The percent symbol (%) contains two circles that serve as instructions: each circle represents one move of the decimal point to the left. To convert a percentage to a decimal, count the circles in the percent symbol and move the decimal point that many spaces to the left, adding zeros as needed. For example, 53% becomes 0.53 (move decimal twice), 7% becomes 0.07 (move decimal twice with a leading zero), and 123% becomes 1.23 (move decimal twice).
