Two research teams analyzing the same 6 million galaxy observations have reached opposite conclusions about the universe's fate, with the disagreement centered on the dark energy equation of state parameter (w): if w equals exactly -1, the universe will slowly die in a heat death over quintillions of years, but if w is slightly less than -1, everything will be torn apart in a catastrophic Big Rip within cosmic timescales.

Two Teams, Two Endings — One UniverseHinzugefügt:
Two research teams, one analyzing data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument in Arizona, the other working with European Space Agency's Planck Legacy data, have spent the last 18 months examining the same observations of 6 million galaxies. They've reached opposite conclusions about how the universe ends. Both teams accept the same physics, both acknowledge the same measurements. The disagreement comes down to a single parameter, W, the equation of state of dark energy. If W equals exactly -1, as the Planck team maintains, the universe dies slowly over quintillions of years, every star extinguished, every atom eventually dissolved into radiation, leaving nothing but infinite cold emptiness. If W is slightly less than -1, as the DES analysis tentatively suggests, everything, galaxies, planets, even the fabric of space itself, tears apart in a catastrophic big rip. The timeline shortens from unimaginable to merely cosmic. Both cannot be true. For a limited time only, we are giving out the first three chapters of our complete introduction to stargazing, completely free. Check our channel profile for the link.
