Mesha Stele Confirms Bible History: The Ancient Inscription Discovery

The Mesha Stele, a black basalt stone inscription discovered in 1868 at Dhiban, Jordan by Anglican missionary Frederick Augustus Klein, dates to 840 BC during King Mesha of Moab's rebellion against Israel. Standing 1.24 meters tall with 34 lines of Moabite text, this artifact references King Omri of Israel and the House of David, thereby confirming biblical chronology. The inscription describes Mesha's capture of vessels of Yahweh and their dedication to Chemosh, the Moabite god. French archaeologist Charles Clermont Ganneau created a papier-mâché squeeze of the stele before it was damaged, preserving this crucial historical document for future study.
