Living on $6 Until My First YouTube Payday in Japan 🇯🇵 | No Job, No ChoiceAdded:
Living on just $6 in Japan… alone.
No job. No choice.
Good morning. It's just past 11 a.m. With a few days left until payday, I'm keeping my spending to an absolute minimum. Today is a quiet challenge, seeing how fulfilling I can make my day with just $6. Since I'm living on a tight budget, these moments of self-care feel even more important.
Even without a job, I want to keep myself presentable and maintain my dignity. Today, I'm washing my sheets. When you're on a budget, having clean bedding makes a huge difference for that finding peace at night. Just imagining the smell of sundried sheets makes me feel a bit richer. Drying my hair and getting myself ready. Vacuuming the floor to clear both my room and my mind. Putting the dried dishes back on the shelf. My morning routine.
Breakfast is leftover curry from yesterday. In this lifestyle, yesterday's me helps out today's me. My breakfast cost is practically zero.
A quiet start to the day. I actually love this time spent reheating yesterday's food.
As the steam rises and the aroma fills the air, my hunger wakes up. I plate it slowly and carefully. It's simple, but I feel like I'm taking good care of myself.
The curry tastes even better on the second day. The flavors have deepened. Eating slowly in my quiet room. This peaceful time is the ultimate luxury for me right now. I scarf down the last bite. Looking at the empty plate, I feel a little bit stronger. Getting a haircut after 3 months.
Changing my clothes to reset my lazy self and take a new step forward. Laundry is done. Even hanging them indoors. Clean sheets brighten my mood. I'm creating my own small happiness. After 3 hours of editing and reading, I'm finally heading out. To save on train fair and get some exercise, I've decided to walk an hour to the barber. It's a long walk, but I need this time right now. I'm visiting this barber for the first time. I'm a little nervous about letting a stranger fix the me I've neglected for 3 months, but I'm looking forward to meeting a new version of myself in a new place.
Finally done. I feel so much lighter after 3 months. Now I'm heading straight to the supermarket to buy dinner. Arrived at the supermarket. My budget is $6. Now the challenge is to see how much I can get with this limited amount to make a good meal.
First item, miso soup ingredients. It's only about 60 cents, but it provides warm soup for several days. A strong ally for my budget life. Next is ininoi mushrooms.
Also about 60 cents. They're cheap and add volume to meals, making them essential for my lifestyle. Scanning the seafood section for tonight's main dish.
Yellowtail fillets. Three pieces, half price, about $1.50. I'm so grateful to find a main dish at this price. It looks like dinner will be a feast tonight. I'm in the instant noodle aisle.
I'll go with a single pack of miso ramen. Only about 60cents. Right now, Buying only what I need is what matters most. Green onions, about 60 cents. This simple addition brightens my meal and my mood. Heading to the daily essentials aisle to keep myself presentable. Picking up a razor for about $1.7. It's a vital investment in my own discipline. Time to pay. The total is about $6. I stayed within my budget. This food will get me through the remaining days until payday.
I pack my bags and head home to prep dinner. With a fresh haircut and a full bag of groceries, all that's left is to enjoy a quiet night. I want to bring this day to a mindful close. Time for dinner. I'm going to cook using these ingredients I bought today. Starting with the miso soup.
Cutting off the base of the ininoi. Adding the ingredients to the boiling water. I pulled the ininoi apart by hand so they soak up more of the flavor.
The ingredients are soft enough now. So, in goes the miso.
The aroma that spreads at this moment always soothes the day's fatigue.
The miso soup is done. Next, I'm making foilbaked yellowtail. Starting with the sauce, a good amount of miso, a bit of sugar, adding a touch of sweetness to the salty miso really brings the flavors together. A splash of water. This helps the miso dissolve so the flavor coats the yellow tail evenly. Once it's mixed well enough, the sauce is ready. Lining the foil with a bed of sliced onions. This prevents the fish from sticking and lets the onions soak up all the savory juices. Two birds with one stone. Placing the yellow tail on top.
Pouring the sauce over the fish. As it bakes, the savory miso aroma will soak down into the onions, making every bite incredible. Adding the green onions at the end and wrapping it in foil, closing it up gently to keep all the flavors inside. Doing the same for the remaining two pieces.
By cooking them now, I'm helping out my future self for tomorrow. It's a smart way to meal prep.
Placing them over boiling water and covering to steam bake. The steam cooks the yellow tail gently, keeping it nice and tender. Washing the dishes while I wait for the food to cook.
I don't like to procrastinate. Cleaning as I go helps keep my life in order. It should be about time. Let's check if it's done. The scent of miso leaking from the foil is incredibly appetizing.
It's finished. The savory aroma of the miso and the sweetness of the onions blend perfectly.
These few dollars worth of ingredients have transformed into a real feast. Starting with the miso soup. Just having this warm bowl at the end of the day makes all the stress melt away. And here's the main dish. The fatty yellow tail and miso are an incredible match.
The onions are tender and soaked in flavor. This meal I cooked myself gives me the energy to keep going tomorrow. The rich miso sauce pairs perfectly with the rice. I could eat this forever. It's simple, but it's the taste that brings me the most peace. It's just $1.20 per meal. But the fact that I chose it and cooked it myself gives me a sense of fulfillment beyond the numbers. Because I have so little, I've learned to cherish every single bite.
Finishing with the miso soup. The warmth fills me from the inside out. That's the end of my day.
I'm packing the leftover foil baked fish and miso soup into containers for the fridge. A little gift for tomorrow's me. Preparing ahead like this gives me a small sense of peace of mind. Finished getting ready for bed and put the dry sheets back. Tomorrow's lunch will be from today's groceries.
Tomorrow is just another day to stay disciplined and endure. Good night. It's noon the next day.
Lunch is the about 60 cents instant noodles I bought yesterday. Boiling an egg I had left in the fridge. This one ingredient transforms ramen into a feast. Peeling the egg once it's boiled.
The water is boiling, so in goes the noodles. Adding the soup base.
Adding the boiled egg and some bacon I found in the freezer, topped with green onions, and it's done. Just 60 cent noodles with whatever I had at home.
But for me right now, this is the best meal I could ask for. Starting with the soup. The rich miso and the savory bacon fat blend perfectly, warming me up from the inside. Next, the noodles.
The soup clings to them perfectly, and they go down so smoothly. There's nothing particularly special about them, but the warm meal I made myself gives me the most strength. For dinner, I had the same meal as yesterday. Even with the same menu, the fact that I can provide for myself keeps me going. There are no big changes yet, but I believe these small steps will lead to a new version of me. Tomorrow, I'll keep moving forward, one step at a time.
