were doing the night of the accident. Is there something you want to tell me?
>> We made a pact. [music] >> And what if that doesn't feel right anymore?
>> I don't care how it feels. I thought we agreed we weren't going to talk about that night. Not now and not ever.
>> Fine, I won't say anything. But if dad asks enough questions, I won't lie either.
>> I'm just glad you found her. Please take a seat. Her mind. Uh, I've got to get back to the office. So, if we could get a move on with paperwork, that'd be great.
>> That's why we got you down here. I'm afraid we'll be holding on to the car for now.
>> Why? What's the problem?
glass from a broken indicator light found at the collision involving Robert Slade.
>> You think my car was involved?
>> Well, it's got a broken indicator, which could be coincidence, but we'd like forensics to take a look.
>> Do you recall if the light was broken before the car was stolen?
>> Imagining loves that car. You would have noticed if there was damage on it.
>> I don't know for sure, Mom. But I've got this right. Uh, the key was stolen while you were at the photo exhibition.
>> My key?
>> Yeah, it was left in the car. Looks like the thief wanted to save you the expense of going to a locksmith.
Oh, and um, by the way, did you know Robo Slate?
>> I'm sorry. How's that relevant?
>> It's fine, Mom. We met a couple of times.
>> Not the most likable guy.
>> He's a creep. the other day. He actually tried to hit on me.
>> You didn't tell me that.
>> It was no big deal. I shot him down.
>> Right. Well, we'll be talking about that later when we get home. Now, we'll let you go. Oh, there is one more thing. We need to confirm your whereabouts after you left the exhibition.
>> Um, how does that matter?
>> Just a matter of ticking off the [music] paperwork.
>> I went straight home.
>> And did you leave the house again?
>> No, she didn't. [music] Is that it?
>> Hey, darling. Detective Oakley's just called. Apparently, there's a few more questions about the car, >> but I already told them everything.
>> Well, I guess they want some more details.
>> We'll take you to the police station after school.
>> There's nothing to worry about.
>> Is it?
>> No.
>> Is there something you haven't told us?
Of course not. I just hate this whole thing. I hate that I have to go talk to them again.
>> It's only a few questions about a guy being killed. This could be a murder.
>> Yeah, it is horrible. I just don't want anything to do with it. Look, I know, but the police are just doing their job, sweetie.
>> And who knows, the information you give them might bring them one step closer to solving it and getting to off the hook.
>> Dad and I will be there with you.
>> Come in again. I already answered all of their questions before >> because that's the way that cops work, okay? They just want to see if you're going to change your story. So stick to what you told them and you'll be fine.
>> What if they know something?
>> They don't. You reported the car is stolen. So even if it was used in the hit and run, you're in the clear. I'm the one that they're after. They even contacted Kate to check on my alibi and she's got to go in and see them.
>> You told her what to tell them?
>> Yeah, I told her. And I also told her that I had nothing to do with what happened to Robo, even though I'm pretty sure she didn't believe me.
>> Why not?
>> Because lately I've been keeping stuff from her. You didn't tell her what happened.
>> No. The fewer people who know, the better. And besides, she's my girlfriend and she should trust me.
>> So, she knows that you're lying to the police and that you want her to as well, but you won't tell her why. Would you trust someone who did that?
>> Yeah, I get it.
>> You need to fix this.
>> I will. You've got nothing to worry about.
>> Yeah, I do. What if they catch me out this afternoon? They are homicide detectives.
>> It doesn't matter what they are. Just stick to your story. You were at home in bed, asleep, and you didn't know that the car was gone until morning. It's just like we agreed.
Come on, Imagin. You've handled them before. You can do it again.
And these two.
>> Aren't you meant to be at school?
>> Uh, yeah. I have a group presentation today. Thought I'd get some extra sustenance.
>> Wise move. I always believe in arming oneself.
>> It's squeezed fruit, Mom.
>> Yeah. Well, in any case, I'm sure you'll blitz the presentation. You are your mother's daughter.
>> Thanks.
Uh, with the interview this afternoon, try not to get too stressed about it.
>> No, I'm not. Just got to answer a few questions.
>> That's it. I mean, you might get a little bit confronted.
>> Mom, I appreciate the concern, but presentation.
>> Yes, sure. Sorry. Go, go, go.
>> Hi. Another one done.
>> Yeah.
Did they um give you some results today?
My first official C++.
>> Well, now some kids have be bragging about that.
>> I know you're disappointed. I know how high you set the bar for yourself. And I realize that you had to do the exam under very difficult circumstances.
>> I'll be able to catch up.
>> Of course you will. It's one result.
>> Yeah, just got to get used to a minus average for a while.
>> Just till the next exam.
So, um, how's everything else?
>> Fine.
>> Good.
If anything changes, you know where to find me.
>> Thanks.
Images. Time to go.
