Inside it is a white powder fine as flour kept dry in a paper sack my father used before me and his father used before him. It costs less than a cup of coffee for enough to last you the better part of a year. One spoonful of it mixed into a bucket of water so cloudy you cannot see your own hand through it and within a few hours that same bucket is clear enough to read a newspaper through. This is not a filter.
There is no motor, no cartridge, no plastic housing. It is clay, a specific kind of clay and Japanese koi breeders have been working it into pond water since long before anyone in the West had built the first plug-in aquarium filter.
I want to be honest with you about something before we go further because I think honesty is rarer in this space than it should be. This clay does not filter water in the way a machine filters water. It does something better suited to the actual problem most cloudy tanks have and by the end of this video you will understand exactly why that distinction matters and why the machine version of this solution is in most cases solving the wrong problem entirely. My name is Isamu Yoshida. I am a koi breeder in Niigata, Japan. My family has kept fish for three generations going back to my grandfather who kept fish in the mountain ponds behind the same house I still live in today. I did not grow up thinking of this clay as a discovery or a hack or a secret.
I grew up thinking of it the way you think of salt in your kitchen. It was just there. It was just used and nobody in my family ever asked why because it worked and that was enough for them. It was not enough for me. I wanted to understand the actual mechanism not just repeat what my father told me. So a few years ago I went looking for the chemistry behind what we had been doing without explanation for three generations. What I found changed how I think about every cloudy tank I have ever looked at, including the ones that were not mine.
If you have never heard of this before, that is not because it does not work. It is because it never had to be marketed to you. Stay with me.
Because by the end of this video, you're going to understand a piece of basic water chemistry that most fish keepers go their entire lives never learning.
Here's what I'm going to show you today.
A natural mineral clay sold openly, not hidden, not banned, not some forgotten relic, just something that never crossed over into western fish keeping the way plastic filters did.
It costs under $5 for enough to treat a home aquarium for months. It works on the most common types of cloudy water, new tank haze, bacterial bloom, stirred up substrate, cloudy water after a water change gone wrong. It does not run on electricity. It does not need replacing every 4 to 6 weeks. You buy it once, you use a small amount at a time, and the same bag lasts most home aquarium owners the better part of a year. I want to give you a comparison because I know most of you watching this are not in Japan, and you have never touched this clay in your life. Think about what baking soda is in your kitchen. It is not glamorous. It is not advertised on television. It sits in a box in your cabinet or your refrigerator, and quietly it does four or five different jobs that would otherwise take four or five different specialty products. It deodorizes, it cleans, it balances acidity, it softens. One plain, cheap, natural substance doing the work of a whole shelf. That is exactly what this clay is for your aquarium. One substance, several real jobs. Let me tell you about the ponds outside my fish house because this is where the story actually starts.
People who visit here for the first time always call them mud ponds. That is the word everyone uses in books, in old koi magazines, in conversations between breeders who have never actually dug into what the mud is made of, but it is not really mud in the way you are picturing it. What is actually sitting at the bottom of these ponds is a specific mineral clay, rich in something called montmorillonite. It is the same reason koi raised here in this region come out of the water with a depth of color and a clarity of skin that koi raised in concrete ponds or plastic lined ponds almost never match, even when everything else, the food, the water source, the care, is identical.
For most of my life, I did not know why this was true. I only knew that it was.
My grandfather could not have told you the word montmorillonite if you had asked him. He would have told you that the pond water here settles right in a way that water in a neighbor's concrete pond, two properties over, never quite did. He did not need the mechanism, he had three generations of observation instead. I wanted the mechanism anyway, not because tradition was not enough, but because I think understanding why something works is what lets you actually trust it instead of just repeating it. So, I spent time reading into the actual chemistry of clay minerals in water, not folklore, not marketing copy, just mineralogy and colloid science. And once I understood the mechanism, it explained not just the clear water, but almost everything else about how these ponds have functioned for as long as anyone in my family can remember. Let's start with the actual problem. What is cloudy water physically? Cloudy or hazy water is not dirt in the way you think of dirt on a countertop. It is not something you could wipe away with a cloth. What you are actually looking at is thousands, sometimes millions, of microscopic particles suspended in the water column.
Particles so small and so light that gravity barely affects them. New substrate dust that never fully rinsed out. Bacteria in the middle of a population bloom, which happens often in a newly set up tank as the biological load spikes before the system stabilizes. Fine organic debris, broken down waste, decomposing plant matter, uneaten food stirred up from the substrate during a water change or a filter cleaning. Each one of these particles carries a tiny electrical charge and in most water that charge is the same sign across all of them, meaning the particles repel each other instead of clumping together.
This is a real well-documented phenomenon in water chemistry, sometimes discussed under the term zeta potential, essentially a measure of how strongly suspended particles repel one another in a liquid.
When that repulsion is strong, particles stay separated, stay suspended, and never settle.
