Good evening and thank you for joining us. I'm Emma Brot. We come on air tonight with a crime update after a deadly shooting in Elkhart this morning.
The Elkhart Sheriff's Office confirmed one woman died after being shot just before 3:00 a.m. today. The Sheriff's Office says police responded to a welfare check in the 4000 block of County Road 18. That's where deputies found an unresponsive woman with a gunshot wound. She was later pronounced dead and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit Homicide Unit has been contacted to investigate the shooting. This is an ongoing investigation, so of course we'll keep you updated.
And the South Bend Fire Department responded to multiple fires across the city during this Memorial Day weekend.
Unfortunate Fortunately, no residents were injured in any of these fires. The first happened Friday night in an alley between Huey and O'Brien Streets where a detached garage caught fire. The second came Saturday afternoon in the 1700 block of McGregor Road where smoke was coming from a house. Firefighters were able to rescue two dogs inside the home and put the fire out within about 20 minutes. The last fire happened early this morning in the 500 block of South Bendix Drive where smoke was coming from the second floor of a home. Crews were able to bring the fire under control quickly. All three fires remain under investigation.
Now, let's take a look outside. We're looking at Michigan City right now. Uh, it's a beautiful day ahead of what's shaping up to be a great beach day tomorrow as well with some nice sunny skies on the way. Let's check in with our First Alert Meteorologist Aliyah Joe. How's tomorrow looking? Thanks, Emma. And just like you saw on that live cam, the skies have cleared and the temperatures are warming significantly since that rain has moved out of our area. Here is what we're going to be first alerting you on. We have a pleasant Memorial Day, like she had mentioned, supposed to be warm temperatures and sunny skies. Warm temperatures are going to continue to trend throughout the next 10-day forecast. Could have a sprinkle during the midweek on Wednesday and Thursday.
We're going to keep track of that and keep first alerting you. Now, like I said, those temperatures have increased a lot since we had that rain. It was only about 62° when that rain system came through and we're already nearing that 70° mark, even exceeding the 70° mark in the western portions of our viewing area. Jumping to that radar, lots of clear skies for the at the moment and those are going to continue as we go throughout our Monday on Memorial Day. So, I know today was a little bit of a bummer with the rain and everyone, you know, wanting to be outside to celebrate this weekend, we do have a clear day coming tomorrow. Now, Indy 500 finished up just in time because there is a line of showers and thunderstorms that just moved through Indianapolis. Make sure you stay tuned for that full 10-day forecast.
Thanks, Sully. I'm looking forward to those warm temperatures this week. And happening now, communities across Michiana are coming together in support of the injured officer in Friday's hospital shooting. This comes as state police have released the charges filed against the suspect in the shooting.
You're looking at 22-year-old Sharod Grafton Jr. of Chicago. Indiana State Police say he's charged with attempted battery, attempted murder, battery against a public safety official, and auto theft. Grafton was arrested a short time after the shooting. He's still booked into the Porter County Jail.