Imo, look, I know you don't want to do this.
>> What happened? [clears throat] Imagine Ambulance. [laughter] 22 Ramsey Street, Arensbr.
Sweetheart, you're going to be okay.
Yes. Quick as you can.
>> She said she had a dodgy dim sim at that joint up on Anson's corner.
>> Yes. Is that what happened?
>> Yes.
>> But if it was food poisoning, would that result in blood? Or uh she has an inflamed esophagus, which is why you're experiencing pain in the chest, it's a really good thing you got her in here.
If this continues, it could prove fatal.
>> Well, because of the food. No. No. The stomach acid rises up and causes the inflammation. But it's rare for it to happen so quickly. Has [clears throat] this happened before?
>> No.
But I just feel like an idiot. I never should have gone there.
>> Okay, we'll we'll run some blood tests.
Maybe a [music] CT scan. See if we can get to the bottom.
>> It's okay. Carl's going to sort you out.
>> Uh Brett, could I have a chat?
>> Sure.
>> Okay, results are back. The lungs are clear and we've ruled out the possibility of infection. I'll give her [snorts] some medication for the information and she'll need to rest and only eat soft foods.
>> So, so she can go home.
>> Well, there's no physical reason for her to stay, >> but uh I do believe I may have a problem. The inflammation of the esophagus, this sort of thing doesn't happen overnight. It can take weeks, even months. And given what I've seen before, I think there's a a high possibility that she's suffering from bulimia.
You can't be serious. It's >> the only feasible explanation.
>> Well, have you asked I imagin about it?
>> Well, that's my real concern. When I raised it with a one-on-one, she became very defensive. Insisted it was food poisoning.
>> Well, she would know. I mean, why would she lie?
>> Denial is one of the first things people do when they're confronted with an eating disorder.
>> I'm a father. I would know.
>> Yeah, I know this is hard to take in.
>> But if she had food poisoning, she'd present with symptoms. She simply hasn't.
If if she continues to deny there's a problem, she could put her mental and her physical health at serious risk.
>> She's smart. She's attractive. She's got plenty of friends.
>> How could she do this to herself? And how can we not pick it up?
>> Susan did warn me.
>> When?
>> Last week.
Why didn't you tell me?
>> Because [snorts] I didn't want to believe it.
>> She's our daughter. If someone says she has a problem >> talking about me?
>> Yes. Your mom and I are worried.
>> Don't. This will be fine.
What?
>> Carl thinks you might have an eating disorder.
>> He's wrong.
>> Are you sure?
>> Of course. I think I know. Doctors can make mistakes.
>> Where are you going? to get my washing.
Imagin, I'll do it. Imagin.
>> What's going on? Where is she? [sighs] >> I'll go.
I didn't sneak out here to eat a chocolate bar. If that's what you're worried about, please don't even joke about this. I get you're trying to do the whole concerned parenting thing, but you need to chill. I ate a bad dim sim.
>> Look, you're right. Doctors can make mistakes.
But imagine, if there's something bothering you, you need to be able to talk to me about it.
>> Seriously, I'm good.
Are you willing to even consider the possibility that there might be something wrong?
Look, sweetie, I know things haven't been great around here lately, and I know that your your grades have been affected at school.
>> One C++, and I have an eating disorder.
>> I I didn't say that.
But if you're feeling stress, I completely understand.
>> Yeah, well, I'm not exactly doing the cartwheels about it.
>> It's normal to be to be stressed.
It's only a problem when you don't know what to do about it and everybody deals with it differently and some some use food.
They either eat too much or or not enough or they binge.
>> I told you I am fine. So, can you please stop talking about it?
You're cooking. What did we do to deserve this punishment?
>> Yeah, I thought I'd whip up some scrambled eggs.
>> Is that on the diet?
>> Yeah, besides you like them.
>> Uh, I can whip up some porridge.
>> Eggs are fine.
Happy Father's Day.
>> Oh, thanks, gorgeous.
>> All right.
>> Tasty. even for something made by draft.
>> So, you going to open it?
>> No, you don't have to ask me twice.
>> Oh, look at that. A portrait of Kelly Slater. How good does he [laughter] look?
>> You know what? This reminds me of WA.
Yeah. Remember that time we went to Margaret River?
>> Oh, it was so much fun. And we used to play that game where we'd pretend we were seals.
>> Yeah, that's right. And you tried to get us to eat a dead fish.
>> I did not.
>> Yes, you did. [laughter] >> No. And then we ate so much seafood that you got sick.
>> Could you please pass through the water?
>> If you're planning on another lecture, I'm out of here.
>> I actually wanted to tell you something.
about me.
I was a lot like you at school. Yeah.
Conscientious, hardworking, always getting A's.
But then mom and dad got a divorce and it was horrible. It was it was a mess. I thought you always said it was okay, but they managed to be nice to each other.