That is why cloudy water can sit cloudy for days or weeks with no change. The particles are actively pushing away from each other, not drifting toward the bottom.
This is also why your filter alone often cannot fix it. A mechanical filter is built to catch particles that are large enough and heavy enough to get pulled into the intake and trapped against the media.
Most of the particles causing true haze are far smaller than that. They pass straight through standard filter floss the same way fog passes through a window screen.
Your filter is not broken. It is simply not built to catch something that small.
Here is where the clay comes in and here is the actual mechanism, not a guess.
Montmorillonite clay particles carry their own natural electrical charge and critically it is a charge that interacts with and neutralizes the charge on the suspended particles causing your haze.
When you introduce the clay into cloudy water, the clay particles are drawn toward the haze particles and bind to them. Once that charge is neutralized, the natural repulsion that was keeping everything separated disappears. The particles are now free to do what they would have done from the start if nothing had been holding them apart, one clay particle grabs several haze particles. Those clumps bump into other clumps and merge into bigger ones.
Within a couple of hours, what used to be millions of invisible repelling suspended particles becomes a much smaller number of particles now heavy enough to settle to the bottom on their own or large enough that your existing filter floss can actually trap them on the next pass. This process has a name in water chemistry, flocculation, and it is not unique to this clay. It is the exact same underlying principle behind almost every commercial water clarifier product sold at pet stores for 10 to 15 dollars a bottle. The difference is what is doing the neutralizing.
Most commercial clarifiers use a synthetic polymer engineered in a lab specifically for this job. This clay does the same job because of its natural mineral structure, the same structure that has been sitting in the ground in this region for longer than koi breeding has existed here as a craft. There is a second layer to what this clay does, and it is just as important as the flocculation, even though it is less visible.
Clay minerals like montmorillonite have what is called a high cation exchange capacity, a measurable ability to hold on to and release charged mineral ions.
In practical terms, that means as the clay sits in your water, it is simultaneously doing two things at once.
It is releasing trace minerals, calcium, magnesium, iron, silica, the same minerals leach out of natural clay bottomed ponds and feed into fish health and coloration over time.
And at the same time, it is binding onto and pulling out excess dissolved substances from the water, ammonia in some conditions, and heavy metals like copper and zinc, which commonly leach into tap water from old household plumbing and can quietly stress fish over months without ever causing a visible symptom you would notice. So, you're not just getting clear water. You are getting a small ongoing mineral exchange happening in the background the entire time the clay is in your tank releasing what your fish need binding what they do not. I want to be precise about one thing because I think most videos in this space over promise and I do not want to do that to you. This clay is very effective against what I would call true haze the white gray or slightly brown cloudiness caused by suspended dust bacterial bloom particles and organic debris. It is less effective on its own against green water which is a different problem entirely that is a free floating algae bloom and while the clay can bind some algae cells because they carry a charge too, it will not solve a heavy green water problem the way it solves a haze problem. Green water needs light control or a UV clarifier alongside it. I would rather tell you that plainly now than have you dose your green tank get a partial result and think the method failed you.

Snow melt feeds most of the water sources here running down through terrain that has in certain pockets deposits of this specific clay sitting close enough to the surface to be worked into pond bottoms by hand. Koi breeding as a craft grew up in this region generations ago and the clay was simply part of the ground breeders were already working with. Nobody imported it, nobody marketed it, it was already here. The same way certain regions have particular soil that happens to be good for growing a particular crop and the people farming that soil never think of it as special because it is just the ground under their feet. Before there was a scientific name for montmorillonite, before anyone in this region had ever heard the word flocculation or cation exchange, breeders here simply knew through generations of direct observation that working a small amount of this clay into a pond made cloudy water settle out faster, made koi color come in deeper, and seemed to keep fish healthier through the stress of the growing season. Here is exactly how I use it and how you can use it in any tank or pond today. Step one, get the right clay. You want pure montmorillonite, also sold as bentonite or koi clay, not scented or additive loaded clay from a craft store.
It comes as a fine powder or small clay balls, usually sold in koi and pond supply shops or online for around $10 to $15 for enough to last several months.
Step two, dose it correctly.
The standard ratio is roughly one level tablespoon per 1,000 gallons for ponds or a small pinch, about a quarter teaspoon per 20 gallons for a home aquarium.
Less is fine to start. Step three, introduce it properly.
Mix the clay into a cup of tank water until it is a thin, milky slurry, then pour it evenly across the surface of the tank or pond. Do not dump the dry powder straight in. It clumps and does not disperse evenly.
Step four, let it work.
The water will often look slightly cloudier for the first 30 to 60 minutes as the clay disperses and begins binding to particles. This is normal.
Over the next two to four hours, you will see it start pulling clear and by the 12 to 24-hour mark, most tanks are fully clear. Running your filter during this window helps catch the larger clumped particles as they form.
Step five, repeat as needed.
