Mulholland Drive Briefly Explained

[00:00:08]>> [music] >> Even though there are many interpretations of Mulholland Drive, there is none that could be considered official.

[00:00:20]As it is usually the case with many mind-bending films with ambiguous endings, directors often encourage the public to come up with their own interpretation.

[00:00:32]In this video, I will focus on one interpretation which makes the most sense to me.

[00:00:38]It goes like this.

[00:00:40]The film can be divided into two parts.

[00:00:43]The first part, we are viewing Diane's dream, one in which she is a successful, kind, and intrepid actress.

[00:00:52]In the second part of the film, we witness Diane's real life as a struggling and troubled actress.

[00:00:59]This divide between dream and reality is so obvious that you will notice when the jump occurs.

[00:01:07]Let's check it out.

[00:01:11]The most telltale clue that we are witnessing Diane's dream happens right at the beginning of the film when we see an image of a pillow getting gradually blurred.

[00:01:22]It is likely that this represents Diane going to sleep, and what we see from then on is actually Diane's dream.

[00:01:31]Notice how the bedsheets are similar to those in Diane's bed at the end of the film.

[00:01:38]The last 20 minutes or so, we are seeing Diane's real life.

[00:01:42]This is also suggested by the cowboy saying, Hey, pretty girl.

[00:01:49]Time to wake up.

[00:01:50]with Diane waking up to the sound of the door bang.

[00:02:01]>> In the Winkie scene, we see a conversation between two men in a diner called Winkie's, which also happens to be the place Diane and the hitman meet later in the film.

[00:02:13]There are some interesting clues here that suggest this scene is actually happening inside a dream.

[00:02:20]First, just before the Winkie scene takes place, Rita falls asleep and the scene with the two men at Winkie's develops.

[00:02:29]Straight after Dan has a heart attack, we see for a split second Rita still sleeping.

[00:02:36]Could this indicate that this scene is actually Rita's dream?

[00:02:40]Call me.

[00:02:41]Perhaps this is a subtle clue David Lynch used to define the time frame of Rita's dream.

[00:02:47]But there is more. It's the second one I've had. Dan says that it's the second dream he's had, but they're both the same.

[00:02:56]Could the Winkie scene be a dream inside of a dream?

[00:03:00]As I explain in greater detail in another video, both dreams are the same because Rita is simply a part of Diane's personality.

[00:03:11]So, Diane is dreaming of Rita, who is dreaming the Winkie scene.

[00:03:16]In other words, a dream inside of a dream.

[00:03:23]All characters that appear in Diane's dream were individuals that Diane either already knew or had just recently met before Diane went to sleep and started dreaming.

[00:03:35]However, most of the dream characters were given different roles and names than their real-life counterparts.

[00:03:43]For example, the dream cowboy is just a guest at Adam's and Camilla's party.

[00:03:49]The mother of real-life Adam is Betty's landlady.

[00:03:53]This is what psychoanalysts call displacement and is a core characteristic of dreams.

[00:04:01]There are further clues to suggest that we are seeing Diane's dream, such as the scenes with the Castigliani brothers, Adam and the pool man and the Bob Brook audition.

[00:04:21]But, what about the main characters?

[00:04:25]Why is the dream story specifically centered around Betty, Rita, Adam and the organization?

[00:04:33]Very succinctly, I interpret the characters of Betty, Rita, Adam and the organization as representing key personality structures in Diane's [music] psyche, which appear personified as archetypes in her dream.

[00:04:49]According to Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung, archetypes are like mental templates that are shared by all of humanity and which form our personality.

[00:05:04]They often appear in dreams and interact with our personality structures, shaping the characters we encounter in our dreams.

[00:05:15]So, dream Betty represents Diane's persona, the part of our personality that deals with how we present ourselves to others and how we wish others to see us.

[00:05:27]Rita and Adam represent different aspects of the shadow, which is the place where all the perceived weaknesses and repressed wishes and thoughts are stored.

[00:05:38]So, the shadow is like the rubbish bin of our personality, as it contains the stuff we reject and repress as not being part of ourselves.

[00:05:50]The organization represents the animus, the unconscious masculine aspects in a woman.

[00:05:58]Because the old man organization is portrayed as being corrupt and malicious, the [music] animus is manifesting itself negatively in Diane's dream, ultimately becoming the trigger for her fatal psychotic break.

[00:06:15]So, that's Mulholland Drive in a nutshell.