>> Yeah, but I still didn't understand why it was happening.
And I started to believe that it was my fault.
Now, if I'd been a better daughter, you smarter, prettier, cleverer, then maybe they would have stayed together. That's crazy.
I know that now, but that's that's what I thought at the time.
I um I started getting really anxious and I started binge eating as a way of dealing with it.
And I'd do it again and again and again until my mother finally caught me and made me get help.
Imagine that.
I've never told that to anybody before.
Not even your dad.
And even after all these years, I'm still trying to hide it because I don't want to look like I'm anything less than perfect.
Mom, I'm sorry. Oh, no. No, don't be.
Look, I know my situation was different to yours, but we've handled it in very similar ways.
That's not what I meant.
I meant I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I'm nothing like you.
You hungry >> for like the 50th time? No.
>> Well, it's just that you haven't eaten much lately.
>> Maybe because you're stressing me out.
I'm fine.
>> That went well.
I thought by opening up to her about my experiences that she'd feel more comfortable about opening up to me.
>> Why didn't you ever tell me about that?
>> I guess I still feel ashamed even after all these years. I'm I'm sorry. I shouldn't have kept it a secret from you.
>> It's all right.
>> It's not really. It's probably the reason why I didn't see what was going on with Imagin. If I told you, you may have picked up on it.
>> What do you think? Maybe I should talk to her.
>> Yeah. Okay.
And if that doesn't work, >> I'm still trying to get my head around this, but don't write me off just yet.
>> Are you guys running for parents of the year? Because I'm not voting, so you're wasting your time.
>> You know, you can't hide from your problems.
>> Lucky I have none. Don't you see that's part of the problem? The hiding it, the denial, the the shame.
>> You know, maybe it's not as serious as K made it out to be.
>> I was in that ambulance with you. Do you have any idea how much that scared your mother and I?
>> Didn't it scare you?
>> Yes.
>> You know, we love you. But there is no medical way that this was a one-off. The damage was too severe.
>> Kate, I was sick a few times.
>> A few times? Yes, that's all.
>> You know you can talk to your mom about this. She knows exactly what you're going through.
>> She sent you out here, didn't she?
>> No. This was my idea. Will you just sit and give me a chance?
>> Whatever I say, you're going to tell her anyway, so I might as well say it to her face.
>> Did you make it up?
>> What?
>> That you have bulimia when you're a teenager?
>> No. because it's a pretty twisted thing to do to try and get close to someone.
>> But I I wouldn't do that.
>> It just doesn't make sense. I mean, if you had this problem, why didn't you mention it before?
>> Because it wasn't important until now.
>> Oh, so now you're just telling everyone.
>> No, that's not true.
>> Why'd you tell dad then?
>> Because [laughter] I'm worried you're going through exactly the same thing as I did.
>> Don't you see? I am nothing like you.
>> Imagine.
>> We are not close and we will never be.
And you trying to make that any different is pathetic.
>> Don't speak to your mother like that.
Now apologize. Oh, she'll be waiting a long time for an apology. Why don't you just run along to work [music] instead of this useless attempt at parenting?
Work's where you're at your best, right?
Where you really shine. So, go on. Off you go.
What are you doing?
>> Look, it's imagining sports bag.
Our title is sick and this just shows us how much she's been bingching and it's real and we have to deal with it and we can't let her take the leap anymore.
>> Okay, whatever we have to do to get her well.
>> How did this happen? How did we we let our daughter get so sick and we didn't even realize we did this, Brad? We've been focusing our attention on Josh and we've gotten complacent and this this is what's happened.
>> Hey, listen. We can't blame ourselves.
>> We certainly can blame ourselves.
Who else is there? She's been telling us for months that that we've been ignoring her. If there was ever a cry out for help that this is it.
>> Okay. So, what do you want to do?
>> I don't know. Get get all the junk food out of the out of the pantry that she could possibly binge on. Just get rid of it all.
>> I'm going to go and find Amber. She might know where where I is. I need to find her and sort this out.
Oh, Susan, have you seen Imagigen?
>> No. Why? What's wrong? Oh, I'm just I need to speak to her and she's not answering the phone. She's so angry, especially with me. And I'm terrified that she's she's going to do something something stupid.
>> Of course. Of course. If I do see it, I'll drag her home myself.
>> Thank you. Thanks.
Oh, I am immature. Mom, [laughter] it's all right, darling. [laughter] >> I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry. I never should have said all those awful things to you. I don't know what's wrong with me.
>> Sweetie, it's fine. Everything's [music] going to be fine.
>> I keep doing this. [laughter] >> I don't know. I don't know. But we'll figure it out. Okay.
>> I can't stop. Every time I say I would do it, then I do. I hate myself.
[laughter] It's all right. I'm here. [music] Okay.
I'm here. We'll work through it together. Okay.