For an ongoing cloudy water problem, dose once a week. For a one-time cleanup, new tank, disturbed substrate, algae bloom, one or two doses is usually enough. You do not need a $12 bottle of synthetic clarifier that runs empty in a month and needs replacing again next month.
You do not need three or four separate products stacked on your shelf, one bottle for haze, another for color, another for trace minerals, another for heavy metal binding.
A spoonful of natural clay does all of that from one source, the same way it has for as long as koi have been bred in these mountains, cheap, unglamorous, and reused the exact same simple way generation after generation without needing to be reinvented. You are simply adding one additional low-cost step on top of what already exists. Mix your small dose into a cup of tank water as described, pour it in during the evening if you can, and check back the following morning.
Most people see a visible, noticeable improvement by then, even before the full 24-hour window has passed. This clay does not compete with your filter, your plants, or your existing biological processes. It is simply doing a job that none of those things were actually built to do, which is pulling the smallest, lightest, most stubbornly suspended particles out of the water column entirely.
For larger setups, say an outdoor koi pond in the range of a thousand gallons or more, the same principle applies at scale. Mix your dose into a larger bucket of pond water first to form the slurry, then distribute it around the pond's surface rather than concentrating it in one spot. Ideally near where your pump or waterfall creates natural circulation, so it disperses through the whole system faster rather than settling near a single edge. And if you are running a heavily planted tank, you do not need to worry about the clay interfering with your plants' access to nutrients in any meaningful way at these low doses.
The amount of mineral exchange happening is small relative to a typical planted tank's fertilization routine, and many keepers who already dose plant fertilizers report no noticeable conflict between the two.
If you know someone whose tank has been cloudy for weeks now, and they have already gone through two or three different bottled clarifiers from the pet store without a real fix, send them this video. A spoonful of clay costs less than any single one of those bottles did, and it might genuinely be the one thing on their shelf that they have not tried yet. Now, let me walk you through exactly how to use this step-by-step, whether you're treating a small home aquarium or a full outdoor pond.
Step one, source the right clay. You are looking for pure montmorillonite clay, sometimes labeled bentonite, sometimes sold specifically as koi clay or pond clay through koi and pond supply retailers, both in physical shops and online.
You do not want scented clay, cosmetic clay, or clay sold with added fragrances or additives from a craft or beauty supply store. You want the plain mineral, nothing blended in.
A bag in the range of 1 to 2 lb will run you somewhere between 10 and 15 dollars, and for a typical home aquarium, that bag will last the better part of a year because the dose per use is small. Step two, get the dose right. For an outdoor pond, the standard ratio breeders here use is roughly 1 level tablespoon of clay per 1,000 gallons of water. For a home aquarium, scale that down significantly. A quarter teaspoon is usually plenty for a 20 gallon tank.
I want to stress something here because it is the most common mistake people make with any flocculant, clay or synthetic. More clay does not mean faster or clearer results. Using more than the recommended dose simply creates a heavier, longer-lasting haze from the clay itself before it settles, and in extreme overdosing can cloud water that was not cloudy to begin with. Start small, you can always add a touch more later. You cannot easily undo an overdose. Step three, introduce it the right way. Never add the dry powder directly into your tank or pond. It clumps unevenly on contact with water, and you end up with a pile of dense clay sitting in one spot instead of a treatment that actually spreads through the water column. Instead, take a cup of water directly from your tank, stir the clay into it until it forms a thin, milky slurry with no dry clumps remaining, and then pour that slurry evenly across the surface of the water.
Moving your hand or the cup slowly so it disperses rather than sinking straight down in one place.
Step four, let the process run. In the first 30 to 60 minutes after dosing, do not panic if the water looks slightly cloudier than before you started. This is completely normal and expected. It is simply the clay dispersing through the water column before it has had time to bind to the haze particles. Over the following two to four hours, you should start to see visible clearing begin, usually starting near the surface and working downward. By the 12 to 24-hour mark, most tanks and smaller ponds are substantially clearer, often fully clear. If you have a filter running during this window, leave it on. It will help capture the larger, heavier clumps as they form, speeding up the final stage of clearing. Step five, repeat on the right schedule. If you're dealing with a persistent, recurring cloudiness problem, a pond that always seems slightly hazy, for instance, dosing once a week at the low end of the recommended amount is a reasonable maintenance rhythm. If you're solving a one-time issue, a new tank cycling, substrate that got stirred up during a rescape, cloudiness after a larger than usual water change, one or two doses spaced a few days apart if needed, is typically enough to fully resolve it, and then you simply stop until the next time an issue like that comes up. One more practical note. This clay is safe alongside live plants and does not appear to negatively affect established beneficial bacteria colonies in your filter or substrate at the doses described here. The clay is targeting suspended particles and dissolved minerals, not attacking biological life in the tank. It is compatible with the same biological filtration principles I have talked about in other videos on this channel.
This is not a replacement for a healthy nitrogen cycle. It solves a different, narrower problem, visual clarity and mineral balance, sitting alongside whatever biological system you already have running.
