First-year emergency medicine residents must develop the ability to identify all emergencies with minimal delay, properly triage patients, and quickly evaluate critical conditions including cardiovascular, neurological, and abdominal emergencies, while mastering essential diagnostic skills such as reading ECGs, chest X-rays, and arterial blood gases; unlike other medical departments, emergency medicine training remains consistent across all years, with the same categories of emergencies (neurological, cardiovascular, abdominal, trauma, and pregnancy-related complications) addressed throughout the entire residency program.
