Every single behavior I've described in this video, the repetitive eating, the echolleia, the info dumping, the pressure seeking, the time blindness, the pattern recognition, the sensory overload, the loving through information, the shutdowns. Every single one of them is a response to the same fundamental reality. Your brain processes the world without the filters that most brains have. Neurotypical brains come equipped with a sophisticated filtering system that automatically determines what's important and what's noise, what requires attention, and what can be safely ignored, what needs processing, and what can be discarded.
Your brain doesn't have that filter. Or rather, your filter operates on different criteria. It lets everything in. Every sound, every texture, every pattern, every piece of social data, every deviation from the expected, every sensory input from every direction, all at once, all the time, at full volume, with no dimmer switch. And from that single neurological difference, everything else cascades. You eat the same food because predictability reduces the incoming data. You echolleia because your brain uses familiar sounds to regulate itself amid the chaos. You info dump because when you find a topic that your brain can process naturally, the relief is so profound that you want to live inside it. You seek pressure because it gives your body definitive sensory boundaries in a world that feels boundaryless. You lose time because when your attention finally locks onto something manageable, your brain doesn't want to let go. You see patterns because your unfiltered processing catches details that filtered brains discard.
You overload on sensory input because you're receiving more of it than your system was designed to process. You show love through information because that's the language your brain speaks most fluently. you shut down because eventually inevitably the volume exceeds the capacity.
And the thing that makes this the oddest, the most unusual, the most profoundly different thing about autistic brains compared to neurotypical brains is not any individual behavior.
It's the fact that you've been doing all of this, all of it, every single day for your entire life. And most of you didn't know it was unusual. You thought everyone experienced the world this way.
You thought everyone found clothing tags unbearable and small talk exhausting and pattern recognition automatic and time perception unreliable and social interaction metabolically expensive. And when you found out they didn't, when you discovered that most people's brains have a filter that yours doesn't, the reaction wasn't just surprise. It was grief. Grief for every time you were called too sensitive. Grief for every time you were told to just relax. Grief for every time you forced yourself to sit in environments that were neurologically assaulting you and smiled through it because you thought that's what everyone was doing. But here's where the grief turns into something else. Because once you understand that your brain processes the world differently, once you stop trying to force a filtered experience onto an unfiltered system, once you give yourself permission to eat the same lunch and wear the safe clothes and take the quiet breaks and info dump about the thing you love without apologizing, once you stop fighting your own neurology and start working with it, something shifts.
The exhaustion lifts, not completely but significantly. The shame dissolves. The self-lame stops. And for the first time, maybe the first time in your entire life, you stop seeing your behaviors as odd and start seeing them as exactly what they are. A brilliant, creative, sophisticated set of solutions that your brain invented to navigate a world that wasn't designed for it. That's not odd.
That's extraordinary. And the sooner you recognize it, the sooner you can stop apologizing for the way your brain works and start building a life that actually respects it. A life where the same lunch every day isn't embarrassing, it's efficient. Where the noiseancelling headphones aren't a weakness, they're a tool. Where the info dump isn't too much, it's a gift. where the need for pressure, for routine, for sameness, for silence, for depth isn't something to overcome. It's something to accommodate.
